Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 Removing the SIM or USIM car d 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out. 3 Close the cov er of the SIM card slot. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time.
Getting star ted 12 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 13 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 14 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 15 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 16 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 17 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .

Basics 20 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 25 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 26 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause .
Basics 27 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 28 Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold . The Multi Windo w tray appears at the right side of the screen.
Basics 29 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location. Y ou can launch the same application in a split screen at the same time. Only applications with next to its icon suppor t this fea ture .

Basics 39 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view .
Basics 40 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → General → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap Enable .

Basics 42 Entering upper case T ap Shift befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap Caps lock . Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . On the floating keyboard , tap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another location.
Basics 43 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 44 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 45 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 46 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 47 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. Basics 48 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 49 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
50 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Phone : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Groups : Make a call from the list of contact groups .
Communication 51 Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears. Enter the country code, ar ea code, and phone number , and then tap . During a call The f ollowing actions are available: • : Switch t o a Bluetooth headset if it is connected to the device .
Communication 52 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . V iewing call logs T ap Phone to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → Vi ew , and then select an option.
Communication 53 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, drag the reject message bar upwar ds. T o cr eate the r ejection message, tap → Call settings → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 54 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera. • Mute : T ur n off the microphone so tha t the other par ty cannot hear you.
Communication 55 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 56 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Settings → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remo ve a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 57 Displaying c ontac ts T ap Con tacts . By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts. T ap → Settings → Con tacts to display , and then select a location where contacts are save d. Moving con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Communication 59 • Send message : Send a message to a group ’ s members. • Send email : Send an email to a group ’ s members. • Change order : T ap and hold next to the group name , drag it up or down to another position, and then tap Done .
Communication 60 Sending messages T ap , add recipients , enter a message, and then tap . Use the f ollowing methods to add r ecipients: • Enter a phone number .
Communication 61 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 62 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Change the screen lay out. Reply to the message. F or ward the message.
Communication 63 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach file to attach images , videos, music , and others.
Communication 64 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. Selec t a label in ALL LABELS to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 65 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
66 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 67 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 68 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a keyword, and then select one of the suggested keywords tha t appear .
W eb & network 69 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 70 e -Meeting Use this application to host or a ttend an e -meeting. Y ou can share files with attendees during a meeting. T o use this application, all devic es to be used in the meeting must be connected to the same access point .
W eb & network 71 3 Check the network information to shar e with others, set details for the meeting , and then tap Done . T o add files to the meeting , tap . Use a passwor d. Check the network information to shar e with others. Meeting information Set a password and the security level f or the meeting.

W eb & network 84 Closing or exiting the meeting T ap → End meeting or Lea ve meeting . When the netw ork connection fails during a meeting If the meeting is still running, rec onnect to the meeting. If the meeting has ended, restart the meeting.

97 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 98 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 99 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 106) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 100 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 101 • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving subjects in the background . T ap to take a series of photos . The device er ases traces of mov ement from a moving subject. T o rest ore the original photo , tap , and then tap the highlighted ar ea.
Media 102 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap .
Media 103 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 104 Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 105 • Save as : Set the device to sav e both the r ich tone photo and orig inal photo , or only the rich tone photo . • V ideo stabilisation : Activate or deactivate an ti-shake. Anti-shake helps f ocus when the camera is moving . • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo .
Media 106 Shor tcuts Reorganise shor tcuts f or easy access to the camera ’ s various options . T ap and tap and hold a shor tcut icon. T ap and hold an option and drag it to a slot a t the top of the screen. Galler y Use this application to view images and videos .
Media 107 V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature t o execut e a function with par ticular motion. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Con trols → Motions , drag the Motions switch to the right, and then turn on the switch f or each featur e.
