Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er . Do not bend or twist the back cover ex cessively . D oing so may damage the co ver . 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards.
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the SIM or USIM car d. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable.
Getting star ted 13 Charg ing with the charger Plug the small end of the charger int o the multipur pose jack of the device , and plug the large end of the charger int o an electr ic socket. Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device .
Getting star ted 14 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket. Do not remov e the batter y before r emoving the charger . This may damage the device .
Getting star ted 15 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 16 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 17 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 18 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 20 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 25 Quick setting panel F rom the quick setting panel, you can view y our device ’ s curren t settings. Drag do wn from the status bar , tap to open the quick setting panel, and then use the f ollowing options: • Wi - Fi : Activate or deactivate the Wi-F i featur e.
Basics 26 Rearranging it ems Adding an applica tion icon On the Home screen, tap Apps , tap and hold an application icon, and then drag it in to a panel preview .
Basics 27 Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen. Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen.
Basics 28 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Applications scr een, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een , and then tick Multiple widgets .
Basics 29 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 30 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 31 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 32 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone .
Basics 33 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 93) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 34 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 35 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 36 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 37 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 38 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
39 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 40 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 41 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 42 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the lar ge circle, or press and hold the headset butt on. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 43 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 44 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 45 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 46 Moving con tac ts Moving con tac ts to Google T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google . Contacts mov ed to Google Contacts appear with in the contacts list. Moving con tac ts to Samsung T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Samsung .
Communication 47 F av ourite con tac ts T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Add t o fav ourites : Add c ontacts to favourites . • Remov e from fav ourites : Remove c ontacts from favourit es.
Communication 48 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 49 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled message . Set a time and date, and then tap OK . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 50 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 51 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 52 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter recipients , a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 53 T alk Use this application to cha t with others via Google T alk. T ap T alk on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Public pr ofile T ap the accoun t ID at the top of the friends list to change the a vailability status, image , or status message.
Communication 54 Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice. T ap Google+ on the Applications screen.
55 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 56 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 57 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 58 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
59 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 60 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 61 Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission. • Do not take photos or videos where legally pr ohibited. • Do not take photos or videos in places wher e you may viola te other people ’ s privacy .
Media 62 • Con tinuous shot : T ake a series of photos of moving subjects. • Sound & shot : Use this to take a phot o with sound. T ap t o take a photo. The device rec ords a few seconds of audio after taking a photo . While taking photos in this mode, sound is rec orded by the internal microphone .
Media 63 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap . T o stop r ecording, tap . While rec ording , use the following actions: • T o change the f ocus, tap where you w ant to f ocus. • T o captur e an image from the video while r ecording , tap .
Media 64 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution.
Media 65 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap → to configur e settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are a vailable in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.
Media 66 • Exposure value : Change the exposure value . This determines how much light the camera ’ s sensor r eceives . F or low-light situations , use a higher exposure. • Guidelines : Display viewfinder guides to help c omposition when selecting subjec ts.
Media 67 V iewing images Launching Galler y displays a vailable folders. When another application, such as Email , sav es an image, the Download folder is aut omatically creat ed to contain the image. Likewise , capturing a screenshot automatically cr eates the Screenshots folder .
Media 68 • Photo note : Use this to write a not e on the back of the image. T ap to edit the note . • Cop y to clipboard : Cop y to clipboard . • Print : Print the image via a USB or Wi-F i connection. The device is only compatible with some Samsung printers.
Media 69 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap to send them to others. • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or share it via social network services.
Media 70 V ideo Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device's software. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 71 Y ou T ube Use this application to w atch videos fr om the Y ou T ube website . T ap Y ou T ube on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . W atching videos T ap , and then enter a keyword.
Media 72 F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio . T o listen to the F M radio, y ou must connec t a headset, which ser ves as the radio an tenna. T ap FM Radio on the Applications screen. Listening to the F M radio Plug a headset into the devic e befor e launching the FM radio .
Media 73 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return to the F M radio screen.

77 Utilities Memo Use this application to r ecord impor tant inf ormation to sav e and view at a later date . T ap Memo on the Applications screen. C omposing memos T ap , enter a memo , and then tap S ave . T o change the backgr ound colour , tap → Colour .
Utilities 78 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T ap and use the follo wing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour . • Lock : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it.
Utilities 79 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 80 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others at the right side of the screen.
Utilities 81 When running Dropbo x for the first time, tap Star t to activate it. F ollow the on-scr een instructions to complete the setup . Once Dropbo x is ac tivated , photos and videos taken with the device ’ s camera are uploaded to Dropbo x automatically .
Utilities 82 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 83 Stopping alarms Drag outside the lar ge circle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the large circle to r epeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 84 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .
Utilities 85 V oic e R ec order Use this application to r ecord or play v oice memos. T ap V oice Recor der on the Applications screen. Recor ding voice memos T ap to star t recording . Speak into the microphone at the bott om of the device. T ap to pause recording .
Utilities 86 Managing v oice memos In the list of voice memos, tap and select one of the following: • Share via : Selec t voic e memos to send, and then select a sharing method. • Delete : Selec t voic e memos to delete . • Settings : Change the voice r ecorder settings.
Utilities 87 Tips f or better voice r ecognition • Speak clearly . • Speak in quiet places. • Do not use offensiv e or slang wor ds. • A void speaking in dialec tal accen ts. The device ma y not recog nise your commands or may per form un wanted commands depending on your surroundings or ho w you speak .
Utilities 88 Google Now Launch Google search to view Google Now car ds that show the current wea ther , public transit inf o , your next appointment, and mor e when you ar e most likely to need it. Join Google Now when opening Google search f or the first time.

T ravel & local 91 Getting directions for a destination 1 T ap . 2 T ap , and then selec t a method to enter starting and ending locations: • My current location : Use current loca tion for starting location. • Con tacts : Selec t from the c ontacts list.
T ravel & local 92 Na vigation Use this application to sear ch for a route t o a destination. T ap Navigation on the Applications screen. • Navigation maps , your current location, and other naviga tional data may diff er from actual location information.
93 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. C onnec tions Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 94 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . T ap Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
Settings 95 • Show W i-Fi usage : Set the device to show y our data usage via Wi-F i. • Mobile hotspots : Selec t W i-F i hotspots to prevent applica tions that are running in the background fr om using them. More networks Cust omise settings to contr ol net works.
Settings 96 Kies via W i-F i Connect the device to Samsung Kies via a Wi-F i network . My device Lock scr een Change settings for the locked scr een. • Screen lock : Activate the scr een lock feature . The following options ma y var y depending on the screen lock f eature selected.

Settings 98 Sound Change settings for various sounds on the devic e. • V olume : Adjust the v olume level for call ringtones , music and videos, syst em sounds, and notifications. • Ringtones : Selec t a ringtone to alert you to incoming calls .
Settings 99 • Call alerts : – Answ er vibration : Set the device to vibrat e when the other par ty answers a call. – Call-end vibration : Set the device to vibrat e when the other par ty ends a call. – Call c onnec t tone : Activate or deactivate the call c onnection tone.
Settings 100 • Ringtones and keypad tones : – Ringtones : Selec t a ringtone to alert you to incoming calls . – V ibrations : Add or select a vibration patt ern. – V ibrate when ringing : Set the device to vibrat e and play a ringtone f or incoming calls.
Settings 101 Safety assistance Set the device to send a message to r ecipients in an emergenc y . Pr ess and hold the V olume up button and the V olume down button f or 3 seconds to send the message. • Edit emergency message : Edit the message that will be sent when y ou are in an emergency .
Settings 102 • Show shortcut : Add a shortcut to Ac cessibility on the quick menu that appears when you pr ess and hold the P ower button. • Manage accessibility : Expor t or impor t the accessibility settings to shar e them with other devices.
Settings 103 Language and input Change the settings for t ext input. Some options may not be available depending on the selected language. Language Selec t a display language f or all menus and applications. Default Selec t a default keyboard type f or text input.
Settings 104 • Cursor c ontrol : Enable or disable the smar t keyboard na vigation fea ture to mo ve the cursor by scrolling the keyboar d. • Handwriting : Cust omise settings for handwriting mode , such as recog nition time, pen thickness, or pen colour .
Settings 105 • Aut o-star t speaker : Set the device to automatically turn on the speakerphone when making a call with S V oice . • Show body of message : Set the device to display the t ext of a new message received while in driving mode.
Settings 106 T ext-to-speech options • Pr eferr ed T TS engine : Selec t a speech synthesis engine . T o change the settings for speech synthesis engines , tap . • Speech rat e : Selec t a speed f or the text-to-speech feature . • Listen to an e xample : Listen to the spoken t ext for an example.
Settings 107 Backup and reset Change the settings for manag ing settings and data. • Back up my da ta : Set the device to back up settings and application data t o the Google ser ver . • Backup accoun t : Set up or edit your Google backup account.
Settings 108 • Encr ypt external SD card : Set the device to encr ypt files on a memor y card . If you reset y our device to the factor y defaults with this setting enabled, the devic e will not be able to read y our encr ypted files. Disable this setting befor e resetting the device .
Settings 109 Application manager View and manage the applica tions on your device . Bat ter y View the amoun t of battery power consumed by y our device. Stor age View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it.
