Getting star ted 11 r The items supplied with the devic e and any a vailable accessories ma y var y depending on the region or service provider . r The supplied items ar e designed only for this device and may not be c ompatible with other devices.
Getting star ted 12 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards . r Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. r Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot.
Getting star ted 13 5 Replace the back co ver . Removing the SIM or USIM car d and batter y 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the batt er y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 Charging the ba tter y Charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use the charger t o charge the battery . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers, batt eries, and cables .
Getting star ted 15 r The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the batter y . r If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 16 Reducing the battery consumption Y our device provides options that help you sa ve batter y power . By customising these options and deactivating features in the backgr ound, you can use the device longer between char ges: r Activate power-sa ving mode.
Getting star ted 17 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downwar ds. 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in place . 4 Replace the back co ver . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memor y card , first unmount it for saf e removal.
Getting star ted 18 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f ormatted on a computer may not be compatible with the devic e. F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps ĺ Settings ĺ Storage ĺ F ormat SD card ĺ F ormat SD card ĺ Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 19 Holding the device Do not cov er the antenna area with your hands or other objects. This ma y cause connec tivity problems or drain the battery . L ock ing and unlock ing the device When not in use, lock the devic e to prev ent unwanted operation.
Getting star ted 20 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: r Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode. r Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute . r Open the notifications panel at the top of the screen, and then tap Sound .
21 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the top of the scr een provide information about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 22 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers or the S P en to use the touch screen. r Do not allow the touch scr een to come into contact with other elec trical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunction. r Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 23 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item for mor e than 2 seconds to access av ailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or pr eview to a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage , map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the Applications scr een to see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sure the motion f eature is activated. On the Home scr een, tap Apps ĺ Settings ĺ Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the scr een Many applications allow displa y in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the device after it has been idle f or some time or when the screen has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages . Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contac t details, pick up and hold the device t o your ear to make a call.
Basics 27 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then move the devic e to the lef t or right to mov e the item to another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the screen, and then mo ve the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 28 Double -tapping Double -tap the device to mov e to the top of a list of contacts or emails. Rotating While the screen is locked , tap and hold the screen, and then r otate the device to landscape orientation to launch the camera.
Basics 29 T urning ov er T urn ov er the device to mute ringtone , pause media playback, or mute the FM radio . Shak ing r Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . r Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information fr om Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWeather .
Basics 30 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is saved in Galler y ĺ Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 31 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the screen, and then tilt the device back and f or th to zoom in or out. Moving When the touch screen is turned off , mov e your hand across the P roximity/Light sensor to turn on the screen and view the number of missed calls and new messages , the batter y power lev el, and more .
Basics 32 P ageBuddy The P age Buddy feature allo ws you to use specific applications based on your actions. P ages related t o your ac tions appear in the follo wing conditions: r When you pull out the S P en from the slot. r When you connect a headset or dock to the device .
Basics 33 Opening a menu With the S P en button pr essed, draw to open a list of the screen ’ s available options. Undoing the last ac tion With the S P en button pr essed, draw to undo the last action.
Basics 34 Capturing scr eenshots With the S P en button pr essed, touch the scr een until you hear a click . A screenshot is sa ved in the Galler y ĺ Screenshots folder . It is possible to draw or write on or to cr op a screenshot. T he edited image is sav ed in the Galler y ĺ IMG_edited folder .
Basics 35 Selec ting text With the S P en button pr essed, drag left or right on the text to select. I f you drag between lines, y ou may select unwanted t ext. T o selec t only the text you int end, drag across the middle of the text or drag the text selec tion icons .
Basics 36 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, draw a line ar ound an area to select it. The selected area is sav ed in the Galler y ĺ Screenshots folder . Selec t an application to use with the selected area fr om the icons that appear at the bottom of the scr een.
Basics 37 S P en K eeper When the touch screen is off and S P en is remo ved fr om the device, the devic e displays a pop- up aler t and emits a sound if you walk.
Basics 38 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar at the top of the scr een to repor t missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, device status , and more. Drag do wn from the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scroll the list t o see additional aler ts.
Basics 39 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the device ’ s features. It displays indicat or icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scroll left or right.
Basics 40 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it to the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red , release it. Rearranging panels Adding a new panel T ap ĺ Edit page ĺ . Moving a panel T ap ĺ Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 41 U sing widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide con venient func tions and inf ormation on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home screen. r Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 42 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sav e batter y power and maintain device performance. Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications, and then tap End all .
Basics 43 Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap ĺ Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled .
Basics 44 Entering t ext Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages. T o enter text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 45 Changing language keyboar ds Slide the space key left or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap , and then write a wor d with a finger or the S Pen. Suggest ed words appear as characters are enter ed. Select a suggested word .
Basics 46 C onnec ting to a W i-F i network Connect the device to a W i-Fi network to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 116) T urning Wi-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap W i-Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 47 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play Store , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. Cr eate Google and Samsung acc ounts to hav e the best experience with the device .
Basics 48 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file formats ar e not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware.
Basics 49 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media device ĺ Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransf er Prot ocol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 50 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings ĺ Lock scr een ĺ Screen lock ĺ P attern . Draw a pattern b y connecting four dots or more , and then draw the pattern again to v erify it. Set a secondar y unlock PIN. Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings ĺ Lock scr een ĺ Screen lock ĺ PIN .
Basics 51 Upgrading the devic e The device can be upg raded to the latest software. This f eature may not be a vailable depending on the region or ser vice pr ovider . Upgrading with Samsung Kies Launch Samsung Kies and connect the device to the computer .
52 C ommunica tion Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Making a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: r Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad, and then tap . r Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 53 F inding contac ts Enter a name , phone number , or email addr ess to find a contact in the contacts list. As characters are enter ed, pr edicted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call t o it. Making an international call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 54 r ĺ Noise reduction off : Deactivate the noise reduction feature that r emoves background noise so that the other party can hear you more clearly .
Communication 55 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or press and hold the headset button. T o send a message when rejecting an incoming call, tap Reject call with message . T o creat e the rejection message, tap ĺ Call settings ĺ Set reject messages .
Communication 56 V ideo calls Making a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: r Swit ch Camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 57 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images. C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontacts, including phone numbers, email addresses , and others. T ap Contacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 58 Editing a contact Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap ĺ Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap ĺ Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contac t f or it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 59 Syncing with Samsung C ontac ts T ap ĺ Merge with Samsung . Contacts synced with Samsung Contacts appear with in the contacts list. If a contact is added or deleted on the device, it is also added to or delet ed from Samsung Contacts, and vice v ersa.
Communication 60 C o ntact groups Adding c ontac ts to a group Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . S elect contac ts to add , and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: r Create : Make a new group . r Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 61 Messaging Use this application to send t ext messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 62 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by contact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message. Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad, and then f ollow the instruc tions from y our ser vice provider .
Communication 63 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap ĺ Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 64 Google Mail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. r This application may not be a vailable depending on the region or ser vice pr ovider . r This application may be labelled diff erently depending on the region or service provider .
Communication 65 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual f olders, but uses labels instead . When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap t o view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , select the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 66 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are automatically sa ved. T o delete chat histor y , tap ĺ Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connected with people via Google ’ s social net work service.

W eb & network 70 Bluetooth Bluetooth creat es a direc t wireless c onnection bet ween two devic es over short distances. Use Bluetooth to ex change data or media files with other devices. r Samsung is not responsible f or the loss, interception, or misuse of data sent or receiv ed via the Bluetooth feature .
W eb & network 71 AllShare C ast Use this f eature to c onnect your device to a large scr een with an AllShare Cast dongle, and then share y our contents. r This f eature may not be a vailable depending on the region or ser vice pr ovider . r Some files may be buffer ed during playback , depending on the network connection.
W eb & network 72 Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , select a file, tap , and then use the following options: r Send to Nearby U sers : Share files with nearby devic es that have AllShare Pla y activated. r F acebook/T witter/Flickr/Picasa : Upload files to a social network site .
W eb & network 73 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain information about products. Y ou can also use this feature t o make payments and buy tickets f or transpor tation or events after downloading the r equired applications.
W eb & network 74 S Beam Use the S Beam f eature to send data, such as music , videos, images, and documents . Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.
75 Media Music Pla y er Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. r Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s sof tware v ersion. r Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 76 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the currently-pla ying song as ringtone, tap ĺ Set as ĺ Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap ĺ Creat e playlist . Enter a title and tap OK . T ap Add music , select songs to include, and then tap Done .
Media 77 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview screen wher e the camera should focus. When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . T ap and hold to take a series of photos. Indicates which storage is in use.
Media 78 r Sunset : Use this setting f or richer colours and sharper contrasts . r Dawn : Use this setting f or very subtle colours. r Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . r Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters.
Media 79 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap ĺ Shooting mode ĺ P anorama . T ap and move the camera in any dir ec tion. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequence.
Media 80 Recor ding mode Switch between the front and rear camera. Change the ash setting. Change recor ding mode. Select among various eects that are av ailable. Change the camera settings. Indicates which storage is in use. Switch between still and video mode.
Media 81 Use one of the f ollowing methods: r Use the V olume button to zoom in or out. r Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. r The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution.
Media 82 r White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are designed f or specific lighting situations. T hese settings are similar to the heat range f or white -balance exposure in pr ofessional cameras.
Media 83 r V ideo qualit y : Set the quality level for videos . r Storage : Selec t the memor y location for st orage. r Reset : Reset the camera settings. Shor tcuts Reorganise shortcuts for easy access t o the camera ’ s various options. T ap ĺ Edit shor tcuts .
Media 84 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: r Double -tap anywhere to z oom in. r Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature to ex ecute a function with par ticular motion.
Media 85 r Print : Print via a USB or W i-Fi c onnection. The device is only compatible with some Samsung printers. r Detect text : Launch Photo Reader to extrac t text from the image . r Rename : Rename the file. r Scan for nearby devic es : Search for devic es that have media sharing activated.
Media 86 T agging faces When viewing an image, tap ĺ F ace tag ĺ On . A yellow frame appears ar ound the recog nised face. T ap the face, tap Add name , and then select or add a contac t. When the face tag appears on an image , tap the face tag and use available options , such as making calls or sending messages.
Media 87 V ideo Pla y er Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo Player on the Applications screen. r A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX V ideo -On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.
Media 88 Using P opup V ideo player P opup Video player allo ws you to use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop -up play er . Spread two fingers apart on the screen to enlarge the pla yer or pinch to r educe it.
Media 89 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then select a sharing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , selec t a video, ent er information for the video , and then tap Upload . F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM radio .

Utilities 105 Stopping alarms Drag outside the circle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the circle to r epeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 106 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scientific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap ĺ Scientific calculator .
