Getting star ted 8 Buttons Button F unction Pow e r • Pr ess and hold to turn the device on or off . • Pr ess and hold for more than 9 seconds t o reset the device if it has fatal errors or hang-ups , or freezes . • Pr ess to lock or unlock the device.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards.
Getting star ted 11 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 12 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 13 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 14 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 15 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 16 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
17 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 18 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 19 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 21 Rotating the scr een Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation. T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion .
Basics 22 • Screen rota tion : Allow or pr event the int er face from r otating when you rotat e the device. • Bluetooth : Activate or deactivate the Bluet ooth featur e. • Mobile data : Activate or deactivate the da ta connection. • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode.
Basics 23 Adding an it em Cust omise the Home screen by adding widgets , folders, or pages . T ap and hold the empty area on the Home screen, and then select one of the follo wing categories: • Apps and widgets : Add widgets t o the Home screen. • F older : Creat e a new folder .
Basics 24 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 25 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 26 Rearranging applica tions T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new loca tion. T o mov e it to another panel, drag it t o the side of the screen. Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience .
Basics 27 Help Ac cess help information t o lear n how to use the devic e and applications or configure impor tant settings. T ap Help on the Applications screen. Select a category to view tips. T o sort categories by an alphabetical order , tap . T o sear ch for keywor ds, tap .
Basics 28 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . T ap and hold and mo ve the floating keyboard t o another location. T o switch t o the fixed keyboard , tap .
Basics 29 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 30 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 31 Removing ac coun ts On the Applications screen, tap Settings , select an account name under Ac counts , select the account t o remove , and then tap Remov e accoun t . T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa.
Basics 32 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. Basics 33 Setting a face and v oice unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . F it your face in the frame to be captur ed and then set a voice command. Then, set a backup unlock PIN or pattern to unlock the scr een in case the face and voice unlock fails.
Basics 34 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
35 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 36 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 37 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap . Sending a message T ap to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 38 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or pr ess and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . To creat e the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 39 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Hide me : Hide your image from the other part y .
Communication 40 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 41 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : M ake a voic e or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 42 Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Impor t from USB stor age , Impor t from SD card , or Impor t from SIM car d . Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to USB stor age , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to SIM card .
Communication 43 Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Edit : Change the group settings . • Add member : Add members t o the group . • Remov e member : Remove members fr om the group .
Communication 44 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 45 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 46 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 47 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 48 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 49 Swit ching bet w een chats Selec t a friend from the friends list. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 50 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e that has a mobile phone number . T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
51 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 52 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 53 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap , enter details, such as name and w eb address , and then tap S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key word , and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear .
W eb & network 54 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 55 T ap and write a note or draw on the scr een. All par ticipants can see what you crea te. T ap to view all shared images in mosaic la yout.
W eb & network 56 C ustomising remote c ontrol settings T ap and use the following options: • Edit Channels : Edit channels display ed on the device’ s screen. • Rooms & Devices : Change connection settings. • Pr ofile : Enter a user pr ofile so that P eel can find top picks.
57 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 58 Setting a song as ringtone or alarm tone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone or alarm tone , tap → Set as , and select an option. Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 59 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap to take a photo . Indicates which storage is in use. Switch between still and video mode. Open the image viewer to display photos . Switch between the fr ont and rear camera. Change the shooting mode. Set delayed-time shots .
Media 60 • Sunset : Use this setting f or richer colours and sharper contrasts . • Dawn : Use this setting f or very subtle colours. • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background .
Media 61 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video . T o pause recor ding, tap . T o stop r ecording, tap . Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. Recor ding mode Indicates which storage is in use.
Media 62 T ap to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. • Limit for Email : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via email .
Media 63 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap to c onfigure settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are av ailable in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Edit shor tcuts : Reorganise shor tcuts to fr equently-used options.
Media 64 • Metering : Selec t a metering method. This determines how light v alues are calculat ed. Cen tre -w eighted measures backgr ound light in the centre of the scene . Spot measures the light value at a specific location. Matrix av erages the entire sc ene.
Media 65 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on how they are enc oded.
Media 66 T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video and tap → T rim . Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video. Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list .
Media 67 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap . Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap to send them to others.
Media 68 P aper Ar tist Use this application to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames . T ap P aper Ar tist on the Applications screen. Use ar tistic tools t o edit an image. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → P aper Pictures folder .
Media 69 V ideo Pla yer Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo Player on the Applications screen. • A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.
Media 70 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select a sharing method, selec t videos by ticking, and then tap Share . Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop -up player .
Media 71 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then selec t a sharing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , select a video , enter information f or the video , and then tap UPL OAD . F lipboard Use this application to ac cess your personalised magazines.

Utilities 78 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T o edit the memo , tap the memo . T ap and use the follo wing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour .
Utilities 79 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.

Utilities 84 Setting alarms T ap , set a time for the alarm to go off , select days for the alarm to r epeat, and then tap S ave . • Snooze : Set an inter val and the number of times f or the alarm to repeat after the pr eset time. • Smar t alarm : Set a time for the alarm to go off bef ore the preset time.

92 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 93 Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances. T o use mor e options, tap . • V isibilit y timeout : Set duration that the device is visible . • Receiv ed files : View r eceived files via the Bluetooth f eature .
Settings 94 Mobile networks • Mobile data : Use to allo w packet switching data networks f or network ser vices. • Data roaming : Use the device t o connect to another network when you are r oaming or your home network is not av ailable. • Ac cess Poin t Names : Set up access point names ( APNs).
Settings 95 Kies via W i-F i Connect the device to Samsung Kies via a Wi-F i network . Block ing mode Selec t which notifications will be blocked and how long t o block them. Driving mode Activate driving mode to set the devic e to read c ontents aloud and specify applications to use in driving mode.

Settings 97 St orage View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it. The actual available capacity of the internal memor y is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications oc cupy par t of the memor y .
Settings 98 L ocation ser vices Change settings for location inf ormation permissions. • Ac cess to my loca tion : Set the device to allow applications t o use your current location information. • Use GPS sat ellites : Set the device to use the GPS satellit e for finding the current location.
Settings 99 • Shor tcuts : Set the device to show and edit application shortcuts on the locked screen. This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . • Unlock effect : Selec t an eff ect when you unlock the screen.

Settings 101 Language and input Change the settings for t ext input. Some options may not be available depending on the selected language. Language Selec t a display language f or all menus and applications. Default Selec t a default keyboard type f or text input.
