5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by fi rst configuring your hardware, activating your service, and then setting up your voice mail.
Getting Started 6 3. Lift and remove the bottom port of the back cover (as shown). 4. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket until the car d locks into place . Make sure that the card ’ s gold contacts face into the phone and that the upper-left angled corner of the card is positioned as shown.
7 Re moving the Batter y 5. Lift and remo ve the battery (as shown). Inst allin g the Memor y Car d Y our phone supports an optional memory card (microSD™) for data storage of su ch things as music, pictures, video or other files. This type of memory card is designed for use with th is mobile phone and other devices.
Getting Started 8 2. Replace the ba tter y: • (1) Slide t he batter y back into the phone so th at the tabs on the end al ign with the sl ots at the b ottom of the p hone.
9 3. Reinstall the bottom (silver) portion of the battery cover by sliding it back onto the phone. 4. Close the top (black) port ion of the batter y cover until you hear a li ght click (as shown). Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone.
Getting Started 10 Char ging a B atter y Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li-ion batter y . A travel ada pter , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only ap proved ba tteries and chargers. Ask yo ur local Samsu ng de aler for further details.
11 2. Plug the adapter’ s power plug into a standard AC wall outlet. 3. When charging is finished, fi rst unplug the adapter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet an d then d isconnect the wall charger’ s conn ector from the phone. Note: Failure to unplug the wall charger before you remove the battery , can cause the phone to become dama ged.
Getting Started 12 Setting Up Y our Voice Mail For new users, follow the instru ctions below to set up voice mail: 1. In Idle mode, touch the Phone icon and touch Voice ma il . Y ou may be prompted to enter a password. 2. Follow th e tutorial to c reate a pa ssword, a greeting, and your name.

15 3. Display shows all the info rmation needed to operate your phone, such as th e received signal strength, phone battery level, date, and time. 4. Send key allows yo u to make or answer a ca ll. Press and hold to dial the la st contact entered. 5. Back key when pressed, redispla ys the previous s c reen.
Understanding Y our Phone 16 2. Power/Accessory Interf ace connector allows you to connect a power cable or optional accessories such as a USB/data cable or a hands-free headse t for convenient, hands-free conversations. 3. Cell phone strap used to connect a carrying strap to the phone.
17 Display Layout Y our display scr een provides a weal th of information ab out the phone’ s status and opti ons. The display has 4 areas: Widget Bar The Widget Bar provides quick access to the ite.
Understanding Y our Phone 18 Displays when you are out of your service area. Displays the level of your batter y . The more bars you see, the more po wer you have remaining. Displays while connecting to the 3G network. Displays when a new text message is received.
19 Backligh t A backlight illumi nates the internal display and the keypad. When yo u touch any key , the backl ight turns on. Backlight turns off when no keys ar e pressed or touched with in a given period of time, depending on the Backlight menu setting.
Understanding Y our Phone 20 Help Help uses the Web to display some of th e unique features of your phone. Y ou ca n search help files on the fly while traveling, at home or anywhe re, using help.wap.t-mobile.com. 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Help .
21 Section 3: Call Functions This section de scribes how to ma ke or answer a call. It also explai ns the features and functio nality assoc iated with making or answer ing a call. F or more information, refer to “Call Settings” on page 152. For m ore inf ormati on, ref er to “Call Settings” on pa ge 152.
Call Functions 22 Re dialing the Last Number The phone stores the numbers of the calls you’ve diale d, received, or missed if th e caller is id entified.
23 Options During a Call Y our phone provides a number of control f unctions that are av ailable for use during a call. T ur ni ng the Speakerp hone on a nd of f While on a ca ll, you can use your Sp eakerphone by fol lowing these steps: 1. T ouch t he Spkr on icon to turn the speakerphone on.
Call Functions 24 Viewing the Call log During a call you can touch the Call log icon to view All c alls, Missed calls, Outgoing call s, or Incoming calls. This feature might be useful if during a call you want to j oin another contact to a multiparty call.
25 Accessing the Contacts List During a Call Y ou can search for a number in Contacts during a call. 1. T ouch t he Ph.book icon to access the Contact lists. 2. T ouch when you are finished. Ending a Call 1. Briefly press the ke y to end the call . – or – 2.
Call Functions 26 T o view a missed call immedia tely: 1. If the displa y is off, press t he volume ke y to turn the display on. The missed calls di splay on the screen on the Missed Calls tab. 2. T ouch the key to call th e displayed number . Y ou can press the key at any time to exit the Mi ssed Call feature.
27 Setting up a Multi-Par ty Call 1. Call the first participant i n the normal way . 2. T ouch New call , enter the second phone number and p ress the key . 3. T ouch Join . The two calls are now jo ined into a multi-party call and display in the order in which they were called.
Call Functions 28 Putting a Call on Hold Y ou can place the current call on hold whenever you want. Y ou can also make anothe r call while you have a ca ll in progress if your netw ork supports this s ervice. T o place a call on hold: 䊳 T ouch th e Hold icon.
29 Call Waiting Y ou can answer an incoming call while yo u have a call in progress, if this se rvice is supported by the network and you must have previo usly set the Call waiting opt ion to Activ ate . For more in form a tion, refer to “Call Settings” on page 152.

31 Access ing a Me nu Function by Scroll ing As you navigate through a menu, options disp lay on the screen as scrollable lists. T o navigate a scrollable list: 1. From t he Idle screen, to uch the Menu icon. 2. T ouch a menu opt ion. 3. From t he list of opt ions you can: • T ouch and ge ntly touch an entry to activa te it.
Menu Navigation 32 Menu List s Once you display a menu list, tapping an item cause s differen t functions, depending on which item you tapped. F or example, you can op en another list, add text to a message, send a messa ge, play a song, or view a photo.
33 In this menu, you can view the list of photos downloaded from the web ser ver , received in messages, or taken by the camera. 䊳 T ouch, dr ag and drop the Photos icon onto the desktop. Prses Vie w to view a phot o, or press Send to send this photo as a message.

Menu Navigation 36 An advanced voic e recognition soft ware used to activate a wide vari ety of functions on your phone. Nuance software automatically voice activates (up to 2,000 cont acts) for voic e dialing and searching.
37 Accessing W idgets T o display or hide the widget Bar: 1. T ap the Widget bar tab, located on th e left side of th e main displa y to open the wi dget (quick ac cess) bar .

39 Scrolling The Widget Bar contains fo urteen widgets, but can only display six widget icons at one time . T o view more widgets: 䊳 Swipe up and down along the Widget bar . Tip: Flick the screen in an upward motion to quickly scroll through the list.
Menu Navigation 40 W idget Settings T o select which items displa y or hid e in the Widget bar: 1. From Idle mode , touch Settings ➔ Widget . 2. T ouch the che ck box to place a check mark next to the Wid get you want to display . Note: By default the widgets are all checked so they display .
41 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to select the desired text input mode wh en entering characters into your phone. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive tex t entry system to reduce the number of ke y strokes asso ciated with entering text.
Entering T ext 42 1. T o change the text input mode, touch the screen, then T ouch T9Abc and select on e of the following options: • Abc • ABC • abc • Numeric • Symbols – or – 2. Press Shift to toggle T9 mode fro m T9Abc to T9ABC, or T 9abc.
43 Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text inpu t mode that allows you to key in any charac ter using sing le keystr okes. This text input mode is based o n a built-in d ictionary . T o enter a word in T9 mode: 1. When you are in T9 mode, start entering a word by touching the 2 to 9 keys.
Entering T ext 44 • T o enter periods, hyphens, and oth er special characters, touch Symbol and then touch the corresponding key . If the symbol does not display on the initia l screen, touch the left << or right >> key to display the ne xt set of symbols.
45 Ke ys By default, the first lett er of an entry is ca pitalized a nd all consecutive letters are ke pt in lowercase (unless you touch the Shift key). After e ntering a character , the curs or automatically advances to the next spac e after two seconds or when you enter a character on a different key .

Y ou can save phone numbe rs to your phone’ s memory on to your SIM card. Using Mobile Address Book Use the following procedures to st ore a new contact to your Phone.

Understanding Y our Phonebook 48 Storing a Number on the SIM Card The default st orage location for saving phone numbers to your Phonebook is yo ur phone’ s built-in memory. T o save a number to your SIM card, you need to change the Save new contacts option first.

Understanding Y our Phonebook 54 Send name card via Bluetooth The Send name card vi a BT (Bluetooth) opt ion allows you to send your name card to a Bluetooth enabled devi ce. 1. Create a name card (My Prof ile). For mor e information, refer to “My Profile” on page 52.

59 New Message s T a b The New Messages T ab is an area that displays on th e screen when a missed call, new m essage, or voicema il is sent to the phone.

61 Tip: Tilting the phone to a horizontal position displays the QWERTY keyb oard , while holding the phone in the vertical position displays the numeric keypad . Note: For further details about entering characters, see “Using T9 Mode” on page 43. Y ou can enter up to 160 standard Alphabet characters per page in your message.
Messages 62 Creating a T ext Message using the P en Tool In this menu, you can handwrite and send a tex t message. 1. In Idle mode, T ouc h Menu ➔ Messa ging ➔ Create message . 2. T ap the screen to disp lay the keybo ard. 3. T ouch the Pe n tool, then use your fingerti p or a stylus to handwrite your message.
63 7. Select one of the following from the Send T o menu and touch Add when you are finished. • Recent recipients : allows you to select a numb er or an addr ess from the l ast 20 destinat ions you entered . • Phonebook : allows y ou to enter the phone number you want f rom your Cont acts List.
Messages 64 Picture Messa ges This menu allows you to use the Multimedia Message Service (MMS). Picture messaging is a messaging service that provides de livery of personal multimedia messa ges from phone to phone or from phone to email.
65 5. T ouch Sound to add a sound to this message and sele ct from the following: • Record Sound : allows you to record a voice me ssage to attach to this message. • Add from Sounds : allows you to select a sound fr om the Sounds f older to a ttach to this message.
Messages 66 Picture message settings Use the following options to set Send and Receive settings for Pictu re messages. 1. In Idle mode, T ouc h Menu ➔ Messa ging ➔ Messages settings ➔ Picture message . Sending options • Priority : you can select the priority level of your messages.
67 E-mail E-mail enables you to review and crea te e-mail using A IM ® , AOL ® , Y ahoo! ® Comcast, Compuserv e, Earthlink, Gmail, HotPOP , Juno, Mac, NetZero, S BC Y ahoo!, Verizon and several other emai l services. Y ou can also rece ive text message alerts when you receive an impo rtant e-mail.

71 3. While viewing a Push message, you may choose the follo wing options: •R e p l y : allows you to send a reply to the sender by send ing a V oice note, T ext message , or Multimedia message. •F o r w a r d : allows you to forwar d the message to another num ber .
Messages 72 Instant Messaging (IM) Instant Messa ging (IM) is a way of sending short, simple messages that are de li vered immediately to users online at that mome nt. Before using this feature, you need to subscribe to a messenger se rvice. For further details, con tact your service provider .
73 •M o r e : – Settings : allows you to ch ange your Community settings. – Send Msg to : allows you to send a me ssage to a selected contact. – Saved Conversations : shows permanent reco rds of your Instant Messaging conversations. – Minimize : minimizes the IM window.
Messages 74 •D e l e t e : deletes the selected m e ssage from the Outbox. •M o r e : – Save to phonebook : allows you to save the contact information to the phone book as a New contact or as an Update to update existing contact information. – Move to SIM card : moves the selected message to the SIM card.
75 Drafts This message box stores messages that you may want to edit or sen d at a later time. When you enter this menu, the list of messages in the box dis plays. 1. In Idle mo de, touc h Menu ➔ Messaging ➔ Drafts . A list of message drafts displays.
Messages 76 My F olders Use My Folders to manage and organize yo ur messages and store them on your phone. 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Messaging ➔ My folders . T o create a new fo lder: 2. T ouch Create folder . 3. T ap the scree n and enter a folder name t hen touch Done .

Messages 78 Previewing a Picture messa ge template Prior to saving a Picture Message template you can prev iew the t emplate and then mo dify it by adding images, sound, video, or other files. T o preview the Picture Message template: 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Messaging ➔ Te m p l a t e s .
79 9. T ouch Preview . The template displays the following options: •E d i t : redispla ys the Creat e screen so you ca n add Images, So und, Video, or Other fi les. •E d i t s t y l e : allows you to mod ify the Background color , Font color , Font style, or Page duration for this mes sage.

81 Delete by folde r This menu allows you to de lete all of the messages in each indiv idual message box. O r , you can also delete All of your mes sages i n all messa ge boxes a t one time. Import ant!: Once messages are deleted, they cannot be recovered.
Messages 82 Broadcast Messa ges (SIM Card Dependent) This network service allows you to re ceive text messa ges on va rious topics, such as th e weather or traffic.
83 Section 8: Applications This section outlines the va rious applica tions that are availabl e on your phone. Files Files allows you to manage your sounds, images, and memor y status in one c onvenient location. 1. In Idle mo de, touc h Menu ➔ Applicatio ns .

85 4. While viewing th e photo, choose from the follo wing options: • Send via : allows y ou to send t he selected phot o as a Pict ure message, A udio postcard, or to a Blue tooth enabl ed device. •S e t a s : allows you to set th e photo as your Wallpaper or as a Pi cture ID.
Applications 86 Videos In this menu, you c an view a list of videos downloaded from the web server , received in mul timedia messages, or recorded via t he phone. 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Applic ations ➔ Files ➔ V ideos ➔ Vid eo s . 2. T ouch one of the follo wing options: • Record video : allows you to begin reco rding a video.
87 Music & Sounds This option uses the web browser to naviga te to the T -Mobile Music and Sounds folder . Music This folder lists al l the music file s on the phone and memor y card. 1. T ouch an item in the Music menu and touch one of the fo llowing option s: • Cre ate fo lder : allows you to create a folder in which to store music fil es.
Applications 88 – Bluetooth visi bility : allows you to enable this sound file so it is visible to othe r Bluetooth devices. – Lock : allows you to lock the so und file to protect it from deletion.
89 Other Files This option allows you to view other types of files that you have stored on your phone. This incl udes Excel spreadsheets, text fi les, WMF files, P o werPoint presentations, PDFs, MHTML and W ord docume nts.
Applications 90 Alarm This feature allows you to: • Set up to 10 alarms to ring at specified times. • Set the phone to switch on automatically and ring the alarm e ven if the phone is switched off. T o set the alarm: 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Applications ➔ Alarm .
91 V oice Re cognition Nuance is an adva nced speech reco gnition softw are used to activate a wide variety of functio ns on your phone. Nuance software automatically voic e activates (up to 2,000 contacts) fo r voice dialing a nd searching. No pre-recording or tr aining needed.
Applications 92 Speak c learly when givi ng your command. There is no need for you to speak slowly or with added emphasis. The voice recognition software ha s been optimized to understand your speec h in its natural form . If it does not recognize your command after a few seconds, a voice prompt asks you to repeat the command.
93 4. Y ou’re asked to confirm the correct name a s Voice Comman ds displays the results. Say “ Ye s ” or “ No ” to confirm or reject the number when p rompted. Y ou can also say , “ Cancel ” (to close V o ice recognition) or “ Repeat ” (to restart V o ice Comma nds) at this time.
Applications 94 Name Lookup T o perform a name lookup, you’ll need t o have some entrie s in your Contact list. T o access Voice recognition: 1. In Idle mode, touch Menu ➔ Applications ➔ Voice recognition . After a brief pause, a list of available comm ands displays on the screen along with the “ Say a command ” message.
95 T o check phone status: 1. In Idle mo de, touc h Menu ➔ Applications ➔ Voice recognition . After a brief pause, a list of available commands di splays on the screen along with the “ Say a command ” message. 2. Say “ Check ” at a distance of 3-8 inches from the microphone .
Applications 96 Adaptation If Nuance frequently does no t recognize your commands, adap ting digit dialing to your voice improves the accurac y of digit recognition. After you adapt Digit D ial, your phone recognizes only your voice. Other use rs are not ab le to use the handset with Nuance unless the handset is reset to fact ory defaults.

Applications 98 Editing the T asks List When you select the T asks list me nu, the current contents display with a status icon to the right. If the item is comp leted, a check mark displays to the right of the task and the task displays a stri ke-through mark in the title.

While tr aveling you can select another World Clock to represent the time zone wher e you are locate d. • Set as second c lock : allows you to select a second time zone so you can tra ck the time in two parts of the world at the sam e time.
