Getting Started 7 T ext Con ventions This manual provides condensed in formation about how to use your phone. T o make this possible, the fo llo wing terms and icons appear in place of ofte n-used procedural steps: select T ouch a menu item or screen item to la unch or save a menu item or screen field of interest.
8 Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable, stan dard Li-Ion battery. A T ravel Adapter is included for ch arging the battery. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time.
Getting Started 9 Batter y Cov er The battery is under a removable cover on the back of the phone. Remo ving the batter y cov e r 䊳 Pull up on the slot provided (1) while lifting the cover up (2) and away from the phon e (3).
10 Installing the Ba tter y 䊳 Insert the top end of the batter y , matching the gold contacts on the battery to those o n the inside of t he phone (1), then press the battery into the phone (2) until it slips into place. Remo ving t he Batter y Before removing the batt ery , turn the phone off, if necessary .
Getting Started 11 Char ging the Battery Y our phone comes with a convenie nt, light-weight T ravel Adapter for rapidly charging the batter y from any 120/220 VAC outlet. Note: Use only Samsung-approved charging devices and batteries. Samsung accessories are designed to maximize battery life.

The phone searches for a network signal, and the time, date, and day appear on the display . If you are ou tside your carrier’s coverage or ro aming area , the No Service icon appears at the top of the phone’ s display .
Getting Started 13 Locking and Unloc king Y our phone offers two lock functi ons, locking th e phone, or locking the screen. Lockin g and Unloc king the Phone Locking the phone prevents unautho rized access to information on the phone, but allow s dialing with t he Dialer .
14 Locking and Unlocking the Scr een By default, the phone locks automa tically when t he backlight goe s off, or you can lock it manually. Note: Y ou can choose to disable automatic screen locking. For more information, see see “Phone Settings” on page 88.
Getting Started 15 V oicemail Setting Up V oicemail Voicemail allows cal lers to lea ve voice messa ges, which can be retrieved any time. Note: Once your Voicemail account has been set up, you can use the Voicemail folder (under the Message menu) to view details of voice messages in your Voicemail box.

22 Command K eys Send Key • Press the Send key to answer an incoming call. • T o make a call, enter a number a nd press the Send key . • In Standby mode, press the Send key to display the Calls log. • In Standby mode, press the Send key twice to call the most rece nt number .

24 Understanding the Display 1. Status Bar : Displays icon s to indicate network status, battery power , signal strength, connection type, and more. For more information, see “Status Bar” on page 25. 2. Shortcut Bar : T ouch the arrow at the bottom of the S tatus Bar to display the Shortcut Bar .

26 Home Screen The Home screen is you r starting po int for using your phone. Y ou can customize home screens by placi ng widgets and changing wallpaper . The Home screen consists of three panels that extend beyond the display width to provide more space for adding widgets.
Understanding Y our Phone 27 Widgets and the Widg et Tray Widgets are links to a pplications, tools, or features, which can be placed in the Widget T ray, or on a Home screen. The Widget T ray , a t the left of the Home screen, provides quick access to widgets.
28 Placing Wid gets Use these meth ods to customize the Widget T ray and Home screens: • T ouch a widget in the Widget T ray to place it on a Home screen.

30 Entering T ext The r710 provides conven ient touch te xt entry with a phone-style 3x4 keypad or the virtual QWERTY keyboard. Entering T e xt Using the Vir tual QWERTY K eyboard Y our phone’ s virtual QWERTY keyb oard offers quick an d easy touch text input, similar to a computer k eyboard.
Understanding Y our Phone 31 Changing the T ext Entr y Mode While enteri ng text with the QW ERTY keybo ard, choose te xt entry modes to make text entr y easier: •A b c : Enter text characters. While enteri ng text, touch Caps once to switch between Abc and ABC mod es, or touch Caps twice qu ickly to lock in AB C mod e until you touch Caps again.
32 Entering T ext with the 3X4 K eypad The 3x4 Keypad provides standard text entry for phone keypads. Accessing the 3x4 Keypad The 3x4 Keypad is the default for most text entry fields. The 3x4 Keypad always displays in portrait mode. 䊳 With the cursor in a text fi eld, touch the pull-down menu at the top right of the screen and choose 3X4Keypad .
Understanding Y our Phone 33 Using T9 Mode T9 ® Word is a predicti ve text input mode that recognizes common words matching the seque nce of your key to uc hes. T9 Word is availabl e on your phone’ s 3x4 Keypad, requires only one key press per letter and is much faster tha n traditiona l phone tex t entry .
34 Section 3: Call Functions This section pro vides procedures for making and answering calls. This section also descri bes features, such as call logs and call timers, that help you ma ke calls an d manage your call time. Making a Call 1. From a Home screen, touch Dialer .
Call Functions 35 Dial ing Emer gency Call s Emergency speed dials 911, *911 and #911 are pre-defined in your phone. Note: Y ou can change the pre-defined emergency numbers in your phone’ s settings. For more information, see see “Call Settings” on page 87.
36 Thr ee-W ay Calling Set up a three-way call by merging two call s together . 1. From the Home screen, touch Dialer . 2. Enter the number for the first party , then press . 3. When connected, touch Dialer to place the first party on hold. 4. Enter the second party’ s phone number and press to set up the three-way call.
Call Functions 37 Speed Dia ling Speed dials are 1- or 2-digit sho rtcuts you assign to Favorite contacts, to allo w you to quickly call the c ontact. For more information abou t assigning Favorites, see “Favorites” on page 47. 1. From a Home screen, touch Dialer .
38 Answ ering a Call When you receive a call, t he phone displays informa tion about the call, including the name (if the num ber is stored in Contacts) and number . Tip: If you assign pictures to contacts, the picture appears in the display when you receive a call from the contact.

40 Calls The Calls log cont ains records for Ou tgoing, Incomin g, and Missed calls. Y ou can access this information for future reference, to return calls, and to a dd new Contacts. 䊳 From a Home screen, pres s . – or – T ouch Menu ➔ Menu 2 ➔ Calls .
Call Functions 41 Data Calls The Data Calls displays the last 90 data calls. 䊳 From a Home screen, press , then select Data from the menu at the top right of the screen. Call Timer View the duration of calls. Note: Call Timer is not for billing purposes.
42 Section 4: Understanding Y our Contacts Up to 2000 entries can be stored in Contacts. Each entry can have up to five associated pho ne numbers and one e- mail address. Each phone number can be up to 32 digits in length, including pauses, and associated names can be up to 32 characters in length.
Understanding Y our Contacts 43 Menu Method 1. From a Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ New Contact . 2. T ouch the Name field, then enter the contact’s name using the 3x4 Keypad or the QWERTY keypad. T ouch Done to return to the Contacts record. 3. Continue touching fiel ds to enter contact information, if needed.
44 Finding a Contact Shortcut Method If you’ve s tored a named ent ry in Contacts, the S earch option in the Contacts screen lets you find it quickly . 1. From a Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. Ta p t h e T ap here to find field, then en ter the first few letter s of the contact’ s name with the 3x4 Keypad.

46 Assigning a Ring tone to a Contact When you assign a rington e to a Contacts entry , the phone plays that ringtone instead of the Voice Calls ring tone for incoming calls from the Contact. 1. From a Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. Find and select the co ntact, then touch Edit .

Y ou can also speed dial the Favorite using the 1- or 2-digit F avorite number . Note: T o use the speed dial feature for Favorites, set the Speed Dial setting to On .
48 Groups Groups let you easily send messages to multiple , selected Contacts. Y ou can also use Groups to find Co ntact entries and to add/remove Contacts names in a Group or to create or rename a Group. Addi ng Cont acts to a Grou p The Add optio n lets you add on e or more contacts to a Group.

Messages 55 Receiv e Messa ges When you receive a message, the ringer sound s (unless sounds are disabled) and a New Message alert displays, with the d ate and time of the messa ge and thes e options: • Vi ew N ow : Open the message. • View Later : Save the message to your Inbox, where y ou can view it later .

Camera-Camcorder 67 Camcorder Options Mode : Indicates the current mo de. T ouch to change to Camcorder mode. Recording Mode : Choose a shooting mode, from: • Normal : Record a video of any size. • Vi de o M sg : Record a video at 176x144, suitable for attaching to a Video message.
68 Night Shot : Not configurable for videos. Time r : Set a delay between pre ssing the Came ra key and starting recording. Brightness : Set the brightness of pictures.

Multimedia 73 My Videos Use My Videos to view , edit and ma nage videos stored on your phone or optional instal led memory card. Tip: Y our phone can play MP4 videos with a maximum resolution of 320x240. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Main Menu 2 ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Videos .

Multimedia 75 My Ringtones Use My Ringtones to assign ringtones for in coming calls, as a ringtone for a contact, or as alert tones. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Main Menu 2 ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Ringtones . 2. T ouch Set as to set a ringtone as: • Ringtone : The default ringtone for incoming calls.
76 My Sounds Use My Sounds to assign sounds as ri ngtones for incoming calls, as a ringtone for a c ontact, or as al er t tones. Y ou can also create new sounds. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Main Menu 2 ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Sounds . 2. T ouch Record New to create a new sound.

T ools 81 Alar m Clock Alarm Clock le ts you set up to four alarms to sound once, or to recur daily at specifi c times. Once set, an alarm is easy to change or turn off completely. 䊳 From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Main Menu 1 ➔ Alarm . Note: The alarm doesn’t function when the phone is turned off.
82 Stopwa tch Stopwatch provides a tim er that yo u can use to record event times and/or to record lap times. 䊳 From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Main M enu 2 ➔ Stopwatch . Tip: The Stopwatch feature can also be accessed through the T ools menu. Timer Timer provides a coun t down timer settable for a count lasting from 1 second to 24 hours.
