Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .

16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 19 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 20 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . Rotating the scr een Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation.
Basics 21 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 22 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 23 2 T ap and hold an application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to the scr een. Release the application icon when the screen turns blue . 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 24 Sharing con tent betw een applications Y ou can easily share content between applica tions, such as Email and Internet , by dragg ing and dropping them. Some applications may not suppor t this f eature . 1 Launch Email and Internet in a split screen Multi W indow .
Basics 25 3 T ap and hold an item in the Internet window and drag it t o a location in the Email window . Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more .

Basics 28 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. Basics 30 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → General → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap Enable .

Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards .
Basics 33 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to selec t more or less t ext, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap → P aste .
Basics 34 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 35 Setting up user profiles Set up user profiles and then select one when unlock ing the device to use personalised settings. By setting up multiple user profiles , several users can share the devic e without affecting others’ personal settings , such as email accounts , wallpaper prefer ences, and more .
Basics 36 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 37 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 38 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
39 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 40 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts T ap Con tacts . By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts. T ap → Settings → Con tacts to display , and then select a location where contacts are save d.
Communication 41 Expor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option. Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share namecar d via → Multiple contacts , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. F av ourite con tac ts T ap F av ourites .
Communication 42 Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the f ollowing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Done . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Edit : Change the group settings .
Communication 43 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 44 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 45 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 46 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. Selec t a label in ALL LABELS to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 47 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .

W eb & network 49 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap , and then select one. Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap .

W eb & network 51 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. Use Bluetooth to ex change data or media files with other devices. • Samsung is not responsible f or the loss, int erception, or misuse of da ta sent or receiv ed via the Bluetooth featur e.
W eb & network 52 Screen Mirroring Use this f eature t o connect your device to a lar ge screen with an AllShar e Cast dongle or HomeSync and then shar e your cont ents. Y ou can also use this featur e with other devices that suppor t the Wi-F i Miracast featur e.
53 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 54 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 55 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 60) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 56 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 57 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video. T o pause recor ding, tap . T o st op recor ding, tap . Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. Recor ding mode Select among various effects that are a vailable.
Media 58 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .

Utilities 70 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.
Utilities 71 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.

Settings 84 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .

T roubleshooting 100 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
