Using the Control Panel 3. 2 Buttons Button Descript ion (sta tus map) When a paper jam occurs, a lamp turns on at the corresponding loca tion on the Stat us map so that you can locate the paper jam. The display on the control panel also shows the corresponding error message, indicating the location of the jam.

Using Prin t Ma ter ials 4. 2 N OTE : Do not use carb onless pa per or traci ng pape r . These types of paper are unstable at the fusing t emperature and can give o ff fumes, or cause damage to th e printer . Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 4 Replacing Toner Cartridges The printe r uses four colors and has a differe nt toner cartri dge for e ach o ne : yell ow (Y), m age nta (M ), cy an (C ), and black (K ).
Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 5 6 Place the toner cartridge on a flat surface, as shown, and remove the paper covering the toner cartri dge by removing the t ape. N OTE : If toner gets on your clot hing, wip e it off with a dry cloth and w ash i t in cold wa ter .
Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 6 3 Locate the green release b utton on the inside of the acce ss door (ne ar the l eft si de of the paper transfer b elt). Press the butto n to release the p aper transfe r belt. Holding the handle o n the paper transfer belt, lift it out of th e printer .
Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 7 Replacing the Fuser U nit The life of the fuser unit is appro ximately 50,00 0 black and color pa ges. W hen the life s pan of th e fuser unit has exp ired, the pri nter will stop p rinting unti l a new fuser unit i s placed into the printe r .
Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 8 Cleaning the Printer During the pr inting proce ss, particl es of paper , toner , and dust can accumulate i nside the p r inter . Over time, this bu i ld-up can cause print quality problems such as toner specks or smearing .
Maintai ning Your Pr inter 6. 9 6 Grasp the handles on each t oner cartrid ge. Align the toner cartridges with the sl ots inside the printe r and insert them into their corr espo nding posi tions i n the fol lowing o rder: Y ellow , Magenta, Cyan, and then Black, until they click into pla ce.

The paper size and the paper size settin gs do not match. Ens ure tha t the p aper siz e in th e printer dr iver settings matches the paper in the tray .
Solvin g Prob lems 7. 4 Clearing Paper Jams N OTE : When r emo ving paper that is jamme d in the printer , if possible al wa ys pull t he paper in the di rection t hat it normally move s so as not to dam age internal comp onents. Alw ays pull firml y and evenl y; do not jer k the pap er .
Solvin g Prob lems 7. 5 3 Pull the tr ay ope n. After you pull it all the wa y out, lift up the front par t of the tr ay slightly to release the tr ay from the printe r . 4 Rem ove t he jammed p aper by gentl y pul ling i t straig ht out as shown below .
Solvin g Prob lems 7. 6 C AUTION : • Do n ot touch the gree n surface, the OPC d rum, on the fr ont of each toner cart ridge wit h your hands or any other material. Use the handle on each cartr idge in ord er to avoid touching thi s area. • Be careful no t to scratch the surface of the paper tran sfer belt .

After you pull it al l the way out, lift up the fr ont part o f the tray slightly to release the tra y from the printe r . 11 If you see t he jammed pa per , rem ove the paper from the printer by gently pulling i t straight out as shown below .
Solvin g Prob lems 7. 12 15 Close the access door firmly . The printe r will resume print ing. C AUTION : If the top cover and access do or are not co mpletely closed, the printe r will not ope rate. Tips for Avoiding P aper Jams By selecting the correct paper types, most paper jams can be avoided.
Solvin g Prob lems 7. 13 Vertical lines If black vertical st reaks appear on the page: • A toner cartridge has probably been scra t ched. Rem ove the toner cart ridge and install a new one. See page 6.4. If white vertical l ines appear on the page: • Cl ean the in side of the pri nter .
