Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding int ernal compartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD) for data storage of such th ings as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 4. Slide the cover in the direction shown while pressing down until you hear a light click (2). Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone. Char ging a Battery Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li -ion batter y .
8 2. Plug the flat end o f the T ravel Adapter into the P ower/ Accessor y Interface connector an d the other end into a standard AC wall outlet . 3. When charging is finished, remove the flat end from the interface connector jack on the phone .

Understanding Y our Phone 13 Display Layout Y our display screen provides a wealth of information ab out the phone’ s status and options.The display has 3 main areas: Icons This list identifies th e symbols you’ll see on your phone’ s display and Indicator area: Displays your current signal streng th.
14 Displays when y our phone is communicati ng with the 3G network. Displays when an internal microSD memory card is detected. Displays when t he phone is connected to a co mputer via a supported US B cable connection. Displays within the Indica to rs area when a new text message is received.

16 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the men u na vi gation fo r your phone. It also includes an outline of all the a vailable menus associa ted with your phone. Some menu optio ns are controlled by the SIM provided by your servic e provider .
Menu Navigation 17 Using Shortcut Numbers Numbered me nu items, such as menus, sub-menus, and options can be quickly accessed by us ing their shortcut numbers. In Menu mode, Main Menus can be accessed by pressing the number keys (1 to 0, * and #) co rrespondin g to their loca tion on the screen.
18 Section 4: Entering T e xt This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters usin g the Q WERTY keyboard-sty le keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the numb er of key strokes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 19 Changing the T ext Input Mode The available T ext Input modes are: Fn ( 123 numeric), Abc , and Symbols (Sym) . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the upper right corner of the screen t o identify the mode. • Abc : activates the default alphabet keys.

Call Functions 23 When you have an ac tive call and a call on hold , you may switch between the two calls, changi ng the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold. T o s witch between two ca lls: 䊳 Press Options ➔ Swap . T o end a specific call: 䊳 Press to end the current call.
24 If you are enga ged in a call, you can plac e the active call on hold by selecting the New Call option and either dialing another number or answering another in coming call. Once the second call is activa ted, the followi ng options are a vailable: • Swap : Places the active call o n hold and then re-activates the call on hold.

38 Langua ge This menu allows you to select a display language for T ext language and T ext Input mode. Cho ose from Automatic, English, Français, and Español. 1. In Idle mode, select Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Language and press the key . 2. Highlight the Screen T ext field and press Change .
Changing Y our Settings 39 Slide Down Setting This setting allows you to choose what display s on the main screen when you slid e down your phone. 1. In Idle mode, select Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Slide Down Setting and press the key.
40 Note: This SIM password is typically the last four digits of the current phone number . Y ou can obtain a SIM pass word from an A T&T customer service representative. Check PIN Code • When the Check PIN Code feature is enabled, you must enter your PIN each time you switch on the phone with the SIM Card.

Change Phone Passw or d The Change Phone Password option allows yo u to change your current phone password to a ne w one.
42 4. After the phone setti ngs are reset, the Reset Phone done confirmati on displays. Once your phone has been rese t to its defaul t set tings for those selected options, it will restart itself in order to incorporate the new settings. Note: User Data such as contacts, messages, pictures, videos, and music is not deleted.

Press Save to store the new name. • Recording Time : allows you to choose the maximum limit allowed for the recorded audio file (1 Minute, 5 Minutes, 10 Minutes,15 Minute s, 30 Mi nutes , 60 Mi nutes, or Li mit f or MMS).

52 Section 7: Understanding Y our Address Book This section allows you to manage your contac ts by storing their name and number in your Addr ess Book. Y ou ca n sort Address Book entries by na me, entry, or g roup. Y ou can also synchronize your phone Address Book with A T&T Address Book, the ne twork backup service.

54 Note: Ringtones assigned to a contact will not be synchronized to A T&T Address Book. Adding More Fields to a Number While in the process of creating a new entr y or editing an ex isting contact, you can add additional fields to the entry’ s list of information.

This applicat ion allows you to tap into loc al businesses, locations, and events , connecting you to your search in real-time.

Camera 75 – : indicates that GPS is turned o n and has attained the GPS signal/ location information. Settings: Camcord er tab – Quality : allows you to set the v ideo quality to: High, Normal, or Economy . – Movie Format : allows you to set the mo vie format to MP4, 3GP , or Video Share.
76 Section 10: Mobile Video Y our phone is equipped with a WAP (Wireless A pplication Protocol) browser which allows yo u to access the Internet and download media f iles directly to your phone. These media files display using the built-in Media Pl ayer .
Mobile Video 77 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Mobile V ideo ➔ Customize Mobile Video ➔ Edit My Favorites . The screen is composed of two sect ions: • Manage My Favorites: lists the current Favorite s list and gives you the option of opening the page or deleting it from your Favorites.
78 Section 11: Messaging This section describes how to send or receive diffe rent types of messages. It al so includes the features and functional ity associated with messaging.
Messaging 79 • Groups : to select a recipien t from the Group l ist. • Recent Contacts : to select a recipient from a list of recentl y sent messages. 3. Select the message field and use the QW ERTY keypad to enter a message. For more information, refer to “Entering Te x t ” on page 18.
80 Using Message Options Message options at the Inbox level diffe r according to the message type, what you have done with the messa ge, and whether you are viewing the message. 䊳 While viewing the list of me ssages highlight a message and press the Options soft key to ac cess the following: •V i e w : allows you to view the message.
Messaging 81 Deleting Messages When your phon e’ s memory is full, an notificati on message displays and you cannot receiv e any new messages. Use the Delete option to eras e obsolete messages, freeing memory for new messages. Y ou can delete th e messages e ith er individually or all at one time.
82 R eceiving Options This option specifies the catego ry of messages you want to receive and allo ws you to set the fol lowing: • Send Deliver y Report : when this option is enabled, the phon e informs the network whether or not your message was rece ived.

88 The mes This menu option allows you t o shop for new themes so you can customize your phone. 1. Press Menu ➔ AppCenter ➔ Color Graphics . 2. Foll o w the on-screen instructions to purchase a theme . Answ er T ones This menu option allows you to shop for answer tones using the built-in browser .
A T&T Music 89 Section 14: A T&T Music A T&T Music is a music service which provides you access to Music Player , Shop Music, MusicID 2, XM Radio, Music Videos, Make-UR-T ones, Community , and Music Applications.

94 Note: If there are no items present in the playlist, click the Edit Playlist button and begin adding the music files from among the various media categories. 8. From the Windows Media Player application, ensure that the SGH-A687 device displays in the upper -right corner of the screen.
