4 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section allows you to qu ickly start using your Samsung GALAXY S III phone by insta lling and charging the battery , activating your ser vice, and setting up your voicemail account. 6 R emo ving the batter y co v er 1. Locate the cover r emoval opening (1). 2. Place your fingernail in th e opening and pr y the cover away from the device (2). Caution! Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively . Doing so may damage the cover .
Getting Started 7 Batter y Y our phone is pow ered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y . A W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) is includ ed with the phone, for charging the battery . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your phone for t he first time.
8 Insta lling the Ba ttery 1. Remove the batter y cover . For more informati on, refer to “Removing the ba ttery cover” on page 6. 2. Slide the battery into the co mpartment (1) so that the tabs on the end align with th e slots at the bottom of the phone, making sure the connectors align.
Getting Started 9 Char ging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li-ion batter y . A wall charger , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further de tails.
10 2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head. 3. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. The device turns on with the screen locked and indicates both its charge stat e and percent of charge.
Getting Started 11 Installing a Memor y Car d Y our device l ets you install an (optional) microSD (SD) or microSDHC memory card to expand a vailable memor y to store images, videos, mus ic, applications, and data. 1. Remove the batter y cover .

14 Vo i c e m a i l All unanswered calls t o your phone are sent to voicemail, even if your phone is turned off, so you’ll want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as you activate your phone. Setting up V oicemail 1. Press Home , then touch Phone ; then touch and hold .

22 Status Bar Icons The Status bar shows net work and battery status and other details. Airplane Mode Act ive : All wireless communications are disabled. See “Airplane mode” on pa ge 129. USB Connected : The phone is connected to a computer using a USB cable.

42 Entering T e xt Using Handwriting Y ou can enter text simply by using your finger to handwrite letters on your screen. 1. T ouch and hold on the keyboard , and then touch . 2. Use your finger tip to write out each character . Y ou can print or use cursive.

44 Section 3: Accounts an d Contacts Accounts Y our phone pro vides the abilit y to synchronize informa tion, from a variety of accounts, including Email, Facebook, Google, and your Samsung account. Depending on the account, you can choose to synchronize your c alendar , contacts, and other types of content.

Y ou may also choose to lim it automatic or background synchronization to extend battery life.

Accounts and Contac ts 53 Sending Namecards Y ou can send a contact entry as a namecard using a Bluetooth connection to another device, or as an attachment to a Gmail or Email message. Important! Not all Bluetooth devices w ill ac cept conta cts, and not all devices support t ransfers of multiple contacts.
54 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster , or to quickly call or send messages to group members. Y our pho ne comes with pre-loaded groups you can use to add your contac ts. Adding a New Group 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ Groups .

T ouch contact(s) to mark them for addition, or tou ch Select al l to mark all contacts. When selected, a check mark appe ars in the check box.
56 Speed Dials Speed dials are 1-, 2-, or 3-digit shortcuts (1 to 100) you assign to contacts, to allo w you to quickly call the contact. For more information about calling using speed dials, see “Making Calls using Speed Dials” on page 57. Note: Speed dial 1 is reserved for Voicemail, and cannot be assigned.
Calling 57 Section 4: Calling Making Calls Y our phone offers multi ple ways to make calls: • Use the touch screen Phone Keypad to enter the phone number or speed d ial. • Call a contact from Contacts . • Call a contact from Fav or i te s . • Return a call, or call a recent caller , from Logs .
58 Making Calls using S V oice Place a call by speaking the name or number . 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone . then touch SV o i c e . 2. The firs t time yo u access S Voi ce, foll ow the prom pts to confirm the license a greement, and view informat ion about S Voice.
Calling 59 Multi-par ty Calling Use multi-party call feat ures to set up a call betwe en multiple callers, such as for a confere nce call. 1. Establish the first call, by ans wering an incoming call or making a call. 2. T ouch Add call . The first call is placed on hold.
60 Sending Calls to V oicemail When your phone alerts you to an incoming call, you can reject the call to send the caller to voice mail, o r reject the call and send a message to the caller . Rejecting a call T ouch and drag the Reject icon to the left.
Calling 61 Options During a Call While in a call, you can use these fea tures: • Noise reduction : Enable or dis able nois e reduction, to impr ove call audio quality in noisy environments. • Extra volume : Enable or disable increased volu me in the earpiece.
62 Ending a Call To u c h . Logs When you place, answer , or miss a call, a record of the call is saved in the call Logs. Accessing Logs From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Logs to display recent calls. Making Calls using Logs 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone .
Calling 63 Managing Logs Deleting re cords 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Logs . 2. While viewing the ca lls, touch Menu , and then touch Delete . 3. T ouc h call record s to mark them for d eletion, or touch Select al l . A check indicates marked records.
64 Call Settings Configure settings for calling with your phone. T o access Cal l settings, from the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Menu ➔ Call Settings . Call res triction Create and manage a lis t of phone numbers, to have your phone au tomatically r estrict calls you receive from those numbers.
Calling 65 Ringtones and keypad tones Select incoming call rington e an d vibration, and enable or disable call vibration and keypad tones. From the Call Settings screen, touch Ringtones and keypad tones . The following options are a vailable: • Device ringtone : Select the ringtone the phone plays to alert you of incoming calls.
66 Answ ering/ending calls Manage settings for answ ering an d ending calls. 1. From the Call Settings screen, touch Call answering/ ending . The following options are a vailable: • Answering key : Answer an incoming ca ll by pressing Home . • Answer calls usi ng voice : Answer calls using the S V oice wake-up command .
Calling 67 My call sound Select a sound profile for use during calls. 1. Fro m th e Call Setting s screen, touch My call sound . 2. T ouch My call sound settings . Select an option: Off (sound set with the Volume key), Soft sound , Clear sound , Optimized for left ea r , or Optimized for right ear .
68 V oicemail Configure options for voicemail. From the Call Settings screen , under Voi c e ma i l , the following options are a vailable: • Voicemail service : By default, your phone use s your wireless service provider’ s voicemail service.
Messaging 69 Section 5: Messaging This section describes ho w to send and receive messa ges, and other features as sociated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone supports these types of messa ges: • T ext messages : Send and receive simp le messages contain ing text to other mobile phones or email addresses (also known as SMS).

72 – Roaming auto-retri eve : When this option is enabled, MMS messages download and display automatically when roaming. When this option is disabled, the ph one prompts you to download new MMS m essages. – MMS alert : Receive an alert you when a message changes mode to MMS.
Messaging 73 Emergency aler ts This device is des igned to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts from the Commercial Mobile Alert Ser vice (CMAS). Emergency Alerts are geographically-targeted, and alert customers of imminent threa ts to their safety with in their area.
