13 Using the USB terminal Slide out the USB terminal from the unit when connecting to your PC or a USB AC adapter . T o slide out the USB terminal 1 Slide the USB terminal slide switch in the direction of the arro w to open the USB terminal cover . While slightly pressing down the le ver , slide the switch until it clic ks.
14 About files/folder s Folders f or recording In terms of folders used f or recording, the unit provides the MIC f olders (A to D) for storing recordings made via the built-in microphone , as well as the LINE f older for storing line-in recordings made via external de vices.
15 • The unit does not displa y file number and f older type. Howev er , y ou can connect the unit to your PC and chec k this information from your PC . • If y ou use your PC to change the name of a file recorded on this unit, the file can no longer be play ed from its original folder (MIC_A to MIC_D or LINE f older).
16 • If you transf er a f older of files from your PC to the MUSIC f older , the basic screen shows only FILE 0/0, giving y ou the impression that there is no file. Also, because MYLIST1 to MYLIST5 appear first on the list screen, press the V OL (+/–) button to make sure the f older is copied.
17 Selecting a folder 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Press the FOLDER/INDEX button. 3 Use the V OL (+/–) or / button to select a desired folder . A to D: Folders containing files recorded from the built-in microphone L: Folder containing files created from line-in recording.
18 Using the list screen The list screen displays f olders and files in a tree f ormat. Y ou can use this screen to quic kly select a folder or file . Displaying a list F rom the basic screen, pressing the LIST button displa ys the list screen. By def ault, the list screen displays the file selected from the basic screen.
19 Using the list screen T o select a file or f older , y ou can just use the VOL (+/–) and the / buttons. Functions of buttons during list displa y + Move the highlight up. – Move the highlight down. Move bac k up one level. Open the selected folder .
20 Switching between the internal memory and a microSD car d If a microSD card is inser ted in the unit and you w ant to use the microSD card for recording, playbac k, or erasing files , you can s witch from the internal memor y to the microSD card. 21 Inserting the batter y Inser t the AAA alkaline batter y(supplied) or AAA eneloop battery(optional) in the unit, as follo ws: 1 Open the battery compar tment lid.
22 T urning on/off the power T urning on the power Slide the PO WER/HOLD switc h in the direction of the arro w . • When the po wer turns on, “HELLO” appears on the screen. Then, the resume function operates to display the last file selected bef ore the po wer was turned off last time.
23 Remaining battery power Y ou can check the remaining battery power from the screen. When appears, replace as soon as possib le with a new battery . • When the battery is low , “LOW BA TTER Y PLEASE CHANGE THE BA TTER Y” appears and then the screen goes off.
24 Preventing accidentall y pressing a b utton (hold function) When you put the unit in a bag or poc ket, an y mov ement may accidentally result in a button or s witch being pressed and battery being consumed. T o prev ent this prob lem, we recommend that you turn on the hold function before putting the unit in a bag or poc ket.
25 Inserting/removing a microSD car d In addition to the internal memor y , you can also use a microSD card, as f ollows: 1 T urn off the power . T urning off the power (page 22) 2 Open the microSD car d slot cover .
26 z T o remove the micr oSD card Slightly press the micr oSD card. The microSD card comes out slightly . Gently remov e the card. 4 Close the microSD car d slot cover . microSD car ds that can be used on the unit The unit can use 512MB to 2GB microSD cards, as well as 4GB and 8GB microSDHC cards (as of October , 2009).
27 Handling a microSD car d • F ormat a microSD card before using it on the unit. Be sure to alwa ys use the unit to format the car d. Y ou ma y not be able to use microSD car ds formatted using y our PC or other devices. Formatting the internal memory or a microSD card (pa ge 79) • Be sure to insert a microSD card correctly in the unit.
28 Setting the calendar (date & time) Once you set the calendar correctly , the correct recording date & time inf ormation is stored in each file (timestamp function). Also , because each file name makes use of the recording date & time information, we recommend that y ou set the calendar correctly .

31 Information y ou want to kno w bef ore recording About wind noise The unit comes with a high performance built-in microphone . Therefore , if wind or your o wn breath hits the microphone directly , the wind or breathing noise is also recorded.
32 About the external recor ding mode (external input/micr ophone) For e xternal input, you can use the LINE/MIC s witch on the unit to set to LINE or MIC . T o use an external microphone Slide the LINE/MIC switch to MIC . The external recording mode is set to MIC and the screen displays “MIC”.
33 Using the scene select function The unit provides a number of recording scenes to handle v arious recording environments. Each recording scene is a combination of recording settings. Y ou can select a scene to suit your particular recording environment.
34 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Press the SCENE/A-B button. • When shipped, the unit’ s recording scene is set to “OFF”. 3 Press the / button to select a desired recording scene. • After y ou select a recording scene, y ou can press the MENU/PLA Y LIST button to chec k the recording settings for this scene .
35 Recording This section describes how to use the built-in microphone f or recording. If the “SCENE SELECT” setting is set to “MUSIC” or the “MIC ALC” setting is “OFF”, you can manually adjust the recording le vel according to the content of recording or the sound le v el.
36 4 Adjust the recording le vel (only if the “SCENE SELECT” setting is set to “MUSIC” or the “MIC ALC” setting is “OFF”). Use the follo wing procedure to adjust the recording lev el. c Press the REC button. The recording standby screen appears .
37 • In the range where the recording LED does not light up , tr y as much as possib le to increase the recording lev el (le vel meter extending to the right) b y pressing the button. • If the recording LED lights, press the button to slightly lo wer the recording le vel until the recording LED goes off.
38 5 Press the REC button. The recording LED lights and recording star ts. • During recording, do not touch or mov e the unit; otherwise any contact sound will be recorded. • During recording, you can press the REC b utton to pause, and then press it again to resume recording.
39 Switching between the b uilt-in microphone and e xternal microphone If you connect an e xternal stereo microphone to the external input (line)/microphone socket for recording, depending on the “MIC MODE” setting in the menu, the recording format (stereo/mono) will change.
40 Setting recording EQ With the recording EQ function, you can record using y our desired sound quality , such as by emphasizing the bass range or middle range . • Recording EQ can be set f or microphone recording (using f olders A to D). • Recording EQ can only be set in the recording standb y state.
41 Selecting a preset recording EQ mode 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Change the “MIC ALC” setting to “OFF” or the “SCENE SELECT” setting to “MUSIC”. Changing the “MIC ALC” setting (page 89) 3 Select a folder f or recording.
42 7 Press the / button to select a recording EQ mode, and then press the /OK button. The selected recording EQ is set and the recording menu screen returns. Y ou can select one of the sev en preset recording EQ modes, or the user-defined USER mode to create your o wn fa vorite recording EQ mode.
43 2 Press the V OL (–) button. 3 Press the / button to select a frequency band y ou want to change. • The f ollowing frequency bands are a v ailable: 150Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 4kHz, and 12kHz. 4 Press the V OL (+/–) button to c hange the level of the selected frequency band.
44 5 Press the /OK button. 6 Press the MENU/PLA Y LIST b utton. • During the operation, if y ou press the ST OP/BACK b utton twice, the recording standb y screen returns. • The USER mode y ou just set up is not lost when you turn off the power , or when you tur n off the power and replace the battery power .
45 2 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 3 Slide the LINE/MIC switch to LINE. Changing the recording mode (page 87) 4 Start playing the external sound sour ce, and press the REC button on the unit to start recording. • The recording will be stored in the LINE (L) folder .
46 46 Playing a file Use the follo wing procedure to pla y a file recorded on the unit. 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Press the LIST button. 3 Press the FOLDER/INDEX button to select the folder containing the file y ou want to play .

48 Screen display during pla ybac k During playbac k, the screen on the LCD display changes , depending on the folder to pla y . It is not possible to displa y all screens at once.
49 T o fast forwar d During playbac k, pressing the button for more than 1 second starts fast f orward. Once fast f orw ard star ts, it will continue e v en if you remov e y our finger from the button. If you w ant to return to the nor mal playbac k speed, press the /OK button.
50 T o skip forwar d or bac kward b y specified time interval If the “TIME SKIP” setting has been set to a time interval, during playbac k, pressing the / button skips forw ard or backw ard by the specified time interval only .
51 Changing the playbac k speed When learning a language or musical instrument, you may w ant to slow down the pla ybac k speed. On the other hand, you ma y want to speed up the slo w sections of a meeting. The unit allows y ou to adjust the playbac k speed as needed.
52 P erf orming A-B repeat playbac k (segment repeat pla ybac k) During playbac k, you can specify a segment of the file (point A to point B) and then pla y that segment continuously . 1 Play the file y ou want to perf orm A-B repeat playbac k. Playing a file (page 47) 2 Press the SCENE/A-B button at the position you want to start the segment.
53 P erf orming phrase playbac k During playbac k, this function enables y ou to rewind b y only the specified number of seconds. This is useful when you are listening to shor t phrases of music or just missed an impor tant audio por tion. During playbac k, press the /OK button.
54 P erf orming time searc h for pla ybac k Y ou can specify a position in a file for pla yback, using time . 1 T urn on the power (or during pla yback), and then press the MENU/PLA Y LIST button. 2 Use the V OL (+/–) button to select “PLA Y MENU”, and then press the /OK button.
55 Playing the MUSIC f older files The MUSIC (M) folder stores MP3 and WMA files transf erred from your PC , as well as W A V file recorded on the unit.
56 56 Setting or erasing an index mark When you set an inde x mark at a desired position in a file, you can quic kly skip to that position during playbac k.
57 57 Erasing index marks 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Select the folder containing the desired file for erasing inde x marks. Selecting a folder (page 17) 3 Press the / button to select a desired file. 4 Press the ERASE button.
58 6 Press the / button to select “YES”. • If y ou want to cancel the operation, select “NO”. 7 Press the /OK button. • Er asing index marks from a file does not erase the audio par t of the file. • This function er ases all index marks in a file.
59 Dividing a file Y ou can use this function to divide a file into two , thus allowing you to get rid of unneeded par ts or extr act only those that are needed. • Files stored in the MUSIC (M) f older and RECYCLE ( ) folder cannot be divided. • T o use this function, there must be empty space in the inter nal memory (or microSD card).
60 5 Press the V OL (+/–) button to select “DIVIDE”, and then press the /OK button. 6 Press the / button to select “YES”. • If y ou do not want to divide the file , select “NO” instead. 7 Press the /OK button. • While the file is being divided, the recording LED flashes.
61 How the file division function w orks and how file names are determined Example: Dividing the 001A_090820_1200.MP3 file 001A_090820_1200.MP3 002A_090821_1030.
62 Using the playlists (in MUSIC f older onl y) The unit provides fiv e playlist files in the MUSIC (M) f older b y default. Y ou can edit the playlist files (MYLIST1.M3U to MYLIST5.M3U). This allows you to pla y y our fa vorite songs in the MUSIC (M) folder in the desired order .
63 Changing the play or der of files in a pla ylist Use the follo wing procedure to change the pla y order of files in a playlist. 1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX button, and then use the V OL (+/–) button or / button to select one fr om “P1” to “P5”.
64 De-registering a file from a pla ylist (MYLIST) Use the follo wing procedure to de-register a file from a pla ylist. • De-registering a file from a pla ylist does not erase the actual file. 1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX button, and then use the V OL (+/–) button or / button to select one fr om “P1” to “P5”.
65 De-registering all files from a pla ylist (MYLIST) Use the follo wing procedure to de-register all files from a pla ylist. • De-registering a file from a pla ylist does not erase the actual file. 1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX button, and then use the V OL (+/–) button or / button to select one fr om “P1” to “P5”.
66 66 Setting up the timer Y ou can set the timer to record, play file, or activ ate the beep sound at a designated time. 71 About the recyc le bin function If you turn on the recycle bin function, when you erase a file on the unit, it goes into the RECYCLE ( ) folder . Therefore, y ou can still recov er the file from the RECYCLE ( ) folder later . This is v er y useful when you accidentally er ase a file.

73 Recovering a file fr om the RECYCLE f older 1 Select the RECYCLE ( ) folder . Selecting a folder (page 17) 2 Press the / button to select a file you want to reco ver , and then press the ERASE button. The “RECYCLE BIN” menu appears . • Y ou can press the /OK button to pla y files stored in the RECYCLE folder .
74 • When a file is reco vered from the RECYCLE f older , its file name c hanges and it is placed at the end of the folder . • In step 5 , if “* FOLDER FULL CANNO T RETURN” appears, this indicates that the n umber of files in the original folder has reached its limit.
75 Erasing a file Y ou can select a file in a folder and then erase it. • If the recycle bin function is turned off ( page 110), once you erase a file , it can no longer be recov ered. Therefore , bef ore erasing a file, alw ays chec k the content of the file to make sure y ou really do not need it any more.

77 Erasing all files in a folder Y ou can use the following procedure to er ase all files in a folder . • If the recycle bin function is turned off ( page 110), once you erase a file , it can no longer be recov ered. Therefore , bef ore erasing a file, alw ays chec k the content of the file to make sure y ou really do not need it any more.

79 Formatting the internal memory or a microSD car d When you f ormat the internal memory or a microSD car d, even if the recyc le bin function is turned on, all files in the internal memory or on the microSD card are completely erased and can no longer be recovered.
80 5 Press the / button to select “YES”, and then press the /OK button. • If y ou do not want to f ormat, select “NO” and then press the /OK button. • While f ormatting is in progress, y ou cannot cancel the operation. • While f ormatting is in progress, do not remov e the microSD card or the battery .

87 Changing the recording mode Y ou can change the sound quality for microphone recording or line-in recording. This allows y ou to provide the best sound quality for the particular pur pose. 1 T urn on the power . Fr om the basic screen, press the MENU/ PLA Y LIST b utton.
88 Changing the microphone sensitivity Y ou can change the microphone sensitivity according to the recording situation. Change the microphone sensitivity if you find recorded sound too small or too large. 1 T urn on the power . Fr om the basic screen, press the MENU/ PLA Y LIST b utton.
89 Changing the “MIC ALC” setting MIC ALC refers to Microphone A uto Le v el Control. When recording meetings and talks, turn on the “MIC ALC” setting. When recording musical instruments or sound from the nature where you w ant to manually adjust the recording le vel, turn off this setting.
90 Changing the microphone mode The unit comes with built-in omnidirectional stereo microphone and z oom microphone that you can choose according to the recording scene .
91 Setting the low cut filter The low cut filter reduces low frequency sound to enable y ou to obtain clear recording. This is helpful when you w ant to filter out unwanted sound, such as air conditioning, when recording a meeting. 1 T urn on the power , and press the MENU/PLA Y LIST b utton.
92 Using the auto divide function When you are perf orming line-in recording from a CD play er , MD pla yer , or another external device , you can use the auto divide function to automatically divide recorded input into files.
93 OFF: Do not use the self timer function. 5sec: Recording star ts 5 seconds after you press the REC b utton. 10sec: Recording starts 10 seconds after you press the REC b utton. 30sec: Recording starts 30 seconds after you press the REC b utton. 5 Press the MENU/PLA Y LIST button to e xit the menu.
94 Using the V AS function If the “V AS” (V oice Activated System) setting is “ON” and the unit is ready f or recording, recording star ts automatically when the unit detects sound. When the sound drops below a cer tain lev el, recording automatically pauses (recording standby).
95 From the basic screen, press the REC button. When the unit detects sound, it star ts recording automatically . When it cannot detect sound, it pauses (recording standby); the elapsed time and the V AS indicator flash. • Pressing the ST OP/BA CK b utton stops recording.
96 Changing the “REPEA T” setting Y ou can play files repeatedly (repeat playbac k). This means you can just pla y a file repeatedly , or repeat playing files in a folder either in sequence or r andomly . 1 T urn on the power (or during playbac k), and then press the MENU/PLA Y LIST b utton.
97 Setting phrase playbac k (slight rewind) During playbac k, this function enables y ou to rewind b y only the specified number of seconds. This is useful when you are listening to shor t sections of music or just missed an impor tant audio por tion.
98 Setting time skip During playbac k, you can skip f orward or backw ard by the time interval you ha v e specified. This allows y ou to quickly mov e to a position for pla ybac k, or repeat playbac k of the same por tion in a file. 1 T urn on the power (or during playbac k), and then press the MENU/PLA Y LIST b utton.
99 Setting the sound equalizer By setting the sound equalizer , y ou can enjo y music using your f a vorite sound quality . • The sound equaliz er function is valid only during pla yback using stereo earphones.

101 Setting the recording scene select function The unit provides the f ollowing f our preset recording scenes that you can edit to y our liking. Y ou can also use F A V ORITE1 to F A V ORITE3 to create and register your f a vorite recording scenes. The following tab le lists the recording scenes as well as the settings you can change.
102 Customizing a recording scene Y ou can customize the preset recording scenes. Changes made to a scene are sav ed. 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Press the SCENE/A-B button. 3 Press the / button to select a recording scene.
103 7 Change the value of the selected setting. The method is different depending on what is selected in step 4 . For a description of the methods, see the pages indicated below .
104 Restoring a recording scene to its default Y ou can use the following procedure to restore (initialize) a recording scene to its default. 1 T urn on the power . T urning on the power (page 22) 2 Press and hold the SCENE/A-B button f or more than 2 seconds.
