9 8 Preparation Inserting a MiniDisc 1 Slide the OPEN lever to release the com- partment door . 2 Lift it up. 3 Insert a MiniDisc by pressing the middle of the edge of the disc. 4 Close the compartment door . 2 1 3 4 Notes: ● Do not place the MiniDisc under the holder .

11 DIGIT AL OUT Preparation Connections : continued T o connect to a stereo system with a “DIGIT AL OUT” or “OPTICAL OUT” socket 10 T o a stereo system with a "DIGIT AL OUT" socket. (See left, Digital connection.) Compared to analogue connection recording, it allows high-quality recording.

15 Basic operation Notes: ● If power failure occurs whilst playing a disc using the AC adaptor , disconnect it from the wall socket. Otherwise, play- back may start automatically when electricity resumes. ● If you connect the AC adaptor without installing the re- chargeable battery , playback may start automatically .

17 1 Press the MODE button whilst the record- ing is paused. 2 Start recording. Useful Features Double time recording in monaural mode 1 Notes: ● When the unit is stopped after a recording has been made in this mode, the recording mode will return to the stereo mode automatically .
18 Useful Features 2 1,4 3 T o start recording from the middle of a track Y ou can erase a portion of a track and make a new recording. ● All of the tracks that follow the newly recorded track will be erased. 1 During playback, press the 06 06 06 06 06 button at the point where you want to begin record- ing.
19 Useful Features T o create your own track numbers Y ou can create your own track numbers at any point. Whilst recording, additional track numbers can be created at any point by pressing the REC button. ● One track number will be added every time the REC button is pressed.
20 Useful Features About track numbers 1. T rack numbers are created automatically during re- cording via the analogue connection when a silence of 1 second or more is detected (Auto marker func- tion). A series of tracks can be recorded as one by disabling the auto marker function see page 18.
21 Useful Features 3 4 1 5 T o record from a microphone 1 Connect a stereo microphone to the MIC IN socket. 2 Insert a recordable MiniDisc (page 8). 3 Press the REC button. 4 Press the REC LEVEL ( 5 5 5 5 5 or 4 4 4 4 4 ) but- ton to adjust the recording level.
22 Useful Features Notes: ● Whilst making a mic recording, do not connect anything to the OPTICAL/LINE IN socket on the main unit. ● T o use a microphone, be sure it is a plug-in-power type microphone. • When a plug-in-power type microphone is plugged in, the main unit will provide power for the microphone’s operation.
23 Useful Features T rack intervals When recording from the microphone, track num- bers will be created automatically at regular inter- vals (default setting: approximately every 5 min- utes). During a mic synchro recording, the unit pauses when a silence lasts for 3 seconds or more, and creates a track number .
24 Useful Features Advanced playback 23 T o locate the next track: Press the 4 4 4 4 4 button whilst the unit is stopped. T o locate the previous track: Press the 5 5 5 5 5 button whilst the unit is stopped. ● T o skip a number of tracks at one time, press the 5 5 5 5 5 or 4 4 4 4 4 button repeatedly until the desired track num- ber is shown.
25 Useful Features Random play or repeat play During playback, press the MODE button repeat- edly to select the playback mode. Notes: ● If the playback mode is selected whilst stopped, press the 06 button to start playback. ● When “TOC” is displayed, random play or repeat play is impossible.
26 Useful Features Checking Displays T o check the remaining recording time and the total playing time Whilst in the stop mode, press the DISP button. Each time the button is pressed, the display will.
27 T o display the playing time of an indi- vidual track 1 Whilst in the stop mode, press the 5 5 5 5 5 or 4 4 4 4 4 button to display the track number and track name. 2 Press the DISP button to display the play- ing time for that track. ● Each time the 5 or 4 button is pressed, the playing time of the previous or next track will be displayed.

29 28 Using with the rechargeable or alkaline battery 1 Disconnect the AC adaptor . 2 Insert the rechargeable battery or alkaline battery from the (+) marked side.
30 29 Hold Function Useful Features Move the HOLD switch to the safety position (direction indicated by the arrow). (An orange mark appears.) ● T o cancel the hold mode, move the HOLD switch away from the safety position (the opposite direction of the arrow).
31 Listening to a MiniDisc through a stereo system or a car stereo Notes: ● When recording with stereo system, eliminate the con- firmation sound (page 38). Otherwise, it will also be recorded. ● The recording will be made in the analogue mode. ● Character information will not be recorded.
32 3 Press the DISP button repeatedly to select the type of characters. ● The first 3 characters in the group of the selected characters will be displayed for about 1 second. 4 Press the 5 5 5 5 5 or 4 4 4 4 4 button repeatedly to select the letter .
33 Advanced Features T o add characters 1 Put the unit in the character input mode. (Perform steps 1 - 2 on page 31.) 2 Press the VOL + or VOL – button to move the cursor to the right of the character , where you want to add a new character . 3 Select the character to add.

35 Advanced Features 34 T itling a MiniDisc : continued Notes: ● If the total number of tracks on the master MiniDisc does not match that on the MiniDisc for stamping, the unit will display "Can't ST AMP" and turn off the power .

37 Advanced features 36 Editing a recorded MiniDisc : continued T o divide a track 1 Start playing the track to be divided into two. Press the 06 06 06 06 06 button at the point where you want to divide the track. 2 Press the EDIT button to select “DIVIDE”.

39 Advanced features 38 Changing default settings 1 With a MiniDisc inserted, press the MODE button for 2 seconds or more. “SET UP” will appear . ● When you release the button, “BEEP ON” or “BEEP OFF” will appear . 2 Press the 5 or 4 button to display the menu.
40 39 References Resuming auto play ■ When you stop playback and replay the MiniDisc without removing it, playback starts from the point you stopped it.
