19 Getting to know your phone Antenna The antenna is a device for transmitting and recei ving signals. The shape and size of th e a ntenna is deter mined , in pa rt, b y th e fre quenc y of the s ignal s that they receive. An ant enna makes the call sound clearer when it is fully extend ed.
20 • The lower area of the LCD di splays in-use information, for example, the cal ling p arty ’ s n ame an d nu mber , th e call tim er , Mute a nd C all Waiting, menu s, sub menus, etc . End (p ower o n/off ) key This key is utilized i n several ways: • Press and hold to t urn on your phone.
21 OK/Message key The key stores information that you enter , and also acts as an “OK” button w hen pressed. When in standby mode, functions as a Mail Kit menu access k ey to send messages and review received messages. Speaker The speaker is for listening to voice conversations.
22 Adapto r outle t Use the adaptor outl et to connect your pho ne to a wireless data device or a hands-free car kit (both sold separat ely). The adaptor outlet is lo cated at the bottom of the phon e. • T o charge your batter y , plug the t ravel adaptor that is supplied with your p hone i nto a wal l outl et.
23 Getti ng Star ted Getting servi ce Y ou must contact your service provid er and fo llow their instru ctions for obtaining service for your phone. We s uggest that you read this user guide to fully understan d the services that your phone supports.
24 Several ways to answer a call When you receive a call, the phone will ring and th e phone icon displays on your screen. If the call er can be identifi ed, the calle r’ s phon e number , (or name if pre-stor ed in your Phone Bo ok) displays.

28 Using your phone’s menus Y our phone offers a range of fu nctions that allow you to tailor the phon e to your personal requirements. T hese functions are arranged in menus a nd submenus. The menus and su bmenus can b e accessed by us ing the navigati on key or u sing shortcuts.

30 Your phone’s modes Answer mod e With this opt ion activated, your phone will all ow you to sel ect a spec ific mode when you receive an inco ming call.
31 Silent mode The “Silent Mode” feature allow s you to instantaneousl y silence the ringer when in stan dby mode . • With the phone in standb y mode, press and hold for 2 seconds. “E ntering Silent Mode” displays bri efly . (The si lent mode icon displays on the standby screen.
32 Talk mode Y ou can place and an swer calls only whe n your phone is turned on. When you are on a call your phone is in T al k mode. Pressi ng w ill dis play a list of the In-U se menu optio ns. Whisper mode With this featu re you can have semi-privat e conversations.
33 The top l ine of the display s creen Display indicato rs (or icons) appear across the top of your phon e’ s display screen. The signal strength and battery strength icons will always appear , but other icons di splay based upon you r phone’ s operating mode.
34 Roaming: Th is icon di splays when y our ph one is outside your service provider’ s area and your phone is receiving service from another carrier’ s network. If you are: • In you r ho me se rvic e ar ea, this ind icato r w ill no t di spl ay .
35 High spe ed dat a: This icon indi cates that your phon e is sendin g or receiving data at a high speed. Other phone icons Duplicate: This i con indi cates that a dupli cate message was sent. E-mail: This icon rep resents an e-mai l address. Fax: This icon represents a fax numb er .
36 Using the batter y Note: Y our phone co mes packaged with a partiall y charged, rechargeable standard Li-Ion battery . The phone can be u sed while the battery is charging, but must be fu lly charged the fi rst time you use your phone otherwise the battery could be damaged.
37 Charging the battery Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable standard Li-Ion battery . Onl y use Samsung-approved adaptors and bat teries. These adaptors are designed to maximize battery l ife. Using other ada ptors ma y invalidate yo ur warranty and may cau se damage.
38 Caring for the battery Prot ectin g your batt ery The gu idelin es list ed belo w he lp you g et th e most ou t of yo ur ba ttery’ s performance. • Use only Samsung -approved batteri es and a daptors. These adaptors are desig ned to maximize b attery li fe.
39 Using the travel adaptor The travel adaptor allows you to charge your phone’ s battery from an y 110 vol t AC stan dard wall ou tlet. A lso, u sing the trav el adap tor all ows you t o make a phone call wh ile the battery is chargi ng.
40 Calls Outgoing T o place a c all press to power on your phone. The phone first show s an animated sequence a nd th e icons di scussed ea rlier display , this indi cates your phone is on. ( No dial tone will b e h eard). This is call ed standby mode .
41 Missed Y our phone keeps a list of c alls that you did not answer when the phon e was active and service avai lable. The phone indicat es a missed call by displaying a text n otific ation o n the sc reen.
42 1. In standby mode, press to display the main menu. 2. Press for Calls . • Press the number associat ed with the call log to select an option: • Press for Out goi ng calls. • Press for Incoming calls. • Press for Missed calls . 3. When that call log opti on disp lays, press up or down to locat e the call info rmation you require.

45 Last call Last call allows you to review the amount of time spent on the last call you made. 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu. 2. Press for Calls . 3. Press for Air Tim e . 4. Press for Last Cal l . The amou nt of time sp ent on your last ca ll displays.
46 1. In stand by mode, press to display the main menu. 2. Press for Calls . 3. Press for Air Time . 4. Press for Life Time . The scree n displ ays the tota l numbe r of cal ls made from th is phone , and the total amount o f air t ime used si nce thi s phone was set-up.
47 Phone Book Y our phone permits you to store up to 500 numbers and names in th e Phone Book. Each ent ry can have up to 7 associated ph one numbers and one e-mail address. Each entry can cont ain up to 3 2 digits in cluding hard p auses, with an associated na me of up to 12 charac ters.
48 • Category: A “category” label is associa ted with each pho ne number . For example: Speed Dial, Ho me, Mobile , Office, P ager, Fax , and No Label. • Relation: A “r ela tion ship” label is associated with a group associate d to a number .
49 Adding a name T o add a name to the Phone Book: 1. At the Phone Book (i nformation) screen , press to hi ghlight Name. 2. Press , the Enter name screen displays. Enter a name. 3. Press to sa ve and d isplay the inf ormation in the Name field on the Phon e Book (inf or mat ion ) screen.

51 Adding and changing a ring type T o set a distinc tive ring type to a Phone Book entry: 1. At the Phone Book (informa tion) screen press to highli ght RingTyp e . 2. Press , t he RingType screen displays. Use the navigation key to highlight an o ption.
52 Overwriting existing name and n umber information Y ou can overwrite existing informati on using sep arate actions i n both the name and num ber fie lds.
53 • Edit: Permits editing of the ph one number , name, entry number , category , secret number , relation and ring type. • Prep end: A llows you to prepend a numbe r to either a feature code or area code b efore calli ng. • Erase: Erases the nu mber .
54 Relati on s ear ch This opti on allows yo u to find a stored entry in a relate d group. 1. In stand by mode, press to displ ay the mai n me nu. 2. Press for the Phone Book . 3. Press for Rela tio n. 4. Press left or ri ght to review the Rel atio n groups displayed at the bottom of the screen and see associated names mid screen.

56 Editing an existing e-mail addres s Use this method to edit an existi ng e-mail address. 1. In stand by mode, press to displ ay the mai n me nu. 2. Press for Phone Book . 3. Press for Find Entry . The Phone Book displays. 4. Press to highlight the entry and press .
57 Adding an e-mail address t o an existi ng phone book ent ry Y ou can add an E-mail address to an existing ent ry in the Phone Book , your phone can then send a message via the network se rvice provider to the e-mail address. 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu .
58 Adding pauses When you call au tomated systems (lik e banking services), yo u are often required to ent er a password o r account nu mber . Inst ead of manu ally entering the numbers each time, you can store the numbers in your Phone Boo k separated by special characters called pause s.
59 Storing pauses in a phone book ent ry T o store a number in your Phone Bo ok that conta ins pauses. 1. En ter the phone number you want to store ( such as the bank’s teleservice phone number). 2. Press . The pause menu options disp lay . 3. Press to hi ghlight one of the three pause menu optio ns offered .
60 Pause dialing from a stored e ntry T o pause dial from the Phone Book: 1. If yo u stored the number using ( 2 second) “T” pause (s) , simply call th e number from the Ph one Bo ok.
61 Prepending a phone number The Prepend opti on permits you to add pr efix numbe rs such as area codes and network fe ature activati on codes to phone numb ers that are already stored in your Phone Bo ok or call log. T o Prepend a stored phone number: 1.
62 • Edit • Prep end • Erase • Name Ring • E-mail addr . 6. Press to h ighli ght th e Erase option. Press . T he phon e prompts Yes or No . P ress to your option of cho ice. 7. Press to confirm (Yes) and erase the Phone Book entry , or press to cancel (No) the Erase command and re turn to the Phone Book .
63 Note: If the Caller ID information is unavailable for an incoming call then the Name Ringer option will also be unavailable. 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu .
64 10. Press and Edit Entry appears. 11. Use the keypad to enter the Spe ed dial number of your choice. 12. Press . If you have previously se t a speed dial number for this name or entry an “ Overwrit e? ” prompt will be displayed.
65 Storing phone numbers fr om call logs Use thi s method to sto re a ph one numb er from the c all logs. 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu . 2. Press for Calls . 3. Press for Outgoing , or for Incomin g call activ ity . 4. H ighlight the number that you wish to store to the Phone Book an d press .
66 Two-touch dialing Memory locations 01 0 through 099 are special T wo-T ouch location s. For example, for location number 013 , press and hold down unti l the name and number are displ ayed and called. T o dial the number 100, Three T ouch dialing is required.
67 Web/Minibrow ser Y our phone comes equipped with Wireless Web Internet access through a MiniBrowser . The MiniBrowser displays immediat e information th rough your phone. You can view sp ecially design ed versions of po pular sites w hich includ e sports, weather , news, stock quotes, etc.
68 Note: When the security key is initially sent to the carrier , a unique value is created. If the phone is reset for any reason, you must contact the carrier to reset the security key . The original key is n o longer valid and will n ot allow the MiniBrowser to operate.
69 The minibrowser start and end prompts Y our phone ca n be set to view a prom pt each ti me you start or end a MiniBrow ser session. Y ou have the opti on to change t his defau lt prompt setting . The default setti ng may differ as it is based upon the carrier’ s requirement.
70 • Numbered opt ions (some opt io ns may not be numbered) • Simple text Y ou can act on the opti ons or links by using the soft ke ys. How the mi nibrowse r works Navig atio n key: Use the up /dow n navigation key arrows to find and select from all MiniBrowse r options.

73 Using links Links have se veral purposes , includin g jumpin g to a d iffere nt page, jumping to a different site or even in itiati ng a phone call from some sites. Links are shown inside of brackets ( [ ] ), and you can normally use the left soft key to select a link wh en it is hig hligh ted.
74 Scheduler Information fe atures Information features allow you to add events in a calendar format that can be viewed, and if so required alert you to these same events. How to access i nformation features 1. In stand by mode, press to displ ay the mai n me nu.

76 • Add New: Allows you to add a n event . • Edit: All ows you to edi t an e vent. • Erase: Allows you to erase an event. • Erase all: Allows you to erase all scheduled events. 3. Press to sel ect the option of choice, and comp lete the exercise by follow ing the promp ts.
77 Using jump to date 1. I n standby mode, press for th e menu and Schedule r . Press fo r Jump To Date . C omplete the exercise by using steps 4 through 9 as indi cated in “H ow to schedule an event” on page 75. To do list The T o Do List allows you to compile a list of items to be completed.
78 2. Press for Count Down . The screen prompts for a new Co unt Down . Enter a name for your new Count Down timer . Press to complete . 3. Ent er the date and ti me you w ant to “ Count Down ” to. For example: if today’ s date is April 1, 2001 and you wish t o know how many months, days, and hours remain before 7:00 P .
79 Checking curr ent ti me world wide 1. I n standby mode, press for th e menu and Schedule r . 2. Press for World Ti me . The screen displays a world map. The city , cou ntry , time and date are indicated by a longitude indi cator . You can navigat e up/down , left/right to reach the city an d time yo u need.
80 4. Use t he keypad to enter the second numbe r into your calc ulator . 5. Press to perf orm the calculation and view the result, or con tinue to calculate with the same ope rator , or change th e operator and continue.
81 8. Should you wish to terminat e the alarm fo llow steps 1 th rough 3 and press for Release . Press to save, or press to return to the previous alarm options menu. Note: Once an alarm is set, an alarm clock icon displays on the screen in standby mode.
82 Sounds Ring er o pti ons Y our phone provides a variety of ringer options through the Sounds menu. These options al low you to custo mize y our ringer type and ringe r volume settings in order to easi ly recognize a certain t ype of incoming cal l, message or scheduled e vent.
83 Note: When the lowest volu me setting is reached, th e phone automatically goes into vibrate mode, physically alerting you to this option. Ringer volume — Call s Refer to “Ri nger volume” on page 82 for in structions on ope rating this op tion.

87 Alerts — Conne ct With t his opti on set t o “On”, the pho ne sound s an alert when yo ur call is connected. Refer to “Alerts — Minute beep” on page 86 for i nstructio ns on how to operate thi s option.
88 Voice volu me This option enables you to adjust the voice volume of the earpiece while on a call. T he disp lay ico n show s up to 5 le vels ( the lou dest sett ing). T o adjust th e voice volume l evel: 1. In stand by mode, press to displ ay the mai n me nu.
89 T o set the Power On/O ff alert: 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu . 2. Press for Sounds . 3. Press for Power On/Off . 4. Press th e t o choose between On or Off . 5. When the desired setting is reached, press to save the setting.
90 Display The following fea tures offe red under the Display menu allo w you to customize your phone. • Control w hen, a nd for h ow long , your backli ght is active. • Define a persona l greeting of up to 12 characters. • Display your ow n phone number .
91 Banner This optio n allows you to edi t and persona lize the banner displa yed on the standby display screen. Note: Enter the personal greetin g using the keypad, Press for T9 Wor d, AB C, symbo ls.

94 Menu Style Y ou can view your me nu two differen t ways: • Horizo ntal • V ertical The horizont al view is the default view . Us ing th is vie w , th e menu select ion and associated icons appear hori zontally as you scroll t hrough the main menu.
95 Voice d ial Y our phone features Voice Dial(ing). Y ou can call up to 20 stored names simply by speaking one of the names into the micro phone. Using t he V oice Dialing feature requires that you first program the phon e to recognize the name of the person you are calling.
96 4. Wait for the beep and then say the na me. For best results, use names with at le ast two syl labl es, or use bot h a first an d last name. The ph one store s the name as a “first” sample, and then prompts you to say the name again. 5. Resp ond to th e prompt by rep eating the name exactly as you did the first time.
97 Erase all T o erase al l voice calling entries: 1. I n standby mode, press to display the main menu . 2. Press for Voice Dial . 3. Press for Erase All . 4. At the voi ce prompt and screen prom pt, press to confirm that you wish to Erase Al l of the e ntries.
98 Games Y our phone’ s soft ware allow s you t o play the f ollowing games: • Flyi ng Tight • Ru n for Money • Ra cing Note: Games are also available o n-line by launching your minibrowser .
99 Object The object of the game is to fly the plane inside a cave through a maze of obstacles for the longest possible time. Use th e navigation key to control and sustain the plane’s flight path and avoid the cave’ s wall.

101 Setup The foll owing features allow you to personal ize your phone . Auto re try With this optio n activat ed, you r phone automati cally retries th e call when a connection fails. Dependent upon you r lo cation, the number of retrys may vary . T o enable Auto Re try .
102 4. Use to hi ghlight an o ption. The op tions are: By SEND key , and By any k ey. 5. Press to save your o ption . 6. Pressi ng ret urns you to the previous screen. Tone length Some older phones recogniz e only longer tones. Theref ore you may have to change the tone length for some calls.
103 Data/fax Y our phone i s capable o f sending and receivi ng digital data and fax ca lls when connected to a comput ing device (laptop, deskt op, hand held, pal mtop, etc.) running Windo ws 95, Window s 98, Windows 2000, Win dows ME, or Windows NT .
104 Receivi ng a fax 1. In stand by mode, press to displ ay the mai n me nu. 2. Press for Setup . 3. Press for Data /F ax . 4. Use to highlight fax for ne xt call. 5. Press to save this opti on. In the Fax program on your PC set up Answer Mode . Click on “Receive” and select either Automati c Rece ive (reco mm en ded ), or Manual Receive .
