4 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section allows you to qu ickly start using your Samsung SCH-R530 phone by installing the SIM and microSD cards, installing and charging the batter y , activating your service, and setting up your voicemail account.

6 Setting Up Y our Phone Before using your phone, you need to install the SIM card, the microSD™ card, and the ba tter y into their respective internal slots and compartment. Important! Before removing or rep lacing the battery cover , make sure the phone is swit ched off.
Getting Started 7 Installing the batter y cover Align the cover (1) and press it firmly into place (2), making sure it snaps into pl ace at the corners.
8 4. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as shown) until the card locks into place. Note: If the SIM card is not inserted cor rectly , the phone cannot make a network connection. Once the SIM card is inserted, do not remove it. If your SIM card is ever separated from the device or damaged, your device will not function.

Getting Started 11 Batter y Y our phone is pow ered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y . A W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) is includ ed with the phone, for charging the battery . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your phone for t he first time.
12 Remo vi ng the Batter y 1. Remove the batter y cover . ( See “Removing the ba ttery cover” on page 6.) 2. Lift the batter y up by the slot provided (1). 3. Lift the batter y up and out of the phone (2). Chargi ng the Batter y Y our phone i s powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery.
Getting Started 13 1. Insert the USB cable into the device’ s Charger/ Accessory jack a t the bottom of the device. Note: This illustration di splays both the correct and incorr ect orientation for connecting the USB cable.
14 4. When charging is finished, first unplug the charger’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disconnect the USB cable connector from the device. Important! If your handset has a touch screen display , please note that a touch screen r esponds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-m etallic stylus.
Getting Started 15 Unlockin g Y our Phone 1. If needed, press Press Home to wake the screen. 2. If there are no Notification alerts on your phone, swipe the screen to unlock it.
16 TTY Mode Y our phone is fully TTY -compatible, allowing you to connect a TTY device to the phone’ s head set jack. Before you can use your phone with a TTY device, you’ll need to enable TTY Mode. For more informati on, refer to “Other call se ttings” on pa ge 65.
Getting Started 17 Y our Goog le™ Account Y our new phone uses yo ur Google account to ful ly utilize its Android features, includ ing Gmail, Google Maps, Google T alk, and the Google™ Play . When you turn on your phone for the first time, you should set up a connection with your existing Google account, or create a new Google account.
18 Creating a Samsung Account An active Samsung account is required to use applications such as AllShare Play and Media Hub. 1. From the Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Settings . The Settings screen appears in the display . 2. Under Accounts, touch Add account .
Getting Started 19 Securing Y our Phone By default, the phone locks automa tically when the screen times out, or you can lock it manually . Y ou can unlock the phone using one of the default Unlock screens, or for increased security , use a personal screen unlock pattern, a Personal Identification Number (PIN), or a password.

26 Motions Y our phone r ecognizes motion, to allow you to nav igate and access features by moving the phone in specific pa tterns. T o use motions to control your phone, enable the Motion settings. (For more information, see “Motion” on page 177.

30 Quick Settings M enu Use Quick Settings toggles at the top of Notifi cations to control popular settings. Slid e your finger right and left across the Quick Settings menu to see all of the toggles. • Wi-Fi : T urn Wi-Fi On or Off. For more informa tion about using Wi-Fi, se e “Wi-F i” on page 11 9.
Understanding Y our Phone 31 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your phone. Note: Unless stated otherw ise, instructions in this User Manual start with the phone unlocked, at the Home screen. All screen images in this manual are simula ted.
32 Status Bar Icons The Status B ar shows netw ork and battery sta tus and other details. Airplane Mode Act ive : All wireless communications are disabled. See “Airplane mode” on pa ge 137. USB Connected : The phone is connected to a computer using a USB cable.

Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Home panel, plus panels that extend beyond the display width to provide m ore space for adding shortcuts, widgets and folders.

38 Customizing the Apps Screens Choosing a view By default, app icons appear in Grid view. Y ou can change the view to list view. 1. Press the Home key , then touch Apps. 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Vie w t y pe . 3. Choose an option: • Customiza ble Grid : The default view , which allo ws you to touch and hold on app s to move them from screen to screen.

40 Entering T ext Using Samsung Keybo ar d The Samsung keyboard is a cust om virtual QWERTY keyboard, featuring optiona l XT9 predictive text. Input characters by touching t he on-s creen keys with your finger , or use speech recognition.
Understanding Y our Phone 41 Using Google voice typing Enter text by speaking. Google voice typing recogn izes your speech and enters text for you. Note: Enable Google voice typing in Language and input settings, and Vo ice input in the Samsung keyboard settings , to have the input method icon appear o n the Status Bar .
42 Section 3: Accounts an d Contacts Accounts Y our phone pro vides the abilit y to synchronize informa tion, from a variety of accounts, including Email, Facebook, Google, and your Samsung account. Depending on the account, you can choose to synchronize your c alendar , contacts, and other types of content.
Accounts and Contac ts 43 Controll ing Synchronization Y ou can choose to have your phone automatically synchronize with your acco unts, or manually synchronize each account when you want to check messages. Y ou may also choose to lim it automatic or background synchronization to extend battery life.

Accounts and Contac ts 51 Sending Namecards Y ou can send a contact entry as a namecard using a Bluetooth connection to another device, or as an attachment to a Gmail or Email message. Important! Not all Bluetooth devices w ill ac cept conta cts, and not all devices support t ransfers of multiple contacts.
52 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster , or to quickly call or send messages to group members. Y our pho ne comes with pre-loaded groups you can use to add your contac ts. Adding a New Group 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ Groups .

54 Speed Dials Speed dials are 1-, 2-, or 3-digit shortcuts (1 to 100) you assign to contacts, to allo w you to quickly call the contact. For more information about calling using speed dials, see “Making Calls using Speed Dials” on page 55. Note: Speed dial 1 is reserved for Voicemail, and cannot be assigned.
Calling 55 Section 4: Calling Making Calls Y our phone offers multi ple ways to make calls: • Use the touch screen Phone Keypad to enter the phone number or speed d ial. • Call a contact from Contacts . • Call a contact from Fav or i te s . • Return a call, or call a recent caller , from Recent .
56 Making Calls from Contacts A contact is an entr y that you have created to s tore the name, numbers, and other info rm ation for people or groups of interest. For more informati on, refer to “Contact s” on page 45. 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts .
Calling 57 Making Calls using Fa v orites Favorites are contacts that yo u designate as favorites by starring them. (For more information about creating favorites, see “Fav orites ” on page 51.) 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone . 2. T ouch Fav o ri te s to display favorites.
58 Ans wering Calls Y ou can answer incoming calls when the phone is locked or unlocked. T ouch and drag the Answer icon to the right. Tip : T o silence t he ringtone for an incoming call, press the Vol u m e key Up or Down.
Calling 59 Options During a Call While in a call, you can use these fea tures: • Add call : Display t he Dialer to set up a multi -party call. • Keypad : Display a keypad to enter numbers. • End call : End the phone call. • Speaker : Enable or disable speakerphone.
60 Sending Messages using R ec ent calls 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Recent . 2. Swipe your finger from righ t to left across the call. – or – For a contac t call, touch the picture ID icon, then touch to create a messa ge to the number .

62 Set reject messa ges Create and manage text me ssages to send to callers when you select Reject call with message in the Incoming call screen. 1. From the Call Settings screen, touch Set reject messages . 2. Manage messages: • T o create new messages, touch Create , then follow the prompts.

Calling 65 V oicemail Configure options for voicemail. From the Call Settings screen, under Voi ce ma il , the following options are available: • Voicemail service : By default, your phone u ses your wireless service provider’ s vo icemail service.
66 Section 5: Messaging This section desc ribes how to send and receive messages, and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone s upports these types of messages : • T ext messages : Send and receive simple messag es containing text to other mobi le phones or email addr esses (also know n as SMS).
Messaging 67 – Add text : Select text from S Me mo, Calendar , Location, Contacts or T ext templates to add. – Preview : View the message and attachments before sending. – Add to Contacts : If the recipients are not saved in Contacts, save the info as a new contact, or update an existing contact.
68 – Draft messages : Messages you have composed and saved for later reuse and/or to be sent to a recipie nt. – Locked messages : Messages you have locked to protect them from accidental deleti on. – Spam messages : Messages received from num bers you have registered as spam senders.
Messaging 69 – T ext templates : T ext templates are phrases that you can add to your messages. Use a pre-loaded text template, or creat e your own. • T ext message (SMS) se ttings : – Delivery r eports : When enabled, you receive a delivery report for text messages you send.
70 – Vib r at e : Configure vibration fo r Emergency Alerts. – Alert sound : When enabled, a sound plays for emergency alerts. – Alert reminder : Choose whether , and at what interval, your phone plays a sound to notify you of a Emergency Alert after the Emergency Alert tone has stopped.
