x Simplex Multiple xer Resetting the Simple x The simplex can be reset to the factory default state. Upon r e- set, all programmable featur es return to the factory settings. The reset featur e is normally used for diagnostic purposes but may be used to “start from scratch” during system setup.
Chapter 1 — About Simplex 1 Chapter 1 — About Simple x The Simplex provides the capability to r ecord multiple video cameras using a videotape recor der (VCR).
2 Simplex Multiple xer • ALARM INPUT POLARITY settings: either active high or active low . • Alarm counter with on-scr een summary by camera. • Independent call monitor output for viewing live alarm events during tape playback. • On-screen display includes date, time, alarm status, video loss and 10-character camera titles.

4 Simplex Multiple xer TECHNICAL OVER VIEW The Simplex system features video camera inputs with a pas- sive looping output for each. Synchronizing or phasing cam- eras is not requir ed. The Simplex comes with a main monitor output for displaying live camera images or recor ded images on a standard monitor .
Chapter 1 — About Simplex 5 Encoder Output The Simplex video encoder produces a single video signal con- taining field by field samples from all camera inputs.

Chapter 2 — F ront and Rear Panels 7 4. 2x2 (down arr ow) — Pr ess this button to display images from four cameras (quad display). Used in the setup menu to move backward thr ough available characters or to choose a menu toggle option. Press d own arr ow to move the tar get cursor down one row in motion detection setup.
8 Simplex Multiple xer Figure 5 — Rear P anel Connectors 1. gnd — Use this gr ound screw when connecting contact or TTL/CMOS compatible alarm devices. See Alarms for details. 2. power — This 2.1 mm pin jack accepts the Simplex series power module plug or other 12 VDC, center positive source of at least 1 ampere .
Chapter 3 — Installation 9 Chapter 3 — Installation Select a location for the product that is clean and dry and has AC power . Find an environment where temperatur e and hu- midity extremes do not exceed the pr oduct specification (see Appendix D — T echnical Specifications ).
10 Simplex Multiple xer Alar m The alarms connector includes pins for mechanical or TTL/CMOS standard alarm inputs, the alarm hold input and the alarm output. These connections allow the Simplex to be completely integrated with security systems. See Chapter 6 — Alarms and Appendix A — Alarm Connector Pin Assignments for details.
Chapter 3 — Installation 11 SYSTEM CHECK OUT Y ou can check Simplex system operation immediately after installation. While the Simplex itself requir es no adjustment, check system components such as monitors, cameras and the video recor der for pr oper operation and adjustment.
12 Simplex Multiple xer Camera Chec k The multicamera display in live mode makes checking camera performance as simple as comparing two pictures on one screen. This method is pr eferable to the direct camera to moni- tor technique because it allows precise adjustment of each cam- era against a chosen refer ence camera.
Chapter 3 — Installation 13 Making a T est T ape The easiest way to verify system operation is to make a test recor ding and play it back. This process effectively tests every piece of equipment in the system. Before pr oceeding with recording, we r ecommend that you complete both the monitor calibration and camera check pro- cedures.
14 Simplex Multiple xer Chapter 4 — Setup THE SETUP MENU SYSTEM Simplex features can be configur ed to suit the requir ements of most video installations.
Chapter 4 — Setup 15 SETUP MENUS The following paragraphs take you through the menu system step-by-step, describing each menu’s purpose and options. System Time/Date This menu displays the time and date stored in the internal clock/calendar , firmware version number and r evision date.
16 Simplex Multiple xer T oggle Options The toggle options menu allows you to review and set each option. T oggle options have only two values. T o change a value, position the highlight over it and press the up or do wn arro w . The other value appears.
Chapter 4 — Setup 17 Alar m Input P olarity The ALARM INPUT POLARITY option allows you to set the polarity of all alarm inputs. It toggles as follows: A CT LO W — Active alarm inputs ar e “low .” The Simplex recognizes a contact closur e or TTL/CMOS logic low as an alarm event.
18 Simplex Multiple xer Quad Record Option (f our-camera models only) This option allows you to recor d quad images rather than the default full screen image r ecording. The quad image must be displayed to recor d in quad mode. ON — W ith quad displayed, recor ds the quad image.
Chapter 4 — Setup 19 VCR Alarm Record Time This menu allows you to set the recording speed of the VCR when an alarm is triggered ( 1–999 hours). The VCR changes to this speed when alarm input is received. NO TE: If you connect pin 37 on the Simplex alarms connec- tor to the VCR, you don’t need to set VCR RECORD TIME or VCR ALARM RECORD TIME.
20 Simplex Multiple xer Global Dwell The GLOBAL DWELL menu allows you to set the camera switching rate. The GLOBAL D WELL setting determines the rate at which the cameras are sequenced full scr een when Se- quence ( up arr o w ) is selected. It also determines the rate the monitor switches cameras during multiple alarms.
Chapter 4 — Setup 21 The motion setup screen allows you to define motion detec- tion targets in the camera’s field of view . This screen is ac- cessed from the Camera T itles menu by pr essing the Function button. The motion setup screen displays the curr ent camera image overlaid with a special graphic.
22 Simplex Multiple xer Live — turns ON the row of tar gets with the cursor line. T ape — turns OFF the r ow of targets with the cursor line. Camera — toggles the corresponding tar get on the cursor line. Function — saves the current motion tar get settings and re- turns to Camera T itles.
Chapter 5 — Operation 23 The Simplex has three basic operating modes: recor d, live with- out recor d and tape playback. Recor d mode is the only mode which sends camera images to the VCR and includes motion (activity) detection. Live mode displays cameras without re- cording the images.
24 Simplex Multiple xer Record mode is the only mode af fected by the motion detec- tion feature. Images ar e sent to tape mor e often fr om cameras where activity is detected when motion tar gets are ON . In one camera recor ding mode, an encoded full-screen image from the selected camera is output to the VCR at the pr o- grammed time-lapse rate.
Chapter 5 — Operation 25 Liv e Mode Without Record Live mode is used for viewing a multicamera image on the main monitor . No recording takes place while in live mode. The Live LED is lit. The on-screen r ecord status message (if set ON in the Setup menu) flashes REC OFF .
26 Simplex Multiple xer T ape Playbac k Mode Main monitor display: Pressing T ape puts the unit in play- back mode to review a pr eviously recorded tape.
Chapter 5 — Operation 27 Autodetect VCR Speed Signal If pin 37 on the alarms connector is connected to the VCR for the timing signal (it may be named VCR trigger input, sync pulse input or clock), the multiplexer sends images at the rate the VCR sends pulses.
28 Simplex Multiple xer The Simplex can be set to recor d just one camera. This feature can be turned on or off at any time. If one camera r ecording is turned on, the Function LED flashes, the Record LED is on and the status message 1 CAM=XX shows on the main monitor ( XX repr esents the camera number).
Chapter 5 — Operation 29 VCR Special Eff ects Most special video playback features can be used while r eview- ing a recor ding. Field oriented features such as field advance or still field should work, if the VCR repr oduces each video field accurately .
30 Simplex Multiple xer Chapter 6 — Alar ms The Simplex system detects and responds to thr ee types of alarm events: mechanical alarms, recor ded alarms and video loss. A mechanical alarm event occurs when there is a contact closure at any alarm input.
Chapter 6 — Alarms 31 Alar m Counter The Simplex counts the number of mechanical alarm events that occur at each camera input. It maintains a total count for each camera until the alarm counter is cleared. The maximum alarm count per camera is 999 .
32 Simplex Multiple xer Record Mode Alar m Response When a mechanical alarm occurs in recor d mode, the Simplex alerts the operator and performs tasks requir ed to record the alarm event on videotape. When the initial alarm is detected in recor d mode: 1.
Chapter 6 — Alarms 33 T ape Playbac k Mode Alar m Response When the Simplex system is in tape playback mode, only the call monitor responds to live alarm events by displaying the associated camera. The Simplex sends nothing to the VCR, does not display graphic messages, and does not flash the LEDs.
34 Simplex Multiple xer Chapter 7 — Special Applications The features and flexibility of the Simplex make it a powerful tool in special applications where unique capabilities ar e requir ed.
Chapter 7 — Special Applications 35 REMO TE CONTROL The Simplex provides two methods of r emote control, a Re- mote Control Panel option, or using an ASCII terminal or com- puter to send RS-232 data. Both methods use the rear panel remote in and remote out connectors.
36 Simplex Multiple xer APPENDIX A ALARM CONNECT OR PIN ASSIGNMENTS The alarms connector is a DB37-S. It accepts a DB37-P mating connector . Connect gr ound wir es to the gnd screw (next to the alarms connector).
Appendices 37 APPENDIX B ALARM RECORDING CONTROL Most installations requir e that alarm events be documented on videotape. The Simplex provides all of the necessary con- nectors and signals to accomplish this. The Simplex is com- patible with virtually all VCRs and flexible enough to satisfy most video documentation requir ements.
38 Simplex Multiple xer Controlled Alar m Recording When alarm recor ding is controlled by the Simplex, the VCR recor ds cameras with alarm signals as alarm video. The re- corder r esponds to the alarm signal provided by the Simplex system. It enters the alarm recor ding mode and changes to the alarm recor d speed.
