Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 Removing the SIM or USIM car d 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out. 3 Close the cov er of the SIM card slot. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time.
Getting star ted 12 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 13 Checking the batter y charge status When you char ge the batter y while the device is off , the following ic ons will show the current battery charge status: Charging F ully charged Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er .
Getting star ted 14 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 15 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 16 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 17 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
18 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 20 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen.
Basics 25 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 26 Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold . The Multi Windo w tray appears at the right side of the screen.
Basics 27 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location. Sharing con tent betw een applications Y ou can easily share content between applica tions, such as Email and Internet , by dragg ing and dropping them.
Basics 28 2 T ap the circle between the applica tion windows , and then tap . T ap the circle between applica tion windows to ac cess the following options: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions. • : Share items , such as images, text, or links, between application windo ws by dragging and dr opping them.
Basics 29 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 30 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 31 Removing a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen. Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen.
Basics 32 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view .
Basics 33 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it.
Basics 34 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . T ap → T ask manager , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications, tap End all . Alternativ ely , tap → Close all .
Basics 35 Using the Samsung ke yboard Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter punctuation marks. Enter uppercase . Set options for the Samsung keyboard. Enter a space . Enter uppercase . Add an item fr om the clipboard. Suggested keywords Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter .
Basics 36 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Use handwriting gestures t o per form actions, such as editing or deleting characters and inser ting spaces.
Basics 37 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 96) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 38 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 39 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices .
Basics 40 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 41 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
42 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Phone : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Groups : Make a call from the list of contact groups .
Communication 43 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 44 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap → Add t o contacts . Sending a message T ap → Send message to send a message to the number on displa y . F ixed dialling number The device can be set t o restrict outgoing calls only to numbers with specified prefix es.
Communication 45 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be answ ered. When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle.
Communication 46 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Call settings → Additional settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Ent er a number and tap Enable .
Communication 47 T ap your image t o access the f ollowing options: • Hide me : Hide your image from the other part y . • Outgoing image : Selec t an image to sho w it to the other par ty . Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images .
Communication 48 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 49 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 50 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option.
Communication 51 C ontac t groups T ap Groups . Crea ting a group T ap , set details for the group , add contacts, and then tap S ave . Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap → Add member . Selec t contacts to add , and then tap Done .
Communication 52 Business card T ap Con tacts . Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card, and then tap to edit.
Communication 53 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduling . Set a time and date, and then tap OK . The device will send the message at the specified time and dat e. • If the device is turned off at the scheduled time, is not connected to the network, or the network is unstable, the message will not be sent.
Communication 54 Sending messages T ap the email accoun t to use, and then tap at the top of the scr een. Enter recipients , subject, and message, and then tap . T ap to add a recipien t from the con tacts list. T ap +Me to add yourself as a r ecipient.
Communication 55 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Go to the previous or next message. Delete the message. Compose a message .
Communication 56 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 57 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Delete the message. Keep the message for long-term storage . Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Move the message to another mailbox. Reply to all recipients or print the message. F or ward the message to others.
Communication 58 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .

W eb & network 61 Histor y T ap → Book marks → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages . T o clear the hist or y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Book marks → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 62 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key wor d, and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear .
W eb & network 63 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
64 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. Pla ying music Selec t a music category , and then selec t a song to play . T ap the album image at the bottom of the scr een to open the music player scr een.
Media 65 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 66 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 71) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 67 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 68 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video .
Media 69 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 70 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set a device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 71 • Guidelines : Display viewfinder guides to help c omposition when selecting subjec ts. • V oice con trol : Set the camera to take photos with v oice commands . • Con textual filename : Set the camera to display c ontextual tags.

Media 74 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es When viewing an image, tap → Settings → T ags , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the r ecognised face .

Settings 97 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
Settings 98 F light mode This disables all wireless functions on your devic e. Y ou can use only non-network services. Data usage Keep track of your da ta usage amount, and customise the settings f or the limitation. • Mobile data : Set the device to use data connections on any mobile network.
