Getting Started 5 Special T ext Throughout this manual, you’ll find text that is set apart from the rest. These are intended to point out import ant information, share quick method s for activating features, to define terms, and more.
6 Activating y our Phone If you purchased your phone at a Verizon Wireless sto re, it is activated and ready to us e. If you received a new phone by mail, it may need to be acti vated before you can use it. T o activate your phone, choose from the following: • Visit a Verizon Wireless stor e.
Getting Started 7 Batter y Co v er The battery is under a removable cover on the back of the phone. Remo ving the batter y cover Hold the device firm ly and lift the cover at the cover release latch. Installing the batter y cov er Align the cover and press it into place, making sure it snaps securely all the way around.
8 Installing the Batter y 1. Remove the batter y cover . For more infor mation, see “Removing the batter y cover” on page 7. 2. Insert the top end of the batter y into the phone housing, aligning the gold contact s on the battery with the gold contacts in the phone.
Getting Started 9 Charging the Batter y Y our phone includes a USB Cable and Charging Head to rapidly charge your phone from any 120/220 VAC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your phone for t he first time.
10 Non-Suppor ted Batteries Samsung handsets do not support the u se of non-approved batteries. Important! Using a non-supported battery may dama ge to your phone. When using a non-supported battery you will he ar a series of beeps and see a warning message: “ NON-SUPPORT ED BA TTER Y .

Getting Started 13 Locking and Un locking Y our phone offers two lock func tions, locking the phone, or locking the keypad. Note: Unless stated otherwise , instructions in this User Manual start with the phone unlocked, at the Home screen.
14 Locking and unloc king the k eypad By default, the external keypad locks automa tically when the backlight goes out, or you can lock it manually . Note: Use Keyguard Settings to cu stomize keypad locking. For more informa tion, see “Keyguard Settings” on page 140.
Getting Started 15 TTY Mode Y our phone is fully TTY -compatible, allowing you to connect a TTY device to the phone’ s headset jack. Before you can use your phone with a TTY device, you’ll nee d to enable TTY Mode. For mor e information about TTY s ettings, see “TTY Mode” on page 164.

34 Section 3: Call Fu nctions This section describes ho w to make, answer , or end a call. It also includes information about the Recent Calls log. Making Calls Y our phone offe rs multiple ways to make calls: • Enter the phone or speed dial number on the keypad, then press the Send Key .
Call Functions 35 Sending Calls to V oicemail Use one of these methods to ignore an incoming call and send it directly to voicemail: • Press th e Right Soft Key Ignore to send the call to voicemail. • T o ign ore the call and send a text message to the ca ller , press the Center Select Key TXT .
36 Recen t Calls When you place, miss, or receive a call, a record of the call is saved in Recent Calls. 1. From the Home screen, press the Center Sele ct Key to select MENU ➔ Recent Calls .

Call Functions 39 Fa ke C a l l Use Fake Call to have your phone ring with a fake call when you press the Voice Commands Key 4 times in a row with the phone open or closed.
40 Sound Aler t Mode When Sound Alert Mode is enab led, your phone uses sounds to alert you to notifications, rega rdless of other phone or call settings. T urning on Sound Alert Mode tem porarily replaces your previous sound settings, so you can switch between Sound Alert Mode and your fa vorite default settings easily .

42 Section 4: Understanding Y our Contacts This section allows you to ma nage your daily contacts by saving informa tion in Contacts. Contacts provides access to powerful features such as Groups, creating and sending vC ards, and viewing the phone number assigned to your phone by Verizon Wireless.

Understanding Y our Contacts 49 Adding Pauses or W aits Calls to automated syst ems can require you to press keys to navigate menus, or to enter a password or account number . Y ou can store these phone numbe rs, w ith special pause or wait characters, in a contact record to make dialing easier .

Entering T ext 61 Section 5: Entering T ext Y our phone provi des convenient ways to enter words, letters, punctuation, and numbers wh en you need to enter text. This section describes text input modes and ente ring characters or symbols, using the built-i n QWERTY keyboard or the ke ypad.
62 Choosing a T ext Entr y Mode While entering text, you can choose a text entr y mode. Tip : Y ou c an set a defaul t T ext Entry Mode. For more information, se e “Messaging Settings” on page 88. 1. While entering text, press t he Left Soft Key Entry Mode .
Entering T ext 63 Using XT9 XT9 is a predictiv e text entr y mode that recognizes common English words matching t he sequence of your key presses and inserts the most common w ord into your text. Tip : XT9 is available for Engli sh, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
64 Using Quic k T ext Quick T ext are pre-loaded phra ses that you can insert into your messages, or create your own phrases. 1. While entering text, press t he Left Soft Key Entry Mode ➔ Quick T ext . 2. Use the Directional Keys to highlight a phrase, then press the Center Select Key OK to insert it.
Entering T ext 65 Entering Smileys Enter Smileys by pressi ng the Function key , then the Smileys key , or by switching to Smileys text entr y mode. Using the Smileys key 1. While entering text, press the Function Key ➔ Smileys Key to display Smileys.
66 Entering T ext using XT9 XT9 is a predictive text entry mode that recognizes common words matching the sequence of your key presses and inserts the most common word into your tex t. XT9 Word requires only one key press per letter of the word, and is much faster than traditional t ext entry.
Entering T ext 67 Entering T ext using Abc/ABC/a bc Mode Abc mode is standard text entr y mode for mobile telephones, and is the default text entry m ode when using the external keypad. 1. T o s witch to Abc mode, press the Left Soft Ke y Entry Mode ➔ Abc .
68 Ente ring Sm ileys Use Smileys mode to ent er smiley symbols into a tex t field. 1. T o s witch to 123 mode, press the Left Soft Key Entry Mode ➔ Smileys . 2. The Smileys page displays. 3. Use the Directional Key to scroll thro ugh a Smileys page to highlight a Smiley , then press the Center Se lect Key OK to insert it into your text.

72 Creating and Sending T ext Messages Y our phone s upports T ext Messages, simple m essages containing text, which can be sent to other mobile phones, or to an Email address (also known as SMS). Note: This procedure uses the QWERTY keyboard and command keys.

Messaging 79 Viewing Messages by Contact When the Inbox View setting is set to Contact , all incoming and sent messages are stored in the Messa ges folder , grouped by contact (if the sende r/r ecipient of the message i s stored as a contact) or phone number , to provide a threaded view of the message exchange.
80 • Sort Alphabetic ally : List the message threads by contact name/number , rather than time. • Messaging Menu : Launch the Messaging Menu, for access to all messaging features .
