6 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section explains how to st art using your ph one by first configuring your hardware, acti vating your service, and then setting up your Voicemail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessa ry to instal l both the batter y and SIM into their cor responding internal comp artments.
Getting Started 7 Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as shown) unt il the card locks into place. • Make sure that the card’ s gold co ntacts face into the phone and tha t the uppe r -lef t angled corner of the card i s positi oned as shown.
8 2. T o remove, pu sh on the memor y card until it clicks and is released. Then grasp the memory card and remove it from the phone. For more information on Me mory Ca rds, see “Memor y Card” on page 49. Installing the Batter y 1. Insert the batt ery into th e opening on the back of the phone, making sure the connectors align (1).
Getting Started 9 2. Press all along the edge of the back cover until you have a secure seal. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone. Charging the Batter y Y our phone is power ed by a rech argeable Li-ion batte ry .
10 1. Plug the flat end of the T ravel Charger into the Power/ Accessory Interface connector and the other end into a standard AC wall outlet. 2. When charging is finished, remove the fla t end from the interface connecto r jack on the phone. War n i n g! Y o ur touch screen responds best t o a light touch from the pad of your finger .

12 Creating a Samsung Account An active Samsung account is required to begin accessing various applications. If you did not create a Samsung account when you first set up your phone, fol low these steps: 1. In a single motion, touch and drag the Status bar downward to display the Notif ications pan el, then tap (Samsung account).

Application icons : you can place shortcuts to your favorite a pplications on the Hom e screen. 3. Primary shortcuts : allo ws quick access to important features such as Phone, C alendar , Email, Browser , and Apps.
16 9. AccuWeather Widget : displays a five-day forecast for any city you select along with weather and conditions. T ap the widget to set up the weather for a des ired city or your current location.

Volume ke ys : allow you to adjust the ringer volume while in standby mode or adjust the voice vol ume during a call. When receiving an incoming call, briefly press down either volume key ( ) to mute the ring tone.
18 S P en The S Pen is a stylus that assists yo u in performing different functions. By u sing the Pen but ton, you can minimize having to switch between touch and pen input. 1. Pen button : by pressing the Pen b utton, you can add functionalit y to the S Pen.

Launch S Note Lite S Note Lite is an a pplica tion that you can launch fro m any screen to take quick notes or jo t down ideas. T o open S Note Lite, hold the S P en button and double-tap the screen.

26 Calculator : Using this feature you can use the phone as a calculator . The calculator provides the basic arithmetic functions; ad dition, subtraction, multiplication, and divisio n. Y ou can also use this as a scientific calculator . For more information, ref er to “Calculator ” on page 171.

38 3. Drag the icon up to the Remove icon and release it. Both items turn red. Note: This action does not d elete th e shortcut, it just r emoves it from the current screen. 40 Changing the W allpaper Y ou can change the Wallpaper (b ackground) of your home screens by followi ng these steps: 1. From any Home screen, touch and hold on an empty area of the screen. 2. From the Home screen window , tap Set wallpap er . 3. Select the location where y ou would like to change the wallpaper .
Understanding Y our Phone 41 5. Press to return to the main Home screen. Adding and Deleting Home Screens Y ou can delete Home screens and then add Home screens later if you want. T o del ete a Home screen, foll ow these steps: 1. Press to activate the Home screen.
42 T o add a Home screen, follow these steps: 1. Press to activa te the Home screen. 2. Press and tap Edit . 3. T ap the Home screen that contains . A new screen is added. Note: The icon will only be displayed if a Home screen has previously been deleted.

This secure digital card enables you to exchange images, music, and da ta between SD-compa tible device’ s. This section addresses the features and options of yo ur phone’ s SD functionality .
Understanding Y our Phone 45 Erasing Files from the SD car d Y ou can erase f iles from the SD card using the phone. 1. Ensure the SD card is mounted. F or more information, refer to “Mounting the SD Card” on page 44. 2. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Setting s ➔ Storage .

Call Functions 47 Tip : Y o u can create pauses longer than three seconds by entering multiple three-second pauses. 4. Select Add wait to add a wait. A wait will pause the calling sequence until you enter a number or press a key . 5. Ta p to make the call.
48 6. Select a contact to assign t o the number . The selected contact number displays in the speed dial number box. 7. Press to display the Speed Dial sub-menu and remove a speed dial number or change the order . 8. Ta p Change order or Remove . 9. Ta p ➔ Keypad and from the Dialer , touch and hold the speed dial number to make a call.
Call Functions 49 2. Ta p to end the call. Note: Y ou can answer a call while using the Address Book or other menu feature. After endi ng the call, the phone returns to the previously active function screen.
50 A list of recent calls displays. If the number or caller is listed in your Address Book, the associa ted name displays. All calls made, received, and missed are listed. T ypes of calls are identified by the follow ing icons: Viewing Missed Calls from the Home Screen The number of calls you missed displa ys on the Home screen.
Call Functions 51 Calling Back a Missed Call T o call back a missed call number: 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Logs . A list of recent calls displays. If t he number or caller is listed in your Address Book , the associat ed name displays . 2. T ap the desired missed call.
52 Sending a Message to a R ecent Call 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Logs . A list of recent calls displays. 2. T ap the call you want to send a message to. The call detail page displays. 3. Ta p . 4. At the Message screen, ta p the empty text field and use the on-screen keypad to type in a message.
Call Functions 53 5. Read the information on the Wake up V oice talk screen, then tap Next . 6. Ta p Change now if you want to change the phrase you say to automatica lly wake up Voice talk. 7. Ta p Next . 8. Speak your command at the Say the comm and screen and tap Next .
54 Press the Up volume key to increase the volume level and press the Down volume key to decrease the volume level. From the Home screen, you can also adjus t the ringer volume using these same keys. In-Call O ptions During an active call there are several functio ns available by tapping a correspondi ng on-scr een button.
Call Functions 55 Placing a Call on Hold Y ou can p lace the current call on hold at any point during a conversation. Y ou can also make another call while you have a call in progress if your network supports this ser vice. 1. While on a call, tap Hold .
56 T o end a call on hold 1. Ta p to disconnect the active call. 2. The call on hold, will no w become the active call. T ap to end the call. 3-W ay Calling (Multi-Par ty Calling) The 3-Way or Multi-Party feature allows you to answe r a series of incoming calls and place them on hold.

60 • Automatic answering timer : configures the time delay before the device automatically accepts the incomin g call. • Outgoing cal l conditions : allows you to make calls even when the device is locked. Increase volume in p ocket This option increases the ringt one volume when the device is in a pocket or a bag.
Call Functions 61 • Fixed Dial ing Number s : allows you to restrict outgoing ca lls to a limited set of phone num bers. • A uto area code : allows you to automatically prepend a specific area code to all outbou nd calls. Slide the slider to the on position.
62 Voicemail service provided by your carrier is the default. 2. Ta p My carrier to remove the carrier Voicemail ser vice. V oicemail settings Y ou can view or modify your voicemail number from thi s menu. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ ➔ Call settings ➔ Voic email settings .
Call Functions 63 Hearing aids This option allows you to turn on Hearing aid compatibility on your device. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ ➔ Call settings . 2. Ta p Hearing aids to create a checkmark and make your device compatible with a Hearing aid.
64 Section 4: Entering T e xt This section describes how to select the desired text input method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes the predictive text entr y system that reduces the amount of key stro kes associated w ith entering text.
Entering T ext 65 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eypad There are two main keypad layout keys tha t will change the on-screen keys within the QWERTY keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: Sym and Abc . Note: When in ABC mode, the Sym button will appear .

Entering T ext 67 Handwriting Mode The phone also provides the ability to use the S Pe n to handwrite on the screen. This writin g converts to text as easily as the voice text fe ature. 1. From the keyboard, press and hold the icon, then tap to enable the Handwriting to T ext mode.
68 2. At the Listening prompt, speak into the device’ s microphone and watch your text being entered on- screen.If the text is incorr ect, tap the DELETE box. 3. The text is displayed in the message as you are speaking. Note: The feature works best w hen you break your message down into smaller segments .

Ta p Add music . 5. T ap a music file, or ta p Select al l to add all the music tracks to thi s playlist then tap Done .
88 5. Follow the on-screen instructions for gett ing your free music. All music on your device and external SD card is displayed including Music folders that may contain multiple songs.

94 Shooting mode : allows you to set t he shooting mode to one of the following: • Single shot : takes a single photo and view it before returning to the shooting mode. • Face detection : double tap on a face to zoom in or out. • Pan o r a ma : takes a landscape photo by taking an initial photo and then adding additional ima ges to itself.
