Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 12 U sing a memor y card Installing a memor y card Y our device acc epts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 128 GB. Depending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device .
Getting star ted 13 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 T urning the devic e on and off Pr ess and hold the Po wer button f or a few seconds to turn on the device . When you turn on y our device f or the first time or after per forming a data reset, f ollow the on- screen instructions to set up your devic e.
Getting star ted 15 L ock ing and unlock ing the screen Pr essing the Po wer button turns off the scr een and locks it. Also , the screen turns off and automatically locks if the device is not used f or a specified period.
16 Basics U sing the touch scr een • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • T o av oid damaging the touch scr een, do not tap it with anything sharp or apply ex cessive pr essure to it with your fingertips.
Basics 17 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item or the screen f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o move an it em, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in.
Basics 18 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pps screen to see another panel . Flick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list of items , such as contacts. Spreading and pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 Home screen la y out Home screen The Home screen is the starting point for acc essing all of the device’ s featur es. The Home screen has two diff erent k inds of panels. The Classic Home screen panel display s widgets, shor tcuts to apps , and more, and the Con tent Home scr een panel displays C ontent widgets.
Basics 20 Apps scr een The Apps scr een displays ic ons for all apps , including newly installed apps. On the Home screen, tap to open the Apps scr een. T o view other panels, scr oll left or right, or select a screen indicator at the bottom of the scr een.
Basics 21 Indicator ic ons Indicator icons appear on the status bar at the t op of the screen. T he icons listed in the table below are most c ommon. The status bar ma y not appear at the top of the scr een in some apps. T o display the status bar , drag down from the top of the scr een.
Basics 22 Notifications and quick setting panels Using the notifica tions panel When you r eceive new notifications, such as messages , indicator icons appear on the status bar . T o see more information about the icons , open the notifications panel and view the details.
Basics 23 Rearranging quick setting butt ons T o rearrange quick setting buttons on the notifica tions panel, tap → , tap and hold an item, and then drag the item t o another location. Using the quick setting panel Y ou can ac tivate or deactivate some f eatures on the notifications panel.

Basics 25 Opening apps On the Home screen or the Apps scr een, selec t an app icon to open it. T o open the list of recen tly-used apps, tap and select an app icon to open. Closing an app T ap → T ask manager , and then tap End next to an app to close it.
Basics 26 Pla y Stor e Use this app to pur chase and download apps. T ap Play St ore on the Apps screen. Installing apps Brow se apps by categor y or tap to sear ch for a keyword . Selec t an app to view inf or mation about it. T o download free apps , tap INST ALL .
Basics 27 Enabling apps On the Apps screen, tap → Show disabled apps , select apps, and then tap Done . Alternativ ely , on the Apps screen, tap Settings → Applications → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select an app, and then tap Enable .
Basics 28 Changing the input language T ap → Selec t input languages , and then select the languages to use. If you select two or more languages , you can switch between the input languages b y sliding the space key lef t or right. Using additional k eyboard func tions T ap and hold to use various functions.

On the Apps screen, tap Settings → General → P ower saving , and then tap the Pow e r saving mode switch to activate it. A lternatively , open the quick setting panel and tap Pow e r saving to activate it.

Network connectivit y 35 Adding Wi - Fi networks If the desired network does not appear in the Wi-F i networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the list. Ent er the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passw ord if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Network connectivit y 36 T o view the toolbars, dr ag your finger downwar ds slightly on the screen. Open the homepage. Close the tab . Move to the previously-visit ed page. Book mark the current webpage . Open a new tab . Read an ar ticle in reading mode .
37 Motions & usabilit y f eatur es Motions Exc essive shaking or impac t on the device ma y result in unintended inputs . Control motions properly . Mute/P ause On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → Motions , and then tap the Mute/P ause switch to activate it.
Motions & usability features 38 Smar t pause Playback pauses aut omatically when you look a way fr om the screen. It resumes when you look at the screen again. T ap Mute/P ause → Smar t pause . P alm swipe to capture On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → Motions , and then tap the P alm swipe to capture switch to activate it.
Motions & usability features 39 Multi window About Multi windo w Use this f eature t o run two apps on the screen at the same time . Y ou can use this featur e to view emails or use the Internet while you play a video simultaneously .
Motions & usability features 40 3 T ap and hold an app icon to launch from the Multi windo w tray , and then drag it t o the screen. Release the app icon when the screen turns blue . 4 T ap and hold another app icon on the Multi window tray , and then drag it to a new location.
Motions & usability features 41 Adjusting the windo w size Drag the circle between the app windo ws lef t or right to adjust the size of the windo ws. Using Multi windo w options When you use Multi windo w apps, select the app window and a blue frame will appear around it.

P ersonalising 50 Setting wallpaper and ringtones Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Classic Home screen or the locked screen. 1 On the Classic Home screen, tap and hold an empty area, and then tap W allpapers .
P ersonalising 51 Changing the scr een lock method Y ou can change the way that you lock the scr een to prevent others fr om accessing your personal information. On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock , and then select a screen lock method .
P ersonalising 52 P assword A passwor d consists of characters and numbers. En ter at least f our characters including numbers and symbols, and then ent er the passwor d again to verify it.
P ersonalising 53 Registering fingerprints 1 On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → F inger S canner → F ingerprint manager . 2 If you are r egistering more fingerprints , a finger print rec ognition pop-up window appears. Scan a reg istered fingerprint on the devic e and tap .
P ersonalising 54 Managing reg ister ed fingerprints Y ou can delete or rename your r egistered fingerprints. On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → F inger S canner → F ingerprint manager . T o delete fingerprints, tap → Deregist er , select fingerpr ints , and then tap → OK .
P ersonalising 55 Using fingerprin ts for purchases via P ayP al Y ou can make purchases by scanning your fingerprints . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . 1 On the Apps screen, tap Settings → Device → F inger S canner → P ay with P ayP al .
P ersonalising 56 3 T o select items to hide, tap and hold an item in the list , tick items to select, and then tap → Move to Pri vate . Items that are mov ed to private mode appear with on them.

Contacts 62 3 Place a business car d on the flat sur face. 4 Adjust the devic e to fit the card inside the fr ames on the screen. When the frames turn green, the devic e automatically takes a photo . The device also r eads the contac t information fr om the business card and conv er ts it to a contact entr y .
Contacts 63 Managing gr oups On the Apps screen, tap Con tacts → Groups . Crea ting a new group T ap , ent er a group name, and then tap S ave . Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap → Add member . Selec t contacts to add , and then tap Done .
Contacts 64 Searching f or con tac ts On the Apps screen, tap Con tacts → Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Drag a finger along the index at the left side of the contacts list to scroll thr ough it quickly .
65 C amera Basic shooting T aking photos or rec ording videos 1 T ap Camer a on the Apps screen. 2 T ap the image on the preview screen wher e the camera should focus. When the subject is in focus, the f ocus frame turns green. 3 T ap to take a phot o or tap t o recor d a video.
Camera 66 • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean. Other wise, the device may not w ork properly in some modes that requir e high resolutions. • The fron t camera lens is suitable f or tak ing wide -angle photos.
Camera 67 Remote viewfinder Use your devic e as a viewfinder for another device. Y ou can control the other devic e remotely to take photos or videos fr om a distance. Y our device displays the same image tha t is display ed on the connected device. 1 T ap Camer a on the Apps screen.
Camera 68 Shooting modes Au to Use this mode to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o . On the Apps screen, tap Camer a → MODE → Aut o . Beauty face Use this mode to take a phot o with lightened faces f or gentler images.
Camera 69 • Best face : T ake multiple group shots at the same time and c ombine them to crea te the best possible image. T ap the white frame on each face and choose the best individual pose for each subject from the poses that appear a t the bottom of the screen.
Camera 70 HDR (Rich tone) Use this mode to take phot os with rich colours and repr oduce details even in bright and dark areas . On the Apps screen, tap Camer a → MODE → HDR (Rich tone) .
Camera 71 • Y ou can record videos in dual camer a mode for up to 5 minut es in F ull HD and up to 10 minutes in HD or VGA. • While rec ording videos in this mode , sound is recorded by the in ternal microphone . Managing shooting modes Selec t the shooting modes to appear on the mode selection screen.
Camera 72 • F ace det ec tion : Set the device to rec ognise people’ s faces and help you take phot os of them. • ISO : Selec t an ISO value . This con trols camera light sensitivity . It is measured in film- camera equivalents . Low values ar e for stationary or brightly-lit objec ts.
Camera 73 • Stor age location : Selec t the memor y location f or storage . • Review pics/videos : Set the device to show phot os or videos after capturing them. • Remote viewfinder : Set the device to use as a viewfinder and contr ol the other device to take photos or rec ord videos.

When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
