Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards , and then push the memor y card down. 1 2 3 Slide the memor y card backwards until it locks in to place . 4 Replace the battery and back cover .
Getting star ted 17 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Slide the memor y card f or war ds until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 18 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 19 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
20 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 22 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 27 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 28 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker). T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out.
Basics 29 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 30 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 31 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 32 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 33 T ap the widgets panel area at the upper part of the screen. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Rearranging panels Moving a panel Scroll left or right on the widgets panel area, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 34 Opening from r ecently-used applica tions Pr ess and hold the Home button to open the list of recen tly-used applications. Selec t an application icon t o open. Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance .
Basics 35 Rearranging panels Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it.
Basics 36 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 37 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 38 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 39 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 40 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 41 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 42 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
43 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 44 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 45 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . Sending a message T ap → Send message to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 46 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle . If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When a second call comes in, end or hold the first call. Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 47 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 48 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 49 Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image . • / : Add or delete a con tact field. Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete .

Communication 53 Sending messages T ap , add recipients , enter a message, and then tap . Use the f ollowing methods to add r ecipients: • Enter a phone number .
Communication 54 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 55 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 56 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter recipients , a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 57 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap → Refresh to manually retriev e new messages. T ap to view messages in other labels.
Communication 58 G+ Photos Use this application to shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vice. T ap G+ Photos on the Applications screen.
59 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 60 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 61 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → → S ave . Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a key word , and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear .
W eb & network 62 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
63 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 64 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 65 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 70) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 66 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 67 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause r ecording , tap . T o stop r ecording, tap .
Media 68 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 69 • Metering : Selec t a metering method. This determines how light v alues are calculat ed. Cen tre -w eighted measures backgr ound light in the centre of the scene . Spot measures the light value at a specific location. Matrix av erages the entire sc ene.
Media 70 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 71 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . S elect a video to watch it and tap . Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add the image t o favourites . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder .
Media 72 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap .
Media 73 Organising with f olders Creat e a folder to organise images or videos stor ed in the device. Y ou can cop y or move files from one f older to another . T o cr eate a new f older , tap . Enter a name f or the folder , tap OK , and then tick images or videos.
Media 74 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .
Media 75 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then selec t a sharing method. Uploading videos T ap → Uploads → , select a video, ent er information f or the video, and then tap . R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio . T o listen to the F M radio, y ou must connec t a headset, which ser ves as the radio an tenna.

81 Utilities Memo Use this application to r ecord impor tant inf ormation to sav e and view at a later date . T ap Memo on the Applications screen. C omposing memos T ap , enter a memo , and then tap S ave . T o change the backgr ound colour , tap → Colour .
Utilities 82 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T ap and use the follo wing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour . • Lock : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it.
Utilities 83 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 84 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others at the right side of the screen.
Utilities 85 When running Dropbo x for the first time, tap Star t to activate it. F ollow the on-scr een instructions to complete the setup . Once Dropbo x is ac tivated , photos and videos taken with the device ’ s camera are uploaded to Dropbo x automatically .
Utilities 86 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time of many major cities in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, or set a timer .

Utilities 89 Managing v oice memos In the list of voice memos, tap and select one of the following: • Share via : Selec t voic e memos to send, and then select a sharing method. • Delete : Selec t voic e memos to delete . • Settings : Change the voice r ecorder settings.
Utilities 90 Hands-free mode In hands-free mode, the devic e will read cont ent aloud when you have inc oming calls, messages, and notifications so y ou can use the device without hands while driving. F or example, the devic e will read aloud the caller ’ s name or phone number when a call comes in.

95 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. C onnec tions Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 96 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
Settings 97 T o use mor e options, tap . • Data roaming : Set the device to use data connections when you ar e roaming. • Restric t backgr ound data : Set the device to disable sync in the backgr ound while using a mobile network. • Aut o sync data : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications.
Settings 98 VPN Set up and connect to vir tual private networks ( VPNs). Nearby devic es • F ile sharing : Activate media sharing to allo w other DLNA- enabled devices to access media files on your device . • Shared c ontents : Set the device to share y our content with other devices .

Settings 102 • Call ac cessories : – Aut omatic answ ering : Set the device to answer aut omatically af ter a specified period (available only when a headset is c onnected). – Aut omatic answ ering timer : Selec t the length of time that the device w aits befor e answering calls.

Settings 104 P ow er saving mode Activate po wer-sa ving mode and change the settings for power -saving mode. • CPU pow er saving : Set the device to limit some syst em resourc e usage. • Screen pow er saving : Set the device to decrease the brightness of the displa y .
Settings 105 – The po wer ke y ends calls : Set the device to end a call when pressing the P ow er button. • Show shortcut : Add a shortcut to Ac cessibility on the quick menu that appears when you pr ess and hold the P ower button.
Settings 106 • T ap and hold delay : Set the recognition time f or tapping and holding the screen. • Interaction contr ol : Activate int erac tion contr ol mode to restrict the reaction of the device f or inputs in an application. Language and input Change the settings for t ext input.

Settings 109 – Zoom : Set the device to zoom in or out while viewing images in Galler y or brow sing webpages , when you tap and hold two points with y our fingers and then tilt the device back and f or th.
