Getting Started 5 Activating your de vice If you purchased your device at a Verizon Wireless store, it is activated and ready to use. If you received a new device by mail, it may need to be activa ted before you can use it. T o activate your device, choose from the following: • Visit a V erizon Wireless store.
6 Charging the Batter y Y our devi ce comes with a Wall /USB Charger (Out let Connector , Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard AC power outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the batter y before using your device for the first time.

8 Y our Google Account Y our new device uses your Goog le account to f ully utilize its Android features, including Gmail, Ma ps, Naviga tion, Google T alk and the Android Market. When you turn on your device for the first time, set up a connect ion with your existi ng Google account, or create a new Googl e account.
Getting Started 9 T ask Manager Y our device can run a pplicatio ns simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your device, and to end runni ng applications to ex tend battery life.
10 Memor y Car d Y our device supports removabl e microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards, for storage of m usic, pictures, vi deos, and other files. Note: Y ou can only store music files that you own (from a CD or purchased with the device) on a memory card.

Applications that you do wnload and install f rom the Android Market or from the we b are also added to the Applications screen. Y ou can place shortcuts to applic ations on the Home screen, for quick access to the application.
26 Browser : Access the Internet. By default, a shortcut to Browser appears on the Home screen a s a Primary Shortcut. For more information, see “Browser” on page 53. Calendar : Record events and appointm ents to manage your schedule. F o r more information, see “Calendar” on page 87.

Contacts and Accounts 29 Section 3: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage cont acts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. Wi th synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that cha nges in your accounts.
30 Setting Up a Facebook account Note: Y ou must register your device with your social networking site before using the device to access the network. 1. From a Ho me screen, press the Menu Key ➔ Settings ➔ Accounts and sync ➔ Add account ➔ Facebook .

34 Sending N amecards Sending a Namecard ( vCard) Y ou can send contact namec ards as a vCards via Bluetoot h to other Bluetooth devices, or via Em ail or Gmail as an att achment. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.

If your device is lost , stolen or damaged, Backup Assist ant can restore your saved contacts to a new device, wirelessly . 40 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype is a new way to enter te xt on touch screens. Instead of touching each key , use your finger to trace over ea ch letter of a word. For each word, place your fing er o n the first letter an d glide to the subsequent letters, li fting on the last letter .

42 Entering T ext Using the Samsung K eypad The Samsung Keypad is a cust om virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input characters by tapping the on- screen keys with your finge r , or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive te xt ma tches your key touches to common words and displays them.

46 – Roaming auto-retrieve : T ouch to enable or disable automatic retrieval of MMS messages when in Roaming mode. When enabled, MMS messages download and display automatically.
