Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding int ernal compartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot if the SIM is not detected. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone. Char ging a Battery Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li -ion batter y . The T ravel Adapter that is used to charge t he battery, i s included with your phone.
8 2. Plug the flat end o f the T ravel Adapter into the P ower/ Accessor y Interface connector an d the other end into a standard AC wall outlet . 3. When charging is finished, remove the flat end from the interface connector jack on the phone .
Getting Started 9 Setting Up Y our V oice Mail 1. In Idle mode, press , then touch and hold . Y ou may be prompted to enter a password. Note: Y ou can also access your voicemail from the on-screen keypad by touching then pressing or touch Call . 2. Follow the tutorial to crea te a password, record a greeting, and record your name.

16 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a697 has done away with the n eed for navigation wheels or keypads. The a697 is complete ly navigable by either an on-screen touch or scroll. • T ouching an on-scr een option activates th e feature.
Menu Navigation 17 Navigating T hr ough M enus As you navigate through a menu, options display on the screen as scrollable li sts. Menu tabs (located at the bottom of most screens, provide access to additiona l screen options). T o navigate a scrollable list: 1.

20 The following table contains a description of each available Widget. Widg et Manage r : allows you to choose which widgets will be displa yed on th e widget bar . Analog Clock : displays the current time on an analog c lock. Digital Clock : displays the current time on a digital clo ck.
Menu Navigation 21 Facebook : opens the fac ebo ok.com web page. To d a y : displays day of the week and date. Calendar : allows you to access the Calendar feature. With the Calendar feature, you can: • Consult the calendar by month, week, or day . • Set schedules and no te anniversaries.
22 Record Audio : allows you to record voice memos. For more information, refer to “Record Audio ” on page 135. Memo : allows you to access the Memo feature. For more infor mation, refer to “Memo” on page 140. Time r : allows you to easil y access your Timer .
Menu Navigation 23 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop (Idle Scre en) to use the application or feature, then dra g it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. There are thr ee different widg et desktops you can use. Y ou can have different widgets on all t hree desktops.
24 Note: Y ou can drag a widget to a location of your choice on the desktop or , just touch the widget on the widget bar and it will display in the center of the desktop. R ear ranging Widge ts Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets.

26 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a ca ll. It also includes the features and function ality associated with ma king or answering a call. For more informat ion, refer to “Call Settings” on page 55. Making a Call 1.

Call Functions 29 Other A nsw eri ng Opti ons When receiving an incomi ng call: 䊳 Briefly p ress down either volume key ( ) to mute the ring tone. – or – T o mute the ring tone when the phone is facing upwards, flip the phone over so that it is facing down.

Call Functions 33 Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, to a djust the earpiece volum e, use the Vol um e keys on the left side of the phone. 䊳 Press the Up volume key to increase the v olume level and press the Down volume key to de crease the volume le vel.

Call Functions 35 Switchin g of f the Microp hone ( Mute) Y ou can t emporarily switc h your pho ne’ s microphone off, so that the other person cannot hear you. Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you.
36 1. Press to answer th e first incoming call. 2. Press or Accept to answer the next incoming call. The first call is automa tically put on hold. 3. Join the first two callers into a single multi-party call by touching Join . 4. T o discon nect one of the callers, to uch Split .
Entering T ext 37 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the nu m ber of key strokes needed t o enter text.
38 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eypad There are three main keypad la yout keys that will change the on- screen keys within the QWERTY key pad. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
Entering T ext 39 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and touch . The small circle above T9 will turn green and will appear in the upp er right corner of the screen. 3. Begin typing a word. A list of word options displays and includes a number indicating th e words availabl e to chose from.
40 Note: The Emo option is available only when mode has been selected. 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and touch . 3. T ouch either or to cyc le through a dditional keys. 4. T ouch to co mplete the messag e and return to the previous screen.
Entering T ext 41 Using Numeric in P or trait Mode The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouc h the T ext I nput Mo de button a t the bottom of t he screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter .
42 3. Use your finger tip to write out each ch aracter . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key ( )to create a space betw een letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
Entering T ext 43 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activates th e Initial uppercase function.

48 Widget Allows you to se lect which widget a pplicatio ns will appear docked within the Widget bar on the Idle screen. For more informat ion, refer to “Widgets” on page 19. Font T ype Y ou can select the text style for the informationa l text displayed on your phone.

Phone Settings Y ou can customize va rious phone settings. 䊳 From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone . Langua ge This menu allows you to select a display language for T ext language and T ext Input mode.

52 䊳 T ouch On or Off from the Lock Phone field. Lock SIM Card When the Lock SIM Card fea ture is enabled, your phone only works with the current SIM. Y ou must enter the lock code to unlock the SIM so you can use a different SIM card. Once you have entered the loc k code, you are asked t o confirm your password.
Changing Y our Settings 53 Fixed Dialing Mode FDN (Fixed Dial Number) mode, if supported by your SIM card, restricts your outgoi ng calls to a limited set of phone numbers. When this feature i s enabled, you can make calls only to phone numbers stored in the FDN list on the SIM card.
54 4. Enter the new PIN code and touch . 5. Re-enter (reconfirm) the same code and touch . Change PIN2 code The Change PIN2 code feature allow s you to change your current PIN2 to a new one. Y ou must first enter the current PIN2 (obtained from A T&T) before yo u can specify a new one.
Changing Y our Settings 55 Air pl ane Mode Airplane Mode allows you to use many of your phone’ s features, such as Games, Voice no te, etc., when you are in an airplane o r in any other area where mak ing or receiving calls or data is prohibited.

T ouch Ye s or No to enable or disable the visibility (discoverability) of your phone. • Y our phone becomes vi sible to ot her devices when you tra nsmit your devi ce’ s name to others in yo ur area. Thi s allows ot her device s to detect you r phone and request a co nnection.
Changing Y our Settings 59 • Bluetooth Stereo Headset : used to make calls a nd listen to music through the Bluetooth stereo headset. • Serial Port : used to connect to other Bluetooth devi ces through a virtual serial port. • Dial up : used to provide Internet access for Blueto oth devices through the phone’ s modem.

Understanding Y our Address Book 65 Section 7: Understanding Y our Address Book This section allows you to manage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in your Address B ook. Address Book entries can be sorted by name, entry , or group.

76 Settings ➔ Used Space. • Phone : tells you how many Address Book entries (out of a possible 2000) are in use. •U S I M : tells you h ow many entries ar e in use on your S IM card.
Messaging 77 Section 8: Messaging This section describes how to send or receive different ty pes of messages. It also includes the fe a tures and fu nctionality associated with messaging.
78 Note: If the number of recipients are less than 10, all members in the group will be added. Y ou will need to delete any unnecessary members in the list by selecting the trash can icon and deleting unwanted entries. 3. T ouch the empty text field an d use the on-screen keypad to enter a message.
Messaging 79 – Business Card : allows you to insert the contact information for an entry from Address Book directly to your message as an attached file. – Event : allows you to insert an Event entry from your calendar directly to your message as an atta ched file.
80 3. T ouch a message you wish to view . The selected message appears in the display . Tip: When viewing a text message, press the Up or Down volume keys to increase or decrease the font size of the message text. Six different font sizes are available.

If a mes sage is stored in the phone’ s memory , it is then saved to th e SIM card.

Camera 87 Section 9: Camera This section explains ho w to use the camera on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoot video by using th e built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapi xel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Import ant!: Do not take photos of people without their permission.
88 Note: The number of JPEG pictures remaining on the selected media appears in the upper-right of the screen. This is an approximate number of total pictures which can be taken at the current image size. 4. If desired, before taking the ph oto, you can touch on-screen icons to access various camera options.
Camera 89 Recording Mode : allows you to set th e recording mode to either: Normal (l imited only by available spac e on destination location) or Li mit for MMS (limited by MMS size restrictions). (Recording Mo de i s only available in Camcorder mode).

Camera 91 • Play Slideshow ( ): to play the available images and videos (from the Pictures and Videos folders) within a sl ideshow. T ouch the Up/ Down arrows to set the duration of each on-screen file. • Edit ( ): allows you to edit the current image using any of the following: – Effects : allows you to choose fr om among several effects.
92 • Send : lets you send the currently ac t ive image as part of a new multimedia message, to an external device via Blue tooth, or to HP’ s online Snapfish ® service. • Set as : allows you to assign the current image as e ither your current Wallpaper , or as a display image used by a spe cific entr y within your Address Book.

Camera 95 – Lock/Unlock : allows you to lock/unlo ck the video file to prevent deletion. Lock prev ents the video clip from being deleted; Unlock allows the video c lip to be deleted.
