This chap ter giv es yo u a general intr oductio n to th e system unit and tell s you how t o select a site a nd set u p the system. It also inc ludes a simple tr oubleshooting section to help you to check yo ur system bef ore yo u as k f or t ec hnic al sup po rt.
3 Over view The AcerPower 4400 is an all-in-one, high-per formance system that supports the Intel Pentium III C PU. It utilizes the PCI (Peripheral Component Interface) and the AGP (A ccelerated Graphics Port) bus designs. Both de signs improve system perfo rmance, enabling the sys tem to supp ort var ious multimedia functions and applications.
Chapter 1 Getti ng Star ted 4 Preinstallation The preinstallation process in volves the following activities: ❑ Selecting a site ❑ Unpacking components Selecting a Site Consider the following when selecting a site for your comp ut er: ❑ Determine the best site for yo ur system.
5 Features The basic configuration consists of a system unit, a keyboard, a CD-ROM drive, a diskette driv e, a fixed disk drive and a mouse. 9 Connectin g the Mo nitor Plug the monitor signal cable into the VGA connector on the rear panel. Connectin g the Mo use Plug the mouse cable into the m ouse connector on the rear panel.
Chapter 1 Getti ng Star ted 10 Connectin g the Printer (optio nal) Check your printer before you connect it to your system. If you have a parallel printer, co nnect it to the parallel port on the rear panel. If you have a serial printer or other serial peripheral, connect it to the serial port (COM2).
11 Connectin g Multimed ia Compon ents Your system also supports op tional multimedia features. Connect the multimedia compone nts as shown below: Ap4400-e.
Chapter 1 Getti ng Star ted 12 Connectin g to the Network ( optional) Your system may come with a LAN (Local Area N etwork) card for network connection. To conne ct your system to the network, plug the network cabl e into the card’s network port. Ap4400-e.
13 Connectin g USB Devices (optio nal) The USB ports on the rear pa nel enable the system to support additional serial devices witho ut using up your system resources. To connect a USB device, simp ly plug the device cable into a USB port on the rear panel.
Chapter 1 Getti ng Star ted 14 Turning On Your Computer After you have connected all peripherals and cables, follow these steps to turn on your co mputer: 1. Turn on all peripherals conne cted to the system such as the monitor, printer, fax, speak ers, etc.
15 T urning Off Y our Computer 1. Turn off all peripherals conne cted to the system such as the monitor, printer, fax, speak ers, etc. 2. Press the power butt on located on the front of the system unit for at least four seconds. Quickly pressing the button may put the system in the Suspend mode only.

17 Printer does n’t work ❑ Is the printer power turned off ? ❑ Is the printer cable connected to the correct port (serial or parallel)? ❑ Are your application and the p rinter configured for the same operating values? Be sur e there is no conflict with any port on an add-on card.

Chapter 2 Syste m Bo ard I nfo rmati o n 30 Hard Disk Support The board comes with an enhanc ed PCI IDE controller that supports PIO mode 4 and Ultr a DMA (Direct Memory Access) mode data transfers. Two PCI IDE interfaces are mounted on the board to enable the system to sup port a maximum of four IDE hard disks, or any other ID E devices.
31 Audio Function For its audio solution, the boar d comes with a PCI-based aud io controller and the following por ts: ❑ Mono microphone port ❑ Stereo line-in port ❑ Stereo line-out port ❑ Game/MIDI port These connectors enable the sy stem to accommodate external audio devices.
Chapter 2 Syste m Bo ard I nfo rmati o n 32 USB Support USB is a new serial bus design that is capable of cascading l ow and medium-speed periphera ls (less than 12 Mbps) such as a keyboard, mouse, joystick, scanner , printer and mode m/ISDN. With U SB, complex cable connections a t the back panel of your PC can be eliminated.
33 Hardware Monitoring Function The Hardware Monitoring function al lows you to check the system resources, either locally o r in a computer network, by using software such as Acer ADM ( Advanced Desktop Manager).
Chapter 2 Syste m Bo ard I nfo rmati o n 34 W ake-on Modem Function The W ake-on Modem function enables the system to resume from shutdown or suspend mo de by monitoring the fax/ modem (or any de vice of similar ty pe) activities. Any signal or activity detected from the Mode m Ring-in connector automatically returns the system to normal operation.
35 W ake-on LAN Function This system board implements a WO L connector . T o use the LAN W ake-up function, you need to install a network card that supports this feature. In addition, you also need to install a network management software such as AD M (Advanced Desktop Manager).

39 The A ward BIOS utility is a hardware configuration p rogram built into your system’s Basic Inp ut/Output System (BIOS). It supports a jumper -less design that automatica lly detects the CPU voltage and frequency. If you made some changes in the CMOS settings (BIOS) and your system fails to boot, do the following: 1.

61 Load Setup Defaults The default setup values may not be the best setting for your motherboard, but these v alues are qualified as reliable settings , especially if you have limited loading of add-on cards and memory size (for example, a system that contains only a VGA/ Sound card and two DIMMs).

73 Installation Precautions Before you i nstall any system component, we recommend tha t you read the following sections. T hese sections contain important ESD precautions, preinstallatio n and postinstallation instructions.

Chapter 4 Upgr adin g the Syst em 78 Replacing th e Housing Co ver 1. Position the top cover on the housi ng, aligning the sides with the rails. Allow a 10 mm distance between the edge of the cover and the front panel . 2. Slide the cover forward until it f its into place.
79 Installing Additional Memor y The three 168-pin sockets onboard support SDRAM-type DIMMs. Y ou may i nstall 32-MB, 64-MB, or 128-MB (single and double density) DIMMs for a maximum of 384-MB system memory . The SDRAM DIMMs should wor k under 3.3 volts only; 5-volt memory devices are not supported .
Chapter 4 Upgr adin g the Syst em 80 Installing a DIMM 1. Turn off and unplug the computer . 2. Remove the housing to access the system board. See Board Layout on page 26 for the location of the DIMM sockets. 3. Open the clips on the socket. 4. Align the DIMM with the socke t.
81 Removing a DIMM 1. Press the holding clips on both sid es of the socket outward to release the DIMM. 2. Gently pull the DIMM out of t he socket. Reconfigu ring the S ystem The system automatically detec ts the amount of memory installed. Run Setup to view the new value for total system memory and make a note of it.
Chapter 4 Upgr adin g the Syst em 82 Upgrading the CPU Removing the CPU Note: Obser ve th e ESD pre cautions on page 73 when inst alling or remo ving a system com ponen t. Before you can replace or upgrade your processor , you need to remove the previously installed processor on the system board.

85 2. Plug the fan/heatsink cables i nto the fan and thermal connectors. See “Jumpers and Connectors” on page 27 for the location of the connector s on the system board. War n ing ! Chapter 4 Upgr adin g the Syst em 86 Replacing the Hard Disk Follow these steps to replace the h ard disk drive: 1. Remove the cover as shown on p age 75. 2. Remove the screw that secures the metal b racket frame to the housing. 3. Lift the metal bracket frame as shown below and disconnect all cables connected to the hard disk and 3.
87 4. Remove the four screws that attach the hard disk to the metal bracket frame and pull out the hard disk drive. 5. Install a new 3.5-inch hard disk drive and secure it with the fours screws that you have removed p reviously. 6. Reattach the metal bracket fram e and secure it with the scre w.
