Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Be careful not to damage the main and sub ant ennas with shar p objects. If the antenna ar ea is scratched or damaged , the device and antenna per formance ma y be affected.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customizing these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards. 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .

Basics 21 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motions and gestures , and then drag the Motions and gestures switch to the right.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone or pause media playback (when using the speaker).
Basics 26 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 27 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e’ s features . I t displays indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and mor e. The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 28 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the trash can that appears at the t op of the Home screen.
Basics 29 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 30 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customizable grid view .
Basics 31 Rearranging panels Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Downloaded apps → → Uninstall .
Basics 32 Changing the k eyboard type T ap any t ex t field, open the notifications panel , tap Choose input method , and then select the type of keyboard to use . Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter numerals and punctuation marks.

Basics 34 Enabling and C onfiguring Swype T o enable S wype: 1 F rom a screen where y ou can enter text, touch and drag down fr om the Notifications area then tap Select input method . 2 T ap the Swype radio button. It will turn green. The Swype keyboard is displa yed .
Basics 35 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 36 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 37 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 38 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d .

40 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Home screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 41 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 42 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . Sending a message T ap → Send message to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 43 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle . If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When a second call comes in, end or hold the first call. Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 44 Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 45 • T ap the search field at the t op of the contac ts list and enter sear ch criteria. Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Make a voice call . • : Compose a message .
Communication 46 F av ourite con tac ts T ap F av ourites . Add c ontac ts to F av ourites T ap , selec t one or more con tacts, then tap Done . Remov e contac ts from fa vourites T ap → Remov e from fav ourites, select one or more contacts, then tap Done .
Communication 47 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 48 • Add r ecipient : Add r ecipients to receiv e the message. • Inser t smiley: Enter emoticons. • Add subject : Enter a subject. • Add slide : Add message slides . • Schedule message : Set a specified time and date from a message t o be sent.
Communication 49 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled email . Tick Scheduled email , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 50 Gmail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Gmail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 51 Labels Gmail uses labels rather than f olders. When Gmail is launched, it display s messages labeled Inbox. T ap → Refresh to manually retriev e new messages. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 52 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
53 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share, sa ve, or print the curren t webpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 54 T ap Internet on the Apps screen. T ap → Settings → Set homepage , and then select one of the following: • Curr ent page : Set the current webpage as y our homepage. • Quick access : Set the quick access list as your homepage .
W eb & network 55 Chr ome Use this application to sear ch for information and br owse webpages . T ap Chrome on the Applications screen. W eb & network 56 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. W eb & network 57 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain inf ormation about products. Y ou can also use this f eature t o make payments and buy tickets f or transpor tation or ev ents after downloading the requir ed applications.
W eb & network 58 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as videos, images , and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.
59 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 60 When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 61 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean. Utilities 78 Alarm Setting alarms T ap , set a time for the alarm to go off , selec t days f or the alar m to r epeat, and then tap S ave . • Snooze : Set an inter val and the number of times f or the alarm to repeat after the pr eset time. • Smar t alarm : Set a time and tone for the smart alarm.
