6 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section explains how to st art using your ph one by first configuring your hardware, acti vating your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessa ry to instal l both the batter y and SIM into their cor responding internal comp artments.
Getting Started 7 Important! The plug -in SIM c ard info rm ation and its contacts can be easily damaged by scr atching or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. Keep al l SIM cards out of r each of small children. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as shown) unt il the card locks into place.
8 Installing the Memor y Card 1. Remove the batter y . Use your thumbnail or a sharp object to lift the batter y up (1) and then away from the device (2). 2. Push the microSD card into the slot unt il it clicks (as shown). • Make sure the microS D’ s gold contact pi ns face downward and the card is securely ins erted.
Getting Started 9 Installing the Batter y 1. Insert the battery i nto the opening on the back of the phone, making sure the connectors align (1). 2. Gently press down to secur e the batter y (2). Installing the Back Co ver 1. Place the battery co ver onto the back of the phone (1) and press down (2).
10 2. Press along the edge of the back cover (3) until you have a secure seal. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone. Charging a Batter y Y our device is powered by a rechar geable Li-ion battery . The T ra vel Charger that is used to charge the batter y , is inc luded with your device.
Getting Started 11 1. Plug the flat end of the T ravel Charger into the Power/ Accessory Interface connecto r and the other end into a standard AC wall out let. 2. When charging is finished, remove the flat end from the interface connector jack on the phone.
12 Note: The display language is preset to English at the factor y . T o change the langua ge, use the Language menu. For more informa tion, refer to “Changing Y our Settings” on page 107. 3. T o s witch off the phone, press and hold , until the Device opti ons screen displays.
Getting Started 13 4. At the Use Goog le location screen, a blue checkmark appears n ext to the text t hat explain s that you all ow Google’ s location service to collect a nonymous locatio n data from your phone. If you disagree, tap the checkmark to remove it.
14 Retrie ving your Google Account Pas swor d A Google account password is r equired for Google applications. If you misplace or forget your Google Account password, follo w these instructions to retr ieve it: 1. From your computer , use an Internet browser to navigate to http://google.
Getting Started 15 1. With the phone turned off, press the Power key and Volume Up/Down keys at the same time until the phone switches on. 2. Once the Samsung Galaxy S II lo go appears, releas e the Power key while continuing to press t he Volume Up/Down keys.
16 T roubleshooting If your device has fatal errors, hangs up, or fr eezes, you may need to reset the device to regain fun ctionality . If your device is frozen and unrespons ive, press and hold the Power/Lock Key for 8 to 10 seconds. For more informati on, refer to “Android Syst em Recover y” on page 14.

Understanding Y our Phone 25 AT & T N a v i g a t o r : A T&T Navigator provides you with access to real-time GPS-drive n applicatio ns. These programs not only allow you to achieve turn-by-turn navigation, but also acce ss local searches based on a variety of categ ory para meters.
26 Email : Email enables you to review and creat e email using various email services. Y ou can also receive text message alerts when you receive an important email. For more information, re fer to “Using Email” on pa ge 102. This icon only displays in the Applications menu when Email has been remov ed as a Home screen shortcut.
Understanding Y our Phone 27 Latitude : With Google Latitude, you can see the location of all of your friends on a map or on a list. Y ou can also share or hide yo ur location.

Qik Lite : Allows you to record and share live video from your device with your friends, family and your favorite social networks.
30 T ask manager : The T ask manager application provides information about the processes and program s running on your phone, as well as the memory sta tus. It can also be used to terminate proces ses and applications. F or more info rmation, refer to “T ask Manager” on page 179.

Understanding Y our Phone 33 Locking and Unloc king the Phone T o unlock your phone: 1. Press the lock button lo cated on the upper right side of your phone. 2. The lock screen will display with Swipe screen to unlock displayed at the bottom of the screen.

The first Application Menu will be displayed. 2. Sweep the screen left or right to access the other three menus.

36 4. Scroll through the list and l ocate your desired application. 5. T ouch and hold th e application icon. This crea tes an immediate shortcut o f the se lected icon and closes the Applica tions tab. 6. While still holding the on-scr een icon, position it on the current page.
Understanding Y our Phone 37 8. T ouch and hold the on-screen icon, then dra g it over the primary shortcut that you want to replace. The new primary shortcut then appear s at the bott om of the screen. The old primar y shortcut will return to the menu.

Understanding Y our Phone 39 Mo v ing Home Screens Y our phone comes with seven Home screens. Y ou can arrange the screens in any order that you want. T o move a Home s creen, follow these steps: 1. Press to activate the main Ho me screen. 2. Press and tap Edit .
40 4. Drag it to the trash can located at the bottom of the screen. 5. If there are items on the Home screen tha t you want to delete, the Home screen has items. Delete? prompt is displayed. 6. Ta p Ye s to remove the page, otherwise , tap No . 7. Press to return to the main Home screen.

42 Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD (SD) or mi croSDHC card to expand available memory space. This se cure digital card enables you to exchange images, music, and da ta between SD-compatible devi ces. This section a ddresses the features and options of your device’ s SD functionality .
Understanding Y our Phone 43 Unmounting the SD card Unmounti ng the SD ca rd preven t s corruption and damage to the SD card while removing it fr om the slot. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Setting s ➔ Storage . 2. Scroll to the bottom of the display and ta p Unmount SD card .

46 9. T o make a call using Speed Dial , tap ➔ Keypad and from the Dialer , touch and hold the speed dial number . Making a Call from the Addr ess Book Y ou can store phone num bers th at you use regularly on the SIM card or in the phone’ s memory .
Call Functions 47 Note: Y ou can ans wer a call while using the Address Book or other menu feature. After endi ng the call, the phone returns to the previously active function screen. Dialing Options From the Home sc reen and Application menus, you have the option to access the Dialer and initiate a call by ta pping ➔ Keypad .
48 Note: If there is a voicemail sent by th e same number , associated icons are displayed and can then be selected . 2. The Call log is displayed. Miss ed calls are identified by the icon next to the number . Calling Bac k a Missed Call T o call back a missed call number: 1.
Call Functions 49 4. Enter information int o the various fields using the keypad. 5. T ap at the top of the disp lay to select where you want the contact sa ved. It is saved to the Phone by default. 6. Ta p Phone , SIM , or account name. 7. T a p when you are finished to save the contact.
50 Adding a Call to the R eject List 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Logs . A list of recent calls is displayed. 2. T ouch and hold the call you want to add to the Reject List. 3. Ta p Add to reject list . Future calls from this number will be rejected and sent to your voicemail.
Call Functions 51 • Speaker : routes the phone’ s audio through either th e speaker or through the earpiece . – Ta p Speaker to route the audio throug h the speaker . (Y ou can adjust the speaker volume usin g the volume keys.) A green li ne will appear un der the Speaker button.
52 Switching Betw een Calls When you have an active call and a call on hold, you may switch between the two calls, changing the one on hol d to active and placing the other on hold.
Call Functions 53 2. T a p and slide to the right to answer the next call. 3. Ta p Put "Number" on hold to put the first call on hold. 4. Join the first two callers into a single multi- party call by tapp ing Merge . 5. T o temporarily lea ve the conference call, tap Hold .
54 Switching off the Microphone (Mute) Y ou can temporarily s witch your phone’ s microphone o ff, so that the other person cannot hear y ou. Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not wan t the person o n the phone to he ar you.
Entering T ext 55 Section 4: Entering T e xt This section describes ho w to select the desi red text input method when entering charac ters into your phone. This section also describes the predic tive text entr y system tha t reduces the amount of key strokes associa ted with entering text.
56 Changing the T e xt Input Mode - K eypad There are two main keypa d layout keys that will change the on-screen keys within the QWERTY keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: Sym and Abc . Note: When i n Abc mode, the Sym button will appear . When in Sym mode, the Abc / ABC / abc button will appear .
Entering T ext 57 Using Symbol/Numeric Mode Use Symbol/Numeric Mode to add numbers, symbol s, or emoticons. 1. Rotate your phone counterclockwise to a Landscape orientation. 2. 70 Editing a Caller Group T o edit a Group entr y , there mu st be at least one member as part of the selected group. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Contacts ➔ Groups . 2. T ap a group entry. 3. Press ➔ Edit . 4. Make modifications to the Group name or Group ringtone fields.

72 Deleting Contacts from the SIM card 1. From the Home screen, tap Contacts ➔ ➔ SIM Management . 2. Ta p Delete Contac ts from SIM . The phone then displays a list of your cur rent phone contacts. 3. T ap the contacts to place a checkmark ad jacent t o those entries you wish to hav e copied to the SIM card.

Music Player The Music Player is an applicatio n that can play music files. The music player supports files with extensions AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, WMA, 3GP , MP4, and M4A.
76 • Add to quick list : adds the current music file to the Quick list. • Via Bluetooth : scans for devices and pairs w ith a Bluetooth headset. •S h a r e m u s i c v i a : allows you to share your music by using AllShare, Bluetooth, Emai l, Gmail, Messaging, or Wi-F i Direct.
Multimedia 77 Using Playlists Playlists are used to as sign songs to a list of preferr ed media which can then be grouped into a list for later playback.
78 Google Play Music With Google Play Music, you can play music that you have added to your music file as well as an y music you copied from your PC. While offline, yo u can listen to music you ha ve copied from your PC. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Play Music .
Multimedia 79 5. When the Live TV main pa ge displays, follow the on- screen instructions to watch TV . Qik Lite Qik Lite is a mobile video sharing service that lets you record and share experiences with your friends, family, and your favorite social networks.

From the Home screen, tap ➔ Play Movies . 2. Sign on to your Google account if you have not already done so.

Multimedia 83 Using the Camera T aking Photos T aking pictures with your devi ce’ s built- in camera is as simple as choosing a subject, pointing the camera, then pressing the camera key . Note: When taking a photo in direct su nlight or in bright conditions, shadows may a ppear on the photo.
84 T ap each side of the picture and swipe outward or inward to zoom in or out. Y ou can magnify the picture up to x4. 8. Press to return to the viewfinder . Camera Options Options are represented by icon s across both sides of the screen. Camera / Camcorder Mode : allows you to take a photo in various modes.

The guide box lets you vie w the area where the second part of the panoramic picture sh ould fall within. • Action shot : detects action and create s a panorama of the moving object.
86 ISO : ISO determines how se nsitive the light meter is on your digital camera. Choose from Auto, 100, 200, 400, or 800. Use a lower ISO number to make your camera less sensitive to light, a higher ISO number to tak e photos with less light, or Auto to let the camera automatically adjust the IS O for each of your shots.
