Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards.
Getting star ted 11 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 12 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 13 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 14 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 15 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 16 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
17 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 18 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 19 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 21 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motions and gestures , and then drag the Motions and gestures switch to the right.
Basics 22 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e.
Basics 23 • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode. • Multi window : Set to use Multi Window . • W i-Fi hotspot : Activate or deactivate the Wi-F i tethering featur e. • Hands-free mode : Activate or deactivate hands-fr ee mode.
Basics 24 Adding an it em Cust omise the Home screen by adding widgets , folders, or pages . T ap and hold the empty area on the Home screen, and then select one of the follo wing categories: • Apps and widgets : Add widgets or applications t o the Home screen.
Basics 25 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 26 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 27 Rearranging applica tions T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new loca tion. T o mov e it to another panel, drag it t o the side of the screen. Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience .

Basics 30 C onnec ting to a Wi - Fi network Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. Basics 31 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 32 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media libraries , contacts, and calendars, and syncs them with Samsung devices . D ownload the lat est S amsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 33 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 34 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
35 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 36 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 37 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → Vi ew , and then select an option.
Communication 38 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle . If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle .
Communication 39 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Call settings → Additional settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Ent er a number and tap Enable .
Communication 40 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 41 Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Impor t from SIM card , Impor t from SD card or Impor t from USB storage . Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card or Expor t to USB storage .
Communication 42 Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Edit : Change the group settings . • Create : Make a new group . • Remov e member : Remove members fr om the group .
Communication 43 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 44 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen.
Communication 45 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 46 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 47 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 48 Photos Use this application to shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vice. T ap Photos on the Applications screen.
49 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 50 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 51 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 52 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 53 Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , tap , selec t files, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Managing con tents on a w eb storage server Selec t a web st orage ser ver , and then view and manage your files .
54 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 55 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . Smar t volume may not be activated f or some files. When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el.
Media 56 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. ( p. 62 ) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission.
Media 57 Scene mode Pr edefined settings make point-and-shoot photos easier to take . T ap → Scene mode . • Landscape : Use this setting to take phot os of blue sk ies and landscapes with richer colours. • P ar ty/Indoor : Use this setting f or well-lit indoor scenes .
Media 58 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap → Shooting mode → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in any direction. When two panorama guide frames are aligned, the camer a automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 59 Recor ding mode Change recor ding mode. Use this for delayed-time shots . Select among various effects that are available . Determine how much light the camera ’ s sensor receiv es. Change the white balance setting . Change the camera settings.
Media 60 Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution.
Media 61 • Resolution : Selec t a resolution. U se higher resolution f or higher qualit y . But it takes up more memory . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are desig ned for specific lighting situa tions.

Media 63 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • Photo fr ame : Use this to add a frame and a not e to an image.
Media 64 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap t o send them to others. • When viewing an image, tap t o send it to others or share it via social network ser vices.

Utilities 72 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T o edit the memo , tap the memo . T o delete the memo , tap → Delete . T o change the backgr ound colour , tap → Colour . T o set a PIN to lock or unlock the memo , tap → Lock .
Utilities 73 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 74 Changing calendar type T ap the top left of the screen, and then select one from among diff erent types of calendars including month, week, and others.

Settings 88 Setting Wi - Fi sleep polic y On the Settings screen, tap Wi - Fi → → Adv anced → Keep Wi-F i on during sleep . When the screen is turned off , the device automatically turns off Wi-F i connections. When this happens, the devic e automatically accesses data networks if it is set to use them.
Settings 89 T o use mor e options, tap . • Data roaming : Set the device to use data connections when you ar e roaming. • Restric t backgr ound data : Set the device to disable sync in the backgr ound while using a mobile network. • Aut o sync data : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications.
Settings 90 T ethering and por table hotspot • P or table Wi-F i hotspot : Use the por table W i-F i hotspot to share the device ’ s mobile network connection with computers or other devices thr ough the Wi-F i network . • USB tethering : Use USB tethering to shar e the device’ s mobile network connection with a computer via USB .
Settings 91 Block ing mode Selec t which notifications will be blocked or set to allo w notifications for calls from specified contacts in block ing mode. Hands-free mode Set the device to read c ontents aloud and specify applications to use in hands-free mode .

Settings 96 L ock screen Change settings for the locked scr een. • Screen lock : Activate the scr een lock feature . • Multiple widgets : Set the device to allow use of widgets on the locked scr een. • Lock scr een widgets : These settings ar e applied only when you set the swipe lock option.
Settings 97 Securit y Change settings for securing the device . • Encr ypt device : Set a password t o encr ypt data sav ed on the device. Y ou must enter the passwor d each time you turn on the device . Charge the batt er y befor e enabling this setting because it may take more than an hour to encr ypt your da ta.

Settings 102 Dat e and time Ac cess and alter the f ollowing settings to control ho w the device displays the time and date . If the batter y remains fully discharged or r emoved from the devic e, the time and dat e is reset. • Aut omatic date and time : Aut omatically update the time and dat e when moving across time zones .

T roubleshooting 106 The t ouch screen r esponds slowly or improperly • If you attach a prot ective cov er or optional accessories to the t ouch screen, the touch screen ma y not function properly .
T roubleshooting 107 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
T roubleshooting 108 Y our device is hot to the t ouch When you use applica tions that requir e more power or use applications on y our device for an extended period of time, your devic e may f eel hot to the touch. This is normal and should not affect your device ’ s lif espan or per formanc e.
T roubleshooting 109 • Y our device suppor ts photos and videos captured with the device . Photos and videos captured by other devic es may not work properly . • Y our device suppor ts multimedia files that are authorised by your network service provider or pr oviders of additional ser vices.
T roubleshooting 110 Data stor ed on the device has been lost Alway s make backup copies of all impor tant data stor ed on the device. Other wise, you cannot restor e data if it is corrupted or lost. Samsung is not responsible f or the loss of data stored on the devic e.
