Once basic setup is performed, most u sers will find that the 9700 Power Meter ’s fact ory c o nfigura tion pr ovide s all of the monito r ing, lo g ging a nd control functionality they require. Depending on your application, you may need to make minor chan ges to the factory configuration to make th e device “fit” your power system.
Configur ation T ools Diffe rent t ype s of c onfigur ation c hanges c an be made using the diff e rent tools provided by Siemens Energy & Automation.
The M o d ul e The modul e is the basic buildin g block of the device’s architectu re. A module can be cons idered as a functi on bo x : it receives data from its inputs, makes decisions based on the settin gs in its setup registers, and then makes data available at its output registers.
Making Configur ation Chang e s Regardless of the interface you u se, when you make configu ration changes to a device you are either chan ging a value in a module’s setup register or you are changin g the linkage between two or more modules.
The DISPLA Y OPTIONS , NAMEPLATE INFO and DA TE/TIME DISPLAY menu ite ms are described in “Displayi ng Data with the M GT” in Chapter 2. Use QUICK S ETUP to change PT/CT values, com municati ons setup a n d demand int er v als. PARAMETER RESET allows yo u to reset Status counters and Min/Max, E nerg y and Demand values .
Using the MGT’ s Buttons Move t hroug h the MGT’s m enu ite ms by pre ssing t he butt ons ad jacent to menu items on th e screen. To enter data, use th e numeric keypad and th e arrow keys to make a selection or enter a value ( detailed below).
Some procedures require that you enter a number or a word. When the MGT want s input from you, it displays a representation of th e keypad on the screen: The left side of the bu tton assignment screen represen ts the actual buttons on the MG T keypad.
PT/CT The PT/CT menu acc esses the Powe r Meter and Sag/ Swell mod ule setup registers that are used for basic setup: Setup Register Functi on Volts Mode The power syste m’s configurati on – WYE, .
Etherne t COM The Ethernet CO M menu accesses the Eth ernet module’s setup registers. The Eth ernet module controls the 10Base- T and 10Base-FL ports on the optional X PRESS C ARD . Setup Register Function Protocol Sets the communi cations p rotocol for the Ethe rnet p orts.
Min/Max Reset The minimu m AND the maximum values for each th e following parameters are reset when Min/Max Rse t is used: ♦ Phase and average Current (I a, I b, I c, and I avg) ♦ Frequency ♦ Li.
Configure ION The Configu re ION menu provides access to the setu p registers of every ION module in the 9700 P ower Meter. To edit a module’s setup registers with the MGT , press SETUP then CONFIGU RE ION . The Feature Man ager appears, listing all of the module types available.

The 9700 Power M eter provides many advanced features, including comprehensive I/O, advanced interoperability sup port, and precision time synchronization . In addition, the 9700 Power M eter’s functionality can be customized to perform virtually an y power monitoring and control functio ns.
WinPM-A d v anced 90 0 0 Series Meter Progr amming The factory configu ration for 9000 series meters provides all of the monitor ing, log ging a nd contr ol functi onality y ou norma lly req uire. However, the 9000 series meters can be customiz ed to perform virtually any powe r monit oring and co ntro l f unctio n.
There are approximately 50 types of modules in the 9000 series meter architecture; the 9000 series meter h as 46 different types. Most 9000 series meters can support several instan ces of a certain module type (for example, the 9000 series meter supports 16 Th ermal Demand modules, 20 Periodic Timer modules an d one Clock module).
An inpu t of one module can be li nked to the output registers of an other module only if they are of th e same register class. For more on module linking, see the section on Register Classes later in this chapter.
Creating New Modules This pro cedur e de scri b es ho w to use WinPM to c reat e new m odule s in your 9000 series meter. Do the following to create a new module: 1. From the View Menu , select Device List. Result: The Device List win dow is displayed.
5. Select a group to which you want to add new module by h ighlightin g an item in the Manager Modules list. Then click the Create Ne w Module button. Result: The confir mation w i ndow fo r cre ating a ne w mod ule is displayed. 6. Click the Yes button.
2. On the Device List win dow, highlight the 9000 series power meter th at you want to co nfigur e. 3. Click the right mous e button, and then select Device Configuration from the dr op-do wn menu tha t is disp layed . Result: The 9000 Series M eter Configuration window of the selected meter is displayed.
6. Double click a module group folder such as, Power Meter modules. Result: The secon d level window for 9000 Series meter programming is displayed. The window lists all the modules available in the selected group. 7. Click t he Config ure b utton. Result: The setu p register window for the selected module is displayed.
8. Click the Set button for th e setup register. Result: The Modify setu p register window for the selected register is displayed. 9. Click the Ok button to change a setup register setting. En ter the value or select an item in the drop down list. Result: A message box displays once the setu p register setting is changed in the selected meter.
2. To go back to the second level window for 9000 series meter programming, click the Up A Level button . Result: The second level win dow is displayed.
7. Double click an output register that will be the inp ut of another module. Result: On th e lower left-hand corner of the win dow, WinPM displays the output register of th e selected module. 8. Select the module to be connected to in the Select Module drop d own list.
9. Double click the inpu t register to connect to. Result: WinPM displays a warning message. 10. Click the Yes button. Result: WinPM displays a con firmation message box. 11. Click the Yes button. Result: WinPM creates the linkage between the two modu les.
3. Click the right mous e button, and then select Device Configuration from the dr op-do wn menu tha t is disp layed . Result: The 9000 Series M eter Configuration window of the selected meter is displayed. 4. Click the Advanced button . Result: The first level win dow for 9000 Series meter programming is displayed.
Ov erview of Module Gro ups This section lists differen t groups (types) of modules available in th e 9000 series meters and provides a brief description of each group. For a more detailed description of an y modules, refer to the Advanced Meter Config uration R efe rence Guide .

Module G roup Descripti on Periodi c Timer Provide s a running time r that pulses at pr ogrammable intervals. When used i n conjunction wi th other modul es, the Peri odic Ti mer can trigger ev ents on a regu lar bas is; for example, w hen used w ith a Recorder module, the Periodic Timer can trigger entrie s for a snapshot log .
Once you h ave connected the status inputs to the field equipmen t that they monitor, check th e 9700 Power Meter’s Digital Input modules to en sure they are configured appropriately.
Expansion B oa rd s Do not us e dig ital out p ut mod ules on I /O Expansio n B oard B fo r cont r ol applications. False triggers may result wh en supply power to the board is l ost.
Analog Device Rest rictions — Power Supplies Power requirements an d hardware restrictions limit the nu mber and placement of analog devices on I/O expansion boards. The allowable nu mber of analog devices the 9700 Power Meter can su pport increases significantly wh en two external power supplies are us ed to power the exp ansion bo ards.
Specifyin g a P ort in an Modul e The Analog O utput, Digital Output an d Pulser modules in the 9700 P ower Meter allow you to specify which port a signal is sent to. Similarly, the Analog Inpu t and Digital Input modu les allow you to specify which port to monitor for incoming sign als.
Using the Modbus R TU Pr ot ocol The 9700 Power M eter can make any real-time data available through the Modicon M odbus RTU protocol. Modbus M aster devices connected to the 9700 Power Meter can access this data. M odbus Master devices can also write data into registers, making device configuration chang es or initializing control actions.

Using the DNP 3.0 Pr otocol The Distributed Network P rotocol Version 3.0 (DNP 3.0) is an open protocol used in the electric utility industry for communications and interoperability among substation compu ters, RTUs, IEDs, and Master Station s.
If your DNP network requires data in a format different than that provided by the factory DNP configu ration, you can edit the setu p registers in the DNP Slave Export modules an d the DNP Options modu le. Do not make any changes to the DNP Options module’s setup registers un less you understand the effects each change will cause.
DNP Options Mod ule Settings The DNP Option s module provides global settings that affect all DNP Slave Export and DNP Sl ave Import modules. The default setti ngs in this modu le are shown in th e following table.
Importing Data using DNP 3.0 Data can be imported into the 9700 P ower Meter from a DNP control relay or analog output device. DNP Slave Import modules are used to take a DNP Analog output or Bin ary output object and map them in to registers.
The cable that con nects the modem to the telephon e network must be disconnected before openin g the meter for servicing. Baud Rates The in ternal modem is capable of usin g all standard modem protocols from 300 bps to 33600 bps.
Connecting the Modem Connect the 9700 P ower Meter-MDM modem via th e RJ-11 jack located on the top of the meter. An FCC complian t telephone cord is provided that ha s two male RJ-11 plugs. Conn ect the meter to your telephone network u sing the cable provided (if you u se a different cable, ensure th at it is FCC Part 68 compliant).
LED Function CD This L ED in dicate s the pr esence of a carri er sig nal. It shoul d stay on as l ong as there is an acti ve connection to the mod em. TXD This LED flashes to ind icate the p resence signals transmi tted out on the tel ephone line. The two LEDs in dicating traffic on COMM 1 are marked RXD an d TXD.
Using Time S ync hr onization Time sync hronizatio n allows y ou to sy nchronize the inte rnal clo cks of multiple networked Siemens E nergy & Automation devices. Wh en your devices’ clocks are synchronized, all data logs will have timestamps that are relative to a uniform time base.
Communications P orts and Protocols Used Time sync hronizatio n signals from W inPM or a GPS rece iver are r e ceiv ed through th e communications ports on th e 9700 Power Meter base unit an d optional X PRESS C ARD .
Time S ync hronization using a GPS Receiver Use GPS receivers at each Site if you require time synchronization of your 9700 Power Meter devices to be within ± 1ms of Universal Time.
Time S ync hronization Diagnostics and Event Logging The 9700 Power Meter’s Diagn ostics module includes five output registers that provide time synchron ization diagnostics.

Standard Charact er Scr eens Standard character screens are u sed for displaying numeric register values. They present data in small enough characters to in clude 15 different numeric registers on on e screen.
Larg e Charact er Screens Large character screens are also used for displayin g numeric register values. They display u p to four registers on one screen.
To set up a 4-channel bar gr aph screen: 1. Enter the parameter h andle of the first register you want to display on the screen, then press ENTER . If you want to keep the register that is currently in use, press the button labeled KEEP PREVIOUS . 1. Enter the min imum boundary for the bar graph scale, then press ENTER .
6. Steps 5 and 6 are repeated for the remainin g three registers to be displayed in th e bar graph. 7. You are prompted to specify if you want to display min and max bars on the bar graph. If you speci fied parameter handles in steps 5 or 6 an d you want to display these valu es, select 1, then press ENTER .
To set up a 6-channel bar gr aph screen: 1. Enter the parameter h andle of the first register you want to display on the screen, then press ENTER . If you want to keep the register that is currently in use, press the button labeled KEEP PREVIOUS . Repeat this step for the remaining 5 registers.
Harmonics Screen s The harmon ics screens allow you to display the values calcu lated by the Harmonics Analyzer module. Th ey appear in a histogram form to show the harmonic spectrum of the input for which harmonics are being calculated.
P aram eter T rending Screens The parameter trendin g screens plot the value of a register over time. These real-time displays allow you to view a register value graphically. You can specify the scale for the Y- axis of the graph (the register valu e) and the X-axis (time).
Stat us Displa y Screen s Status display screens are us ed for displaying Boolean register values. The data is presented usi ng small enough characters to include 3, 7, or 14 different Boolean registers on on e screen.
7 and 14 Status Display Screens The screens displayin g 7 and 14 values are best suited for viewing close-u p. To set up a 7 or 14 status di splay screen: 1. Enter the parameter h andle of the first register whose status you want to display on the screen, th en press ENTER .
W ave fo r m Di sp la y S c re en s Waveform display screens allow you to display the ou tput of a Waveform Recorder module. They read the data from th is module’s Wform Log output register and display it graphically based on the scale you define.
Integrat or Screens Integrator screens allow you to display n umeric outputs with greater resolution than other displays. They can display up to 4 ou tput values on the MGT at on e time, with up to 11 digits of resolution. By defau lt, the MGT includes the ENERGY display an d the outputs of Integrator modu les #1 throug h #4.
