G ETTING S TARTED 2.2 Setting Up Your Machine Unpacking 1 Remo ve the machine and al l accessories from the packing carton. Make sure that the machine has been packed with the foll ow ing it em s: N OTES : • Comp onents m ay diffe r fro m countr y to country .

G ETTING S TARTED 2.4 Selecting a Lo cation Select a level , stable pla ce with ad equate space fo r air circulation. Allow extra space for opening door s and trays. The area should be w ell-ventilated and away f rom direc t sunlig ht or sources of heat, cold, and humidity .
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.5 2 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front door . 2 R emove the st arter toner cartrid ge from its bag. Gently ro ll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner . Thoroughly roll ing the cartri dge will ass ure maximum copies per cartr idge.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.6 3 Hold the toner cartridge by the handle. Slowly insert the cartridge into th e opening in the mac hine. T a bs on the sides of the cartridge and corr esponding grooves within the machine will guide the cartridge into the correct position until it locks into place completely .
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.7 2 Loading Pa per The paper tra y can hold a maximum of 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper . T o load a stack of Le tter-sized paper: 1 Pull open the paper tray and remov e it from the machine. 2 F an the edges of the pa per stack to sepa r ate the pages.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.8 N OTE : If yo u want to lo ad a d iffer ent s ized p aper , you ne ed to adjust the paper guide s. Fo r details, see page 2.9. 4 Pa y attention to the paper limit mark on b oth inside walls of the tray . P aper overloadin g may cause paper jam s.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.9 2 Changing the Size of the Paper in the Paper Tray T o load longer sizes of paper , such as Legal-sized pa per , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tray . 1 After pressing and unlatching the guide lock, s lide the paper length guide out comple tely to extend the paper tray to its full length.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.10 3 Squeeze the width guide, as shown and slide it to the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the stack. N OTES : • Do not push t he paper wid th guid e far eno ugh to cause the materia ls to war p. • If you do no t adjust the paper widt h guide, it may cause paper jams.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.11 2 Making Connections 1 If you ha ve SCX-4520/ 4520S: Skip this s tep and proceed to s tep 2. If you ha ve SCX-4720F /4720FS: Plug one end of the supplied telephon e line cord into the LINE jack on the machine and the other end into the wall jack.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.12 UK users should plug the cord of the extension phone into the supplied T AM lead and p lug the cord of the T AM lead int o th e EXT jack on the back of your machine. N OTES : • Use the T AM lead and the teleph one line cord sup plied wit h your machine.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.13 2 If you want to use a parallel printer cable, purchase only an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable and connect it to the para llel connector on your ma chine. Push the metal clips down to fit inside th e notches on the cable p lug.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.14 Turning the Machine On 1 Plug one end of the supplied thr ee-pronged electrical cord into the AC socket on the machine a nd the other end into a properly grounded AC outlet. 2 Press the power switch to turn the machine on. “W arming Up Please W a it” app ears on the display indicat ing that the machine is now on.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.15 2 Setting Up the Machine System Changing the Display Language T o cha nge the language that displays on the control panel, follow these steps: 1 Pres s Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Pres s the scroll button ( or ) until “Language” appea rs on the bottom line of the display .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.16 Setting the Machine ID ( SCX-4720F/4720FS Only) In some countries, you are required by law to indicate your fax number on any fax you send. The Machine ID , conta ining your telephone number and name (or company name), wi ll be printed at the top of each page sent from your machine.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.17 2 Entering Characters U sing the Number Keypad As you perform v arious tasks, you need to enter names and numbers. For example, when you set up your machine, y ou enter your name (or your compan y’ s name) and telephone number .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.18 Keypa d Letter s and Numbers Changing Numbers o r Name s If you make a mista ke while entering a number or name, press the button to delete t he last digit or character .
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.19 2 Setting the Date and Time The curre nt date a nd time a re shown on the display when your machine is on and re ady to work. For the SCX -47 20F/4720FS, all of your faxes will have the date and time printed on them .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.20 5 Pres s Enter when the time and da te on the display is correct. When you enter a wrong number , the ma chine beeps and does not proceed to the next step.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.21 2 3 Use the scroll button ( or ) to select th e paper tray you want to use and press Enter . 4 Use the scroll button ( or ) to find the pap er size you are using and press Enter to save it. 5 Pres s Upper Lev el . 6 Press the bu tton to scroll to “Paper T ype” an d press Enter to access the menu item.

G ETTING S TAR TED 2.23 2 Using the Save Mod es Toner Save Mode T oner Save mode allows your machine t o use less t oner on each page. Activating this mode extend s the life of the toner cartridge beyond what one w ould experience in the nor mal mode, but it reduces pr int quality .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.24 5 Press the scroll button ( or ) to displ ay “End Time” and press Enter . 6 Enter the time and date when the toll save transmission ends, using the nu mber keypad. 7 Pres s Enter to save the setting. 8 T o r eturn to Standby mode, press Stop/Clear .

The scan lamp under the docum ent glass automatica lly turns off when it is not in actual use to reduce power consumption and extend the life of the lamp.

G ETTING S TARTED 2.28 Installing Samsung Software in Windows Sys tem R equ ir ement s Before you begin, ensure that your system meets the minimum requirements. N OTE : For Windows NT 4.0/200 0/XP , the system admini strator should install the software.

G ETTING S TARTED 2.30 2 Choose the installation type. • Typical : Installs the most com mon software for your machine, such as t he PCL 6 printer driver , scanner driver , and Printer Sett ing Utility . This is recommended for most users. • Cust om : Allows you to choose the language of the software and the components you want to install.
G ETTING S TAR TED 2.31 2 4 When the test page pri nts out correctly , click Yes . If not, click No to reprint it. 5 T o register yourself as a user of Samsung Printers to receive information from Samsung, select the che ckbox and click Finish . Y ou are now sent to the Samsung web site.

P APER H ANDLING 3.2 Selecting Pri nt Materials Y ou can prin t on a variety of p rint materials, su ch as p lain paper , envelopes, labels, tr a nsparencies, and etc.. Always use print materials that mee t the guidelines for use with this machine. See “Paper Specifications” on pa ge F .
P APER H ANDLING 3.3 3 Guidelines f or Pape r and Special Ma terials When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special material, keep these guidelines in mind: • Alwa ys use pap er and other materials that conform with the specifications listed under “Paper Specifications” on p age F .
P APER H ANDLING 3.4 - T o avoid smudging caused by fingerprints, handle them carefully . - T o avoid fading, do not expose printed transparenci es to prolonged sunlight. •F o r l a b e l s : - V erify that their adhesive ma terial can tolerate a fusing temperature of 200 o C (392 o F) for 0.
P APER H ANDLING 3.5 3 The paper level indicator on the front of the paper tray shows the amount of paper cur rently left in the tray . When the tray is empty , the ind icator of the bar is co mpletely lowered. T o load pap er , p ull open the paper tray and lo ad paper w ith the side to be printed on face dow n.
P APER H ANDLING 3.6 In th e Mult ipurpose Tray The Multipurpos e tray can hold several sizes and types of print material, such as transparenci es, postcards, note car ds, and envelopes. It is useful for single page printing on letterhead or colored paper .
P APER H ANDLING 3.7 3 3 Load the print ma terial with the side t o be printed on facing up . F or envelopes, load them with the flap side dow n and with the stamp area on the top left side. N OTES : • If env elopes ja m while prin ting, try r educin g the number of envelop es in the Mul tipurp ose tray .
P APER H ANDLING 3.8 6 If you w ant the ma chine to stack the printed pa ges on the rear output slot, open the rear door to use the rear output slot. C AUTION : Make sure to open the rear output slot when yo u print on tr ansparencies . If not, they may tear whil e exiting t he machine.
P APER H ANDLING 3.9 3 3 Squeeze the width guide and a djust it to the width of the print materi al without bendi ng it. 4 If you w ant the ma chine to stack the printed pa ges on the rear output slot, open the rear door to use the rear output slot. P APER H ANDLING 3.10 Selecting an Output Location The machine has two output lo cations: the rear output slot (face up) and the front output tray (face down). T o use the front output tray , make sure that the rear door is closed. T o us e the rear output slot, open the rear door .
P APER H ANDLING 3.11 3 Printing to the Rear Output Slot (Face up) Using the rear output slot, paper comes out of the machine face up. Printing from the Multipurp ose tray to the rear output slot provides a straight pape r path .

P RINTING T ASKS 4.2 Printing a D ocument in Windows The following procedure describes th e general steps required for printing from various Windows ap plications. The exact st eps for printing a doc ument may vary depending on the ap plication pro gr am yo u ar e usi ng.
P RINTING T ASKS 4.3 4 5 T o start the pr int job, click OK or Print in the Print window . Canceling a Pri nt Job There are two ways to cancel a print job: T o sto p a print job from the control panel: Press the Stop/Clear button. Y our machine finishes printing the page that is moving through t he machine and deletes the rest of the p rint job.
P RINTING T ASKS 4.4 Printer Settings Y ou can use the Samsung SCX -4x20 Series printer properties window , which allows y ou to access all of t he printer options you need when using your machine. When the printer properties are displayed, you can review an d change whatev er settings are needed for your print job.
