Getting star ted 9 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 11 • The items supplied with the devic e and any a vailable accessories ma y var y depending on the region or service provider . • The supplied items ar e designed only for this device and may not be c ompatible with other devices.
Getting star ted 12 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.
Getting star ted 13 • When the battery power is low , the device emits a warning tone and display s a low battery power message. • If the batter y is completely dischar ged, the device cannot be turned on immediately when the char ger is connected.
Getting star ted 14 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 15 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 16 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 17 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 18 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 20 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers or the S P en to use the touch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 24 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is sav ed in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 25 P age Buddy Use this f eature t o use specific applications based on your actions. P ages related t o your actions appear in the following conditions: • When you pull out the S P en from the slot. • When you c onnect a headset or dock to the device.
Basics 26 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 27 Opening a menu With the S P en button pr essed, dra w to open a list of the screen ’ s available options . Undoing the last ac tion With the S P en button pr essed, dra w to undo the last action.
Basics 28 Capturing scr eenshots With the S P en button pr essed, touch the scr een until you hear a click. A screenshot is saved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder . It is possible to draw or write on or to cr op a screenshot. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → IMG_edited folder .
Basics 29 Selec ting text With the S P en button pr essed, drag left or right on the text to select. If you drag between lines, y ou may select unwant ed tex t. T o select only the tex t you int end, drag across the middle of the text or drag the text selection icons.
Basics 30 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a line around an ar ea to select it. The selected area is sav ed in the Galler y → Screenshots folder . Select an application to use with the selected area fr om the icons that appear at the bott om of the screen.
Basics 31 Quick C ommand Use this f eature t o make a call, send a message , or search f or conten t by dra wing gesture commands on the screen. With the S P en button pressed , drag the S P en up on the screen to launch Quick Command . A dding gesture c ommands T ap → → Selec t an application or Selec t functions/settings .
Basics 32 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 33 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 34 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release it . Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 35 U sing widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 36 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications , tap End all .
Basics 37 Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled .
Basics 38 Changing the k eyboard type T ap any t ex t field, open the notifications panel , tap Choose input method , and then select the type of keyboard to use . Using the Samsung ke yboard Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter punctuation marks.
Basics 39 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 40 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 41 Removing ac coun ts On the Applications screen, tap Settings , select an account name under Ac counts , select the account t o remove , and then tap Remov e accoun t . T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa.
Basics 42 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 43 Setting a face and v oice unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . F it your face in the frame to be captur ed and then set a voice command. Then, set a backup unlock PIN or pattern to unlock the scr een in case the face and voice unlock fails.
Basics 44 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
45 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 46 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 47 • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty . This disconnects you from the con versation. • → Manage confer ence call : Hav e a private con versation with one par ty during a multipar ty call or disconnect one par t y form the multipart y call.
Communication 48 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle , or press the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 49 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Call settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Enter a number and tap Enable . Ending a call T ap End call to end a call.
Communication 50 • → Hide me : Hide your image from the other part y . • → Outgoing image : Selec t an image to sho w it to the other par ty . • → Animated emotions : Apply emotional icons to y our image. • → Theme view : Apply decora tive icons t o your image .
Communication 51 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter c ontac t information. • : Add an image .

Communication 57 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 58 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter recipients , a subjec t, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap +C C/BCC to add more r ecipients. T ap to attach images. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach video to attach videos .
Communication 59 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.

W eb & network 63 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 64 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 65 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 66 AllShar e Play Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send any file on an y device to another device or web st orage ser ver . T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices as file ser vers .
W eb & network 67 Using the Gr oup Play f eatur e Share scr eens with multiple devices that ar e connected to the same Wi-F i network. Selec t a media category , selec t files by ticking, and then tap → Group Pla y . Enter a PIN and tap Done to star t Group P lay .
W eb & network 68 Smar t Remote Use this application to c onnec t to a personal T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap Smar t Remote on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a Wi-F i net work and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
69 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 70 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Call ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK . Selec t songs to include , and then tap Done .
Media 71 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use. Switch between still and video mode.
Media 72 • Sunset : Use this setting f or richer colours and sharper contrasts . • Dawn : Use this setting f or very subtle colours. • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters.
Media 73 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video . T o stop recor ding, tap . The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution. Recor ding mode Switch between the front and r ear camera.
Media 74 T ap to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. • Limit for Email : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via email .
Media 75 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap to c onfigure settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are av ailable in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Edit shor tcuts : Reorganise shor tcuts to fr equently-used options.
Media 76 • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are desig ned for specific lighting situa tions. These settings are similar to the heat range f or white -balance exposure in pr ofessional cameras .
