24 _ Getting started Configuring network protocol via the machine You can set up TCP/IP network paramet ers, follow the st eps listed be low. 1. Make sure your machine is connected to the network with an RJ-45 Ethernet cable. 2. Make sure you have turned on th e machine.
Getting started _2 5 INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE You have to install the machine software for printing. The software includes drivers, applications, and other user friend ly programs. 1. Make sure that the network setup for yo ur ma chine is completed. (See "Setting up the network" on page 23 .
26 _ Getting started MACHINE'S BASIC SETTINGS After installation is complete, you ma y want to set the machine's default settings. Refer to the next section if you would like to set or change values.
Getting started _2 7 Setting sounds You can control the following sou nds: • Key Sound: Turns the key sound on or o ff. With this option set t o On , a tone sounds each time a key is pressed . • Alarm Sound: Turns the alarm sound on or off. With this option set to On , an alarm tone sounds when an error occurs or fax communication ends.
28 _ Getting started Using the save modes Toner Save mode Toner save mode allows your ma chine to use less toner on each page. Activating this mode extends the lif e of the ton er cartridge beyond what one would experien ce in the n ormal mode, but it reduces print quality.

Press and hold the guide lock, and slide the paper length guide to locate it in the correct paper size slot .

Copying _3 7 CHANGING THE DEFAULT COPY SETTINGS The copy options, i ncluding darkness, origina l type, copy size, and number of copies, can b e set to those most frequentl y used. Faxing _4 7 Receiving automatically in Fax mode Your machine is preset to Fax mode at the factory. When you rece ive a fax, the machine answers the call on a specified number of rings and automatically rece ives the fax. To change the number of rings, see page 50.

60 _ Maintenance REPLACING THE TONER CARTRIDGE When the toner cartridge is completely empty, you must replace the toner cartridge. • The status LED and the toner-relat ed message on the display indicates that the toner cartridge should be re placed.

Troubleshooting _6 5 In the manual tray When you print using the manual tray and the machine dete cts that there is either no paper or that the paper has been improperly loade d, follow the next steps to release the jammed pape r. 1. Check if the paper is stuck in the feedi ng area, and if so, pull it out gently and slowly.
66 _ Troublesho oting 2. Remove the jammed paper from the duplex unit. If the paper does not come out with the duplex un it, remove the paper from the bottom of the machine. If you cannot find the jammed paper , or if there is any resistance removing the paper, stop pu lling and go to step 3.
Troubleshooting _6 7 UNDERSTANDING DI SPLAY MESSAGES Messages appear on the control panel disp lay to indicate the machine’s status or errors. Refer to the tabl es below to understand the messages’ meaning and correct the problem if necessary. Messages and their meanings are listed in alphabetical order.
68 _ Troublesho oting Memory Full The memory is full. Delete unnecessary fax jobs and retransmit after more memory becomes available. Altern atively, split the transmission into more than one operation. Not Assigned The speed button or speed dial number you tried to use ha s no number assigned to it.
Troubleshooting _6 9 SOLVING OTHER PROBLEMS The following chart lists some conditio ns that may occur and the recommended solutio ns. Follow the suggested solu tions until the problem is corrected. 70 _ Troublesho oting Printing problems CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS The machin e does not print. The machine is not receiving power. Check the power cord connections. Check th e power switch and the power source. The machine is not selected as the default printer.
Troubleshooting _7 1 Printing quality problems If the inside of the machine is dirty or paper has been loade d improperly, you may noti ce a reduction in p rint quality. See the table be low to clear the problem. The print quality of photos is not good.
72 _ Troublesho oting Vertical repetiti ve defects If marks repeatedly appe ar on the printed side of the page at even intervals: • The toner cartridge may be damaged. If a repetitive mark occurs on the page, print a cleaning sheet several times to clean the cartridge.
Troubleshooting _7 3 Copying problems Character Voids Character voids are white areas within parts of characters that should b e solid black: • If you are using transpa rencies, try ano ther type of transparency. Because of the composition of transparencies, some character voids are normal.

Troubleshooting _7 5 Common Windows problems Common Linux problems Blank areas appe ar at the bottom of each page or on o ther pages, with a small strip of text at the top. You may have chosen the wrong pa per settings in the user option setting. For deta ils about paper settings, see page 30.
76 _ Troublesho oting Some color images come out in unexpected color. This is a known bug in Ghostscript (until GNU Ghostscript version 7.xx) when the base color space of the document is indexed RGB color space and it is converted through CIE color space.

Basic Printing 15 Type Set Type to correspond to the paper loaded in the tray from which you want to print. This will let you get the best quality printout. If not, print quality ma y not be acheived as you want. Thick Paper : 24 lb to 28 lb (90~105 g/m 2 ) thick paper .

Select the appropriate se tting according to the status of your document.
