Introduction Thank you for choosing Siemens TPS3 Surge Pro tective Device (SPD). This is a high quality , high energy surge suppres sor designed to prot ect sensitive equipment fr om damaging transient overvoltages. Proper installation is important to maximize per formance.
2008 NEC Ar t 285 & UL 1449-3 SPD T ypes: T ypes 1, 2, 3, & 4 Based on Location within electrical distribution system (also coincides with ANSI/IEEE C62.
TPS SERIES DESCRIPTION TPS3 12 Externally mount ed SPD, single module in enclosure, standard modes of pr ot ection TPS3 L12 Externally mount ed SPD, single module in enclosure, 10 modes of pr otection.
Parallel Connection This is a Parallel connected SPD – not series connected. As outlined previousl y , an SPD ‘drains of f ’ excessiv e voltage fr om an electrical system. Because of parallel connection, installation of the SPD reasonably near the eq uipment to be pro tect ed is satisfactory.

T erminals T erminals will accept 14 - 2 A WG conductor and are provided for line (phase), neutral (if used), and equipment safety ground connections. 8 A WG is the minimum recommended wire size because UL testing and evaluation was performed using 8 A WG.
Optional Flush Mount Installation Considerations The TPS3 12 and TPS3 15 are appro ximately 6” deep. The unit will not mount flush unless there is at least 6” of depth clearance. The TPS3 12 and TPS3 15 are not designed to mount flush on a typical 2 x 4 stud wall.
PRE-PL AN INST ALL A TION TO ACC OMPLISH THE FOLLO WING: • Meet all National and Local codes (NEC® Ar ticle 285 addresses SPDs) • Mount SPD as close to panel or equipment as possible to keep leads short • Ensure leads are as shor t and straight as possible, including neutral and ground.

Phase A, B & C: Green LED indicators—one per phase. Green is good. Extinguished green LED indicates loss of prot ection. Every suppres sion element in this SPD is monitor ed. N-G suppres sion element monitoring is logic-connected t o Phase A. Ser vice LED (red): LED illuminates in the event of problems.
Dr y Contact Option T wo sets of Form C dr y contacts are included with the Dr y Cont act option. Dry Contacts change state during inoper ative conditions, including loss of power . Any status change can be monitored elsewhere via Dr y Contacts. A T erminal Block includes two sets of Normally Open (N.
Display Replacement The display is field replaceable. Deenergize SPD, confirm with appropriat e measurement equipment and dischar ge internal capacitance to ground. Mark locations and carefully disconnect diagnostic cables, contacts, connecting conduct ors, etc.
