ii Safety and Regulatory Information Import an t Precautions and Safety Information When using this machine, these basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock and injury to people: 1 Read and understand all instructions.
iii Ozone Safety During normal operation, this machine produces ozone. The ozone produced does not present a hazard to the operator . However , it is adv isable that the machine be operated in a well ventilated area. If you need additional information about ozone, please request your nearest Samsung dealer .

3 .5 < Getting St arted> Printing Configuration report Press and hold Stop /C le ar button for about 4 seconds to print a machine report . Please review your machines User ’s Guide to learn of addition al details. Using this Network Configuration Report , you can find your machine MAC address and IP address.
3 .6 < Getting St arted> • IP Address : Enter a new IP address for your printer the same as the computer’s IP address e xcept for the last number. For example, if your computer’s IP address is 192.168.1.150, enter 192.168.1.X. (X is nu mber between 1 a nd 254 other than the computer’s address.
3 .7 < Getting St arted> Configuring the machin e’ s wireless network Before starting you will need to know the SSID of your wireless network and the Network Key if it is encrypted . This information was set when the access point was installed.
3 .8 < Getting St arted> 5 Click Next . If wireless security setting window app ears, enter the registered password (network key) and click Next . 6 Wizard Setup Confirmation window appears, please check your wireless setup. If the setup is right, click Apply .
3 .9 < Getting St arted> Altitude adjustment The print quality is affected by atmospheric pressure, which is determined by the height of the machine above sea level. The following information will guide you on how to set your machine to the b est print quality or best quality of print.
4 .1 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> 4 Loading originals and print media This chapter introduces you how to load originals and print media into your machine.
4 .2 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> Selecting print media Y ou can print on a variety of print media , such as plain paper , labels, and transparencies.
4 .3 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> Specifications on print media Note • Due to the nature of the product, the envel ope type of media cannot be used with your machine. •Use the print media type mentioned below only . Note •When you use the thick paper (90 to 120 g/m 2 , 24 to 32 lb bond), select Th ick Paper in the paper type.
4 .4 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> Guidelines for special print media Media type Guidelines T ransparencies • T o avoid damaging the machine , use only transparencies designed for use in laser machines. • T ransparencies used in th e machine must be able to withstand the machine’s fusing temperature.
4 .5 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> Loading p aper in the tray Load the print media you use for the majority of your print job s in the tray . The tray can hold a maximum of 100 sheets of 75 g/m 2 ( 2 0 lb bond) plain paper . 1 Press the tray open butt on, then the tray pops out.
4 .6 < Loading ori ginals and pr int media> 2 After inserting p a per into the tray , whil e pinching the paper width guide as shown, move it toward the stack of p ap er until it lightly touches the side of the stack. Do not press the guide too tightly to the edge of the paper; the guide may bend the paper .
5 .1 < Copying> 5 Copying This chapter gives you informati on abo ut using your machine as a copy machine. This chapter includes: • Copying originals • Changin g the settin gs for each copy Copying originals This is the norma l and usual pro cedure for copying your orig inals.

7 .1 < Basic printing > 7 Basic printing This chapter explains common printing tasks. Y our machine allows you to print from various Windows, Maci ntosh, or Linux applications. Note The following procedure is for Windows op erating system. For Linux and Macintosh, see Software section.
8 .1 < Maintenanc e> 8 Maintenance This chapter provides information for maintaining your machine and the toner cartridge. This chapter includes: • Printing a machine report • Cleaning your .
8 .2 < Maintenanc e> 3 With a dry lint-free cloth, wipe away any dust and spilled toner from the toner cartridges area and their cavities. Note If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash it in cold water . Hot water sets toner into fabric.
8 .3 < Maintenanc e> Cleaning the scan unit Keeping the scan un it clean helps ens ure the best possib le copies. We suggest that you clean the scan unit at the start of each day and during the day , as needed. 1 Slightly dampen a soft lint-free cloth or paper towel with water .
8 .4 < Maintenanc e> 1 Press the top cover lever , completely ope n the top cover . 2 Grasp the handles on the toner cartridge and pull to re move the cartridge from the machine. 3 Holding side edges of the toner cartridge, th oroughly rock it from side to side to redistribute the toner .
8 .5 < Maintenanc e> 5 Hold the top cover and close it slowly and carefully , un til the cover is the cover is securely latched. Note If the top cover is not completely closed, the machine will not operate. Caution Be careful not to pinch your fingers , since the top cover is very heavy .
8 .6 < Maintenanc e> 4 T ake a new toner cartridge out of its p acka ge. Caution • Don't use sharp obj ects, such as a knife or scissors, to open the toner cartridge package. Y o u coul d damage the surface of the toner cartridge. • T o prevent da mage, do not expose the toner cartridge to light for more than a fe w minutes.
8 .7 < Maintenanc e> Note If the top cover is not completely closed, the machine will not operate. Caution Be careful not to pinch your fingers , since the top cover is very heavy .
9 .1 < Troubleshooti ng> 9 Troubleshooting This chapter gives helpful information on what to do if you encounter a problem. This chapter includes: • Tip s for avoiding p aper jams • Clearing.
9 .2 < Troubleshooti ng> 4 Align the tray with the slot, and slide it into the machine. 5 Press the top cover lever , completely ope n the top cover . 6 Hold the top cover and close it slowly and carefully , un til the cover is securely latched.
9 .3 < Troubleshooti ng> 10 Hold both edges of the rear cove r , and align it as shown in the following figure. Press the rear cover firmly until it clicks. Note If the rear cover is not completely closed, th e paper jam may occur . 11 Open and close the top cover firmly .
9 .4 < Troubleshooti ng> 4 Press the top cover lever , completely ope n the top cover . 5 Hold the top cover and close it slowly and carefully , un til the cover is securely latched. Note If the top cover is not completely closed, the machine will not operate.
9 .5 < Troubleshooti ng> 10 After removing the jammed paper , check for paper which may be jammed in other parts of the machine. 11 Slide the toner cartridge back into the machine. 12 Close the top cover firmly . The machine wil l resume printing.
9 .6 < Troubleshooti ng> 3 Hold the top cover and close it slowly and carefully , un til the cover is securely latched. Note If the top cover is not completely closed, the machine will not operate. Caution Be careful not to pinch your fingers , since the top cover is very heavy .
9 .7 < Troubleshooti ng> Underst anding display messages Messages appear on the Smart Panel program window or on the control panel display to indicate machine status or errors. Refer to the tables below to understand the messages meaning to correct the problem, if necessary .
9 .8 < Troubleshooti ng> Solving other problems The following chart lists some conditions that may occur and the recommended solutions. Follow the sugge sted solutions until the problem is corrected. If the problem persists, please call for service.
9 .9 < Troubleshooti ng> The machine selects print materials from the wrong paper source. The paper option that was selected in the machine properties may be incorrect. For many software applications, the paper source selection is found under the Paper tab within the printer properties.
9 .10 < Troubleshooti ng> Printing quality problems If the inside of the machine is dirty or paper has been loaded imp roperly , you may notice a reduction in print quality .
9 .11 < Troubleshooti ng> V ertical repetitive defects If marks repeatedly appear on the printed si de of the page at even intervals: • Clean the inside of the machine.
9 .12 < Troubleshooti ng> Loose toner • Clean the inside of the machine. Cont act a service representative to clean the inside of the machine. After cleaning the inside of the machine, if you still have the same problems, contact a service representative.
9 .13 < Troubleshooti ng> Scanning problems Condition Suggested solutions The scanner does not work. • Make sure that you place the original to be scanned face down on the scanner glass,. • There may not be e nough availabl e memory to hold the document you want to scan.

Open Unified Driver configurator and switch to the Printers tab in Printers configuration window to look at the list o f available printers.
9 .15 < Troubleshooti ng> The machine does not scan. • Check if a document is loaded into the machine. • Check if your machine is connected to the computer . Make sure if it i s connected properly if an I/O error is reported while scanning. • Check if the port is not busy .

Basic Printing 13 Printing to a file (PRN) Y ou will sometimes nee d to save the print data as a file for your purpose. T o create a file: 1 Check the Print to file box at the Print window. 2 Select the folder and assign a na me of the file and then click OK.
Basic Printing 14 Layout Tab The Layout tab provides options to adjust how the document appears on the printe d pa ge . Paper Orientation Paper Orientation allows you to select the direction in which information is printed on a page. • Portrait prints across the width of the page, letter style.
Basic Printing 15 Graphics Tab Use the following Gr aphic options to adjust the print quality for your specific printing needs. See “Printing a Document” on page 12 for more information on accessing printer properties. Click the Graphic tab to display the properties shown below .

Sharing the Printer Locally 22 4 Sharing the Printer Locally Y ou can connect the printer dire ctly to a selected computer , which is called “host computer , ” on the network. The following procedure is for Windows XP . For other Windows OS, refer to the correspon ding Wi ndows User's Guide or online help.
Scanning 23 5 Scanning Scanning with your machine lets you turn pictures and text into digital files on your computer . Then you can fax or e-m a il the files, display them on y our we b site or use them to create projects that you can print using Samsung SmarThru software or the WIA driver .
Scanning 24 4 Click Scan To . The Scan To menu bar appears on the SmarThru 4 w indo w. Scan To lets you use the following services: •Applicatio n Scanning an image and p lacing it in an i mage editor application, such as Paint or Adobe Photoshop. •E-mail Scanning an image and emailing it.
Scanning 25 Scanning Using the WIA Driver Y our machine also supports the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drive r for scanning images. WIA is one of the standard components provided by Microsoft ® Windows ® XP and works with digital cameras and scanners .

Using Your Printer in Linux 34 Scanning a Document Y ou can scan a document using th e Unified Driv er Configurator window. 1 Double-click the Unified Driv er Configurator on your desktop. 2 Click the button to switch to Scanners Configuration. 3 Select the scanner on the list.

40 Paper Set Paper Type to correspond to the paper loaded in the tray from which y ou w ant to print. This will let you get the best quality pr intout. If you load a dif ferent type of print material , select the corresponding paper type. Printing Multiple Pages on One Sheet of Paper Y ou can print more than one page on a single sheet of paper .
