Your phone 12 Deletes char acters from the display . When pres sed and held in Idle Mo de , quickly accesses the New memo screen. In Menu Mode, returns to previous menu. Ends a call. When pressed and held, switches the phone on or off . In Menu Mode, cancells your input and returns to Idle Mode.

Your phone 14 Display Display layout The display has three areas: Area Description First line Displays va rious icons. See page 15. Middle lines Display messages, inst ructions and any information that you enter , such as number to be dialled. Last line Shows the functions currently assigned to the two soft keys.
Your phone 15 Icons Icon Description Shows the received signal strength. The more the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Appears when a call is in progress. Appears when you are out of a service area. When it displays, you cannot make or receive calls.
Your phone 16 Appears when you are connected to the GPRS network. Appears when your S IM card supports the Call diverting status indic ation and the Call dive rtin g feat u re is a cti v ated. When your SIM card supports ALS (Alternate Line Service), this icon may appears wi th the number 1, 2, or both.
Your phone 17 Backlight The display and the k e ypad are illuminated by a backli ght. When you pre ss any key , the backlig ht illuminates. It turns off if y ou don’ t press an y key withi n a given peri od of time , dependi ng on the Backlight menu optio n.
Your phone 18 Camera The camera embedd ed in your phone allows you to take a picture of people or events while on the move. For further details about us ing the Camera feature, see page 99.
19 Getting started Inserting/Removing the SIM card When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a SIM card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN, any optional services av a ila ble a nd so on. • K eep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small ch ildren.
Getting started 20 Removing the SIM card T o remove the SIM card, sl ide the card out of the holder , as shown. Installing/Removing/Charging the battery Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery . Use only approved bat t eries and chargers.
Getting started 21 2. Press the battery against the back of the phone until it clicks i nto place. Removing the battery 1. Switch off the phone by pressing and ho lding the key . 2. T o remove the battery , pull the battery catch toward t he top of the phone and hold it in that position.
Getting started 22 Charging the batt er y by usi n g the trav el adapter Note : The phone can be used whi le the battery i s being charged, but this causes the battery to charge mo re s low ly . 1. Plug the connector o f the tr av el adap ter into the jack at the bottom of the phone.
Getting started 23 3. When charging is finished, disconnect the adapter from the pow er outlet and from the phone by pressing the grey tab s on both sides of the connector and pulling the connector out.
Getting started 24 Switching the phone on or off T o switch the phone on: 1. Hold down the key until the phone switches on. 2. If the phone asks for a PIN, enter the PIN and press the Ok soft key . For further details, see page 166. The phone searches for your network and the current date and tim e a ppear on the dis pla y .
Getting started 25 Selecting functions and options Y our phone offers a set of functions that allow you to customise your phone. These functions are arranged in menus and sub-menus, accessed via the two soft k eys marked and Each menu and sub-menu allows yo u to view and alter the settings of a particular function.

28 Call functions Making a call Using the number ke ypad When the idle screen is displayed, ente r the area code and phone number , and press the key . Note: If you have set the Auto redial option to On , the number is redialled au to matically up to ten times if the p ers on y ou called does not an s w er or the line is bus y .
Call functions 29 Making an internation al call 1. Press and hold the 0 key for the international prefix. The + character appears. 2. Enter the country code, area code and pho ne number and press the k ey .
Call functions 30 3. T o dial the number , press the key . T o view each call record, see “Call History” on page 70. Viewing m issed calls If you have a subscription that includes the Caller Line .
Call functions 31 Speed-dialling fro m Contacts Once you have stored numbers in the Contacts, you can dial a number simply by pressing one or two keys. F or furt her details, see page 61. Ending a call When you want to finish your call, briefly press the key or slide the folder down.
Call functions 32 Adjusting t he volume During a call, if you wish to adjust the earpiece volume, use t he v olu me k eys on the l eft side of th e phone. When you hear a sound, such as ringtone, you can also adjust the earpie ce v olu m e . But it is n ot fi x e d.
Call functions 33 Switching the microphone off (Mute ) Y ou can temporarily switch your phone’ s microphone off so that the other person cannot hear you. Example : Y ou may wish to say something to another person in the room but do not want the calling person to hear y ou.
Call functions 34 3. Select the Find name option and press the Select soft key . The Co ntacts entries are listed. 4. Enter the first a few letters of the name that you want to find. The Contacts entri es are listed st arting with the first entry matching yo ur input.
Call functions 35 This option is helpful for entering a password or account number when you call an automated system, lik e a ban kin g servic e. T o send the D TMF tones: 1. When you are connected to the teleservice system, press the Opti ons soft k ey .
Call functions 36 Using the v oiceclarity The voiceclarity feature ma kes received sound loud and clear during a call. It is useful when you are in a noisy place. The phone turns on the voiceclarity feature automatically after a while when you are in a noisy place and the voiceclari ty is set to on.
Call functions 37 T o make a call whi le y ou ha v e a call in progress: 1. Enter the phone number that you w ant to dial or look it up in the C on tac ts . 2. Press the key to dial the second call. The first call is autom atically put on hold. Or alternatively: 1.
Call functions 38 2. T o switch between the two calls, press the Swap soft key . 3. T o end the call on hold, press th e Opti ons soft key and select the End held call option . T o end t he curre nt call, pr ess the key . The call on hold is con tinued.
Call functions 39 3. T o join the first participant to the multi- part y call, press the Options soft key and select the Join option. Press the Select soft key . 4. T o add a new person to the multi-party call, call the person in the normal way . Then press the Optio ns soft key and select the Join option.
Call functions 40 Or , select the End current option to end the cal l in progress. And then you can answer the new call. Having a private conversation wit h one participant 1. Press the Options soft key and select the Split option. Press the Select soft k ey .
Call functions 41 Using the ear-microphone With the ear-microphone, you can mak e or answer a call without holding the phone. When you connect the ear-microphone to the jack at the right si de of the phone, the button on the ear-microphone w orks as listed below: To Press redial the last call the button twice in Id le Mode.
42 Entering text At many times while you are using y our phone, you need to enter text, such as whe n storing a name in the Contacts, writing a new message, creating your personal greeting or scheduling events on your calendar .
Entering text 43 Changing the text input mode When you are in a field that allows char acters to be entered, you will see the text input m ode indicator at the bottom of the display . Example : Entering a name in the Contacts T o change to another text input mode: 1.
Entering text 44 Quickly changi ng the text input mode Using the T9 mode T o type a word in the T9 mode: 1. Start entering the word by pressing keys 2 to 9 . Press each key only once for each letter . Example : T o enter “hello” in the T9 mode, press the 4 , 3 , 5 , 5 , and 6 key s.
Entering text 45 If Spell appears above the left soft key while you are entering text, the word does not exist in the T9 dictionary . T o type words not found in the T9 mode, change the text input mo de to the ABC mo d e, or proceed as follows: 1. Press the Spell soft key , or press the right soft key and select the Add word option.
Entering text 46 Inserting a space T o insert a space between words, press the key . Entering a nu m b er direc tly T o enter a number , press and hold the number key . Scrolling T o move the cur sor to the left or right with in t he text, press the Left or Righ t k ey .
Entering text 47 Note : The cursor moves to the rig ht when you press a different key . When entering the sam e le tter twice or a differen t letter on the same key , just press the Right key or wait a few seconds f or the cursor to move to the right autom a tically , and then enter the next letter .
Entering text 48 Changing the case T o change the case of the next letter(s) that you type, press the key . There are three cases: • Lower Case (no indicator) • Initial Capital ( ) • Capital Lock ( ) Inserting a space T o insert a space between words, press the key .
Entering text 49 Using the symbolic mode The Symbolic mode enables you to enter symbols i n your t ext. Using the number mode The Number mode enables you to enter numbers in your text. Press the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter . To Press the display more symbols Up or Down key .

57 Contacts menu Contacts offer the fo llowing feature s : • Contacts : allows you to find, create or set up the speed-dialling feature and manage Contacts entries. • Management : allows y ou to create or remo ve your own number , set up caller groups and check the memory status.
Contacts menu 58 Changing the phone memory entries Scroll to the c ategory that you w ant to edit by pressing the Left or Right key . Foll owi ng ca teg ori es are available and yo u can edit information of each category by pressing the Opti ons soft key .
Contacts menu 59 Changing the SIM me mo ry entries T o change the SIM memory entry’s information, press the Options soft key . The following options are availab le: Edit number This option allows you to change the number . Y ou can also add a new number if none has been stored for the selected category .
Contacts menu 60 Add entry Y ou can store phone numbers and the corresponding names in the memory of your SIM card. In addition, you can store up to 1000 names in the p hone memory and each name can be associated with up to five numbers. 1. Enter the number you want to save.
Contacts menu 61 For information about how to enter char acters, see page 42. 6. When you are satisf ied, press the Ok soft k ey . 7. If you select Phone in step 3, go to step 8. If you select SIM in step 3, enter the location number and press the Ok soft key .

Contacts menu 63 Dialling a nu mber store d in the SIM card Once you have stored phone numbers in your SIM card, you can dial them easil y whenever required. T o dial a number stored in the SIM card: 1. Enter the number of the SIM card location where the number you want to dial is stored.
Contacts menu 64 Send all via infrared Via the infrared connection, you can send your Contacts entries to another IrDA - compliant devices and vice versa. Note : This feature may not be available depending on the devices. Sending your Contacts 1. Align the IrDA po rts on both sides each other .

Scroll to a desired memory selection and place a check mark ahead of it by pressing the Sele ct soft key . Selecti ng All places check marks on all of the memories.
Contacts menu 67 Own number T o store your own phone number(s) with a name: 1. Scroll to an empty location by pressing the Up or Down key and press the Select soft k ey . 2. When Edit number highlights, press the Select soft key . 3. Enter your number and press the Ok key .
Contacts menu 68 Group setting Y ou can change the s e ttings of the ten predefined caller groups. 1. Select a caller group by pressing the Up or Down key and press the Select soft key . 2. Scroll to a se tting option by press i ng the Up o r Down key and press the Select soft key .
Contacts menu 69 Memory status Y ou can check how many names are store d in SIM card and phone’s m emo ry . When you have fin ished, pre ss the s oft key or the key to exit. Service directory Note : This feature may not be available depending on your SI M card.
70 Call history Via this menu, you can view the: • calls you missed, received or dialled. • cost of your calls. • length of your calls. Note : Y ou can access the numbers in the three types of call records by pre ssing the key in Idle Mode.
Call history 71 By pressing the Options soft key , you can also: • delete the current call record from the list. • delete all of the calls. • paste the number into Contacts. Dialled calls This op tion let s you vi ew the las t 20 di alled numbers.
Call history 72 Call time This option lets y ou vie w the timers for call s mad e and received. Notes: • If your SIM card supports the AL S (Alternate Line Service) feature, yo u m us t first sele ct the appropriate line.
Call history 73 The following options are availab le: Last call cost : cost of the last call made. Total cost : total cost of all calls made since the cost counter was last reset. If the total cost exceeds the maximum cost set via t he Set max cost option, you can no longer make any calls until you reset the counter .
74 Games Y ou can download MIDlets (Ja va applications running on mobile phones) from various sources using the W AP Browser and store them in y our phone. Applications A list of Jav a games is display ed. In basic, two pre- loaded MIDlets (Jav a games) are provided.
Games 75 Play : allows you to start a new game or a saved game. Saved game allows y ou to conti nue the beginning of last stage you played. Instructions : shows you the explanation of control keys, offense items and defense items. Configuration : allows you to turn the sound, vibration o n or off and select the game speed from 1 to 5.
Games 76 Special attacks Level 1: A u ror a, all enemies are hit by a snowb all. Level 2: Ic e dr agon, all enemies are hit by a snowball and frozen for 8 seconds . Level 3: Ic icle storm , dou b le powe re d sno wb a ll attack to all enemies and decreasing enemi es’ attack accuracy for 10 sec onds.
Games 77 Playing a gam e Y our score goes up when you remove the bubbles. Only when more than 3 same coloured bubb les line up horizontally or diagonally , they disappear . T o line up the bubbles, mov e the band rounding three bubbles to suitable plac e and rotate it.
Games 78 Passw ord : enter the password required to connect to the GPRS netw ork. DNS setting : en ter the DNS address. Th e DNS (Domain Name Server) address to connect the Jav a server is auto matically set when making d ata call set up. Memory status Y ou can check the free space for J av a download.

Sound settings Y ou can use the Sound settings fe ature to customise v arious settings, such as the: • ringtone, v olume and type for incoming calls o r messages.
Phone settings 80 More ringt ones : allows you to download melo dies via WAP . My sounds : allows you to select one of the sounds received from other sources, suc h as t heW AP sites, the EasyStudio PC software or photo messages. Ring volume : allows you to adjust the ring volume.
Phone settings 81 • T one: the phone rings usi ng the tone selected via the Tone option. See above. • Vibration : the phone vibrates but does not ring. • Vibra tion then tone: the phone firs t vibr at es and then the phone rings. Re petition : allows you to specify how often the phone informs you of a new message.
Phone settings 82 Minute minder This menu option allows you to specify whether or not the phone beeps every mi nute during a call to keep you informed of the length of yo ur call. The following options are availab le: Off : the phone does not beep. On : the phone beeps every minute.
Phone settings 83 Display Y ou can change the background image and the colour of the components on the display according to your preference and needs. Wallpaper This option allows yo u to change the background image to be displayed in Idle Mode. The following options are availab le: Anim ation s : allows yo u to select one of the animations.
Phone settings 84 Backlight Y ou can specify how long the phone uses the backlight. Select how long the backligh t remains on after the last key is pressed. LCD bright ne s s This option allows you to adjust the brightness of the display screens to make them lighter or dark er .
Phone settings 85 Security The security settings enable you to restrict the use of your phone to the peop le and types of calls of your choice. V arious codes and passwords are used to protect the features of your p hone. For more info rmation, see page 166 -168.
Phone settings 86 Phone lock When the Phone lock f eature is enabled, the phone is locked and you must enter the 8-digit phone password each time the phone is switched on. The password is preset to “00000000” at the factory . T o change the phone password, see the Change password menu option below .
Phone settings 87 SIM lock T o enable the SIM lock feat ure, you must enter a new four- to eight -digit SIM lock code, and confirm it by entering it a ga in. The following options are availab le: Disable : you can use any other SIM cards with your pho ne.

Press the Remove soft key . The phone sends your settings t o the network and displays the network’ s acknowledgement.
Phone settings 91 Change barring password : allows you to chang e barring password. Y ou can specify individual call barring options for each of the followi ng call type s: • V oice calls only • F.
Phone settings 92 Y ou can also deactivate all call barring options by selecting the Cancel all option. Changing the barri ng password Y ou can set and change the call barring password obtained from y o ur se rvice pro vider . 1. Select Change ba rring pa ssw or d from the Call barring screen, and press the Select soft key .
Phone settings 93 2. Press the Activate soft key to co nfirm your settings. The phone sends your settings t o the network and displays the network’ s acknowledgement. Deactivating specific ca l l waiting op tions 1. Select the ty pe of call to which the option applies.
Phone settings 94 2. Press the Up or Down k e y un til the pr efer red network highlights and press the Select soft key . Y ou are connected to that network when roaming. Caller ID Y ou can prevent your phone number from bei ng display ed on the phone of the p erson being called.
Phone settings 95 Others Greeting message This menu option allows you to set a g re eting message to be displayed briefly when the phone is switched on. When you access this menu, the current message displays. For further inform ation on how to enter tex t, see page 42.
Phone settings 96 Slide down operat ion Y ou can select the phone’s action when y ou slide the folder down. Stop operation : when you slide t he folder down, the phone stops the current operation and locks the keypad aut omaticall y . Continue operation : when you slide the folder down, the phone performs the current operation continuously .
Phone settings 97 Fax mode Y ou can use your phone as a modem for f axing when it is connected to c omputing devices. Y ou need to purchase a data kit from your local Samsung dealer . In this menu, you can enable the fax mode on your phone. The following options are availab le: Off : you can send or receive data calls.
Phone settings 98 Reset settings This menu option allows you to reset your phone to its default configuration. Y ou can reset all of the settings at once. When a confirming message appears, press the Yes soft key to re set settings. Then enter the phone password and press the Ok soft k ey .
99 Camera Using the camera module embedd ed in your phone, you can t ake pict ures fo r people or events while o n the mov e. Additionally , y ou can send photos to other people in a picture message or as an e-mail attachment. The camera prod uces JPEG pictures.
Camera 100 The icons on the top line of the display indicate the size, quality , flash type and current mode (shown if you select the mult i-shot mode or night mode). 3. Adjust the image by ai ming the came ra to the subject. To Press the adjust the brightness of the picture Left or Right key .
Camera 101 For more information about these functions, see “Using the Camera options” on page 102. 4. Press the soft k ey or the Camera ( ) key on the right side of the phone to take a pict ur e. The picture is autom atically saved in the My photos (see page 105).
Camera 102 Rename : allows you to rename the taken picture. Go to my photos : allows you to see the taken pictures in the My photos (see page 105). Set as : allows you to set it as a wallpaper or a caller ID. W allpaper : allows you to set it as a wallpaper .
Camera 103 Note : The zoom control bar and the brigthness control bar do not display when you use the multi-shot mode. Night mode : this option allow s you to take a picture of the best quality when it is dark. Capture only : you can take pictures w ithout review .
Camera 104 Photo size : sets the image size to one of VGA(640*480) , QVGA(320*240) , QQVGA(160*120) and Mobile(128*120) . The selected image size displays on the capture screen. Photo quality : allows you to select the image quality from Super fine , Fine , Normal , and Economy .
Camera 105 My photos In this menu, you can review the pictures y ou hav e taken. My albums My Album allows you to store the pictures as your photo album. Select one of albums. It shows the pictures sav ed in the album. For details about viewing your pictures and using them, see page 105.
Camera 106 Delete all Y ou can dele te all the pho tos saved in each category . 1. Scroll to a photo box and place a check mark ahead it by pressing the Select soft k ey .
Camera 107 Photo quality : allows yo u to se le ct th e im a g e quality from Super fine , Fine , Normal , and Economy . The option you select appears on the top of the display . Shutter sound : allows you to select a sound when you press the shutter , the soft key or the Camer a ( ) key o n the right side of the phone.
108 Messages This menu allows you to create, send, read and save messag e s with the Short Message Service (SMS: text message), Enhanced Message Service (EMS: message including simple image, animation.
Messages 109 T o read the new message(s) immediately , press the View soft key . The list of the messages appears. Note: T o clear the ne w m e ssag e notification on the display , press the key .
