Getting Started 5 Activating your de vice If you purchased your device at a Verizon Wireless store, it is activated and ready to use. If you received a new device by mail, it may need to be activa ted before you can use it. T o activate your device, choose from the following: • Visit a V erizon Wireless store.
6 Charging the Batter y Y our devi ce comes with a Wall /USB Charger (Outle t Connector , Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard AC power outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the batter y before using your device for the first time.

8 Y our Google Account Y our new device uses your Goog le account to f ully utilize its Android features, including Gmail, Ma ps, Naviga tion, Google T alk and the Android Market. When you turn on your device for the first time, set up a connect ion with your ex isting Google account, or create a new Googl e account.
Getting Started 9 T ask Manager Y our device can run a pplicatio ns simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your device, and to end runni ng applications to ex tend battery life.
10 Memor y Car d Y our device supports removabl e microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards, for storage of m usic, pictures, vi deos, and other files. Note: Y ou can only store music files that you own (from a CD or purchased with the device) on a memory card.

16 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home screen. 1. Applications that you do wnload and install f rom the Android Market or from the we b are also added to the Applications screen. Contacts and Accounts 29 Section 3: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage cont acts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. Wi th synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that cha nges in your accounts.
30 Setting Up a Facebook account Note: Y ou must register your device with your social networking site before using the device to access the network. 1. From a Ho me screen, press the Menu Key ➔ Settings ➔ Accounts and sync ➔ Add account ➔ Facebook .

32 Link ed Contacts Y our device can synchronize wi th multiple accounts, including Google, Corpora te Exchange, a nd other email providers, plus social networking sites like Fa c ebook, T witter , and MySpace. When you synchronize co ntacts fr om these account s with your device, you may have mult iple contacts for one person.
Contacts and Accounts 33 Sending Na mecar ds Sending a Namecar d (vCard) Y ou can send contact namecards as a vCards via Bl uetooth to other Bluetooth devices, or via Em ail or Gm ail as an attachment. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.
34 My Profile My profile is your ow n contact re cord. Y ou can send My profile as a vCard via Bluetoot h or as an attachment via Email or Gmail. 1. From a Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. Press the Menu Key ➔ More ➔ My profile to display your contact informa tion.
Contacts and Accounts 35 Groups Assign contacts to Gro ups to make searching for contacts faster , or to quickly ca ll or send me ssages to group me mbers. Y ou can also assign a ringtone to a group, to easi ly recognize incoming calls from group members.

Contacts and Accounts 37 Backup Assistant Backup Assistant is a fr ee wireless service th at saves a copy of your Con tacts to a secure web site. If your device is lost, stolen or damaged, Backup Assistant can rest ore your saved contacts to a new device, wirelessly .
38 Section 4: Entering T ext This section describes how to ente r words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Vir tual QWERTY K eyboar d Y our device uses a virtual QWERTY keyboard for text entr y . Use the keyboard to enter letters, punctuation, numbers, and other characters into te xt entry fields or applications.
Entering T ext 39 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype is a new way t o enter text on touch screens. Instead of touching each key, use your finger to trace over each letter of a word. For each word, place your fi nger on the first letter and gl ide to the subseq uent letters, lifting on the last letter .

Entering T ext 41 Entering T ext Using the Samsung Keypad The Samsung Keypad is a custom virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input characters by tapping the on- screen keys with your fing er , or use speech recognit ion. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and di splays them.
42 Section 5: Messaging This section describes how to se nd and receive messages, and other features associ ated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device supports these types of messages: • T ext messages : Send and receive simple messages containing text to other mobile devices or email addresses (a lso known as SMS).

44 Manag ing Me ssa ges Thr eaded View Messages you send and receive to the same contact, number or address are grouped to gether as a “thread”. Threaded messages allow you to see all the messages you exchanged with a cont act or other recipient, as a conversa tion, with the l atest messag e displayed first.
