Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot. 4 Replace the battery and back cover . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .

Getting star ted 19 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode . • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute or Vibrate . • Open the notifications panel at the top of the scr een, and then tap Sound or Vibrate .

Basics 22 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 26 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker). P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 27 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time .
Basics 28 Using the Multi W indow panel T o show the Multi Window panel , tap and hold . The Multi W indow panel appears at the left side of the screen. Selec t one application, and then drag another application t o a new location. Y ou can launch the same application on the two window s at the same time.
Basics 29 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 30 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 31 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 32 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 33 T ap the widgets panel area at the upper part of the screen. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Rearranging panels Moving a panel Scroll left or right on the widgets panel area, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 34 Opening from r ecently-used applica tions Pr ess and hold the Home button to open the list of recen tly-used applications. Selec t an application icon t o open. Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance .
Basics 35 Rearranging panels Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to uninstall it.
Basics 36 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 37 Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a word with a finger . Suggested w ords appear as characters are ent ered.
Basics 38 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 39 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 40 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 41 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 42 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 43 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
44 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 45 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 46 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Message : Send a message. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 47 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 48 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.

Communication 51 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the right side of the c ontacts list for quick scrolling , by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 52 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option. Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.

Communication 54 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 55 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 56 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 57 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 58 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Keep the message for long-term storage . Mark the message as a reminder . Delete the message. Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Reply to all recipients or f or ward the message to others.
Communication 59 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . W eb & network 66 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o transf er files bet ween y our device and a web storage service, tap , selec t files, and then tap .
W eb & network 67 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and share the content . When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.
W eb & network 68 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain inf ormation about products. The battery contains a built-in NFC antenna. Handle the ba tter y carefully t o av oid damaging the NFC antenna. If the screen is locked, y our device will not read NFC tags or r eceive data.
W eb & network 69 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as videos, images , and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.

Media 71 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 72 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 78) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 73 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 74 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and mo ve the camera in one direction. When two panorama guide frames are aligned, the camer a automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 75 Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer the r ecording quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .

Media 80 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the following functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 81 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap .
Media 82 Using T ag buddy T ap → Settings → T ag buddy , and then drag the T ag buddy switch to the right t o display a con textual tag (weather , location, date , and person ’ s name) when opening an image . Organising with f olders Creat e a folder to organise images or videos stor ed in the device.

90 Utilities S Planner Use this application to manage ev ents and tasks. T ap S Planner on the Applications screen. Crea ting events or tasks T ap , and then use one of the f ollowing methods: • Add ev ent : Enter an ev ent with an optional repeat setting .
Utilities 91 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Invite others to the ev ent by sending a message or email.
Utilities 92 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.

105 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. C onnec tions Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 106 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
Settings 107 F light mode This disables all wireless functions on your devic e. Y ou can use only non-network services. Data usage Keep track of your da ta usage amount, and customise the settings f or the limitation. • Mobile data : Set the device to use data connections on any mobile network.
