Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started wi th your phone by installing and charging the batter y , installing th e SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice mail. Before using your phone for the firs t time, you’ll need to install and charge the batt ery and install the SIM card.
7 T ext Conventions This manual provides condensed in formation abou t how to use your phone. T o make this possible , the following text conventi ons are used to represent often-used steps: Example: From the Home screen, press and then tap Settings ➔ Wireless an d network ➔ Bluetooth setti ngs .
Getting Started 8 T o replace the battery cover: 1. Position the batter y cover over t he batter y compartment and pre ss dow n until you hear a click . 2. Confirm all edges of the co ver are securely attached. SIM Card Over view Import ant!: Before removing or replacing the SIM card, make sure the phone is switched off.
9 T o remove the SIM card: 1. If installed, rem ove the battery from its com partment. The batter y can block the proper removal o f the SIM card from the slot. 2. Carefully slide the SI M card out of the SIM card socke t. Note: If the card is not inserted correctly, the phone will not detect it and nor service will be available.
Getting Started 10 Re moving the microSD Mem or y Car d 1. Remove the battery cover . 2. Firmly pres s the card into the slot and rele ase it. The card should pop partially out of the slot. 3. Remove the card from the slot. Batter y Before using your phone for the fi rst time, install t he batter y and charge it full y .
11 Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable Li-ion batte r y . A wall charger , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Getting Started 12 Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation for connecting the charger . If the charger is incorrectly connected, damage to the accessory port will occur therefore voiding the phone’s warranty .
13 3. While holding onto both si des of the phone, use your thumbs to push against the bott om edge of the LCD (2). After the initial push, the LCD will then qu ickly slide away to reveal the Q WERTY keybo ard (3).
Getting Started 14 Power Co nt r ol Active appl ications, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Sy nchronization, Location consent , or the LCD Bri ghtness functionality all act to drain your battery.
15 Switching the Phone On or Off If you do not have a SIM card inst alled the first time you turn on the device, ( No Signal A vailable ) appears at the top of t he screen. At this point yo u can only make an emergency call (normal cell phone service is not available).
Getting Started 16 Note: Y ou can choose to configure lock settings to prevent unauthorized use of your phone. For more information, refer to “Setting up SIM Card Lock” on page 197. Creating a New Google Account Y ou should create a Google ™ Account when yo u first us e your device in o rder to fully ut ilize the func tionality .
17 Note: If you already have a Google account, you only need to sign in. T o create a new Google Account from the W eb: 1. From a computer , launch a Web browser and navigate to www.google. com . 2. On the main p age, click Sign-in ➔ Create an account now .
Getting Started 18 For new users, follow the instructio ns below to set up voice mail: Note: Voicemail setup may be different depending on your network. 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Phone ) to access the phone application. 2. T ouch and hold the key until the phone dials voice mail.
19 T ask Manager Y our phone can run applicatio ns simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Sometimes your device might seem to slow down over time, and the biggest reaso n for this are background applications. These are applications that were not pr operly closed o r shutdown and are still activ e but minimized.

It also describes the phone’ s keys, screen and th e icons that display when the phone is in use. Jump key displays a li st of quickly accessible and recently used functions. This list contin ually changes based on your frequent use of various features and functions.

23 15. Power/End key ends a call or swi t ch es the phone off and on. Press and hold for two se conds to turn off Silent mode, Mobile data connectio n, Flight mode, or to turn the phone on or off. 16. Camera key allows you to acti vate the camera and camcorder and take pi ctures and videos.
Understanding Y our Phone 24 Phone Display Y our phone’ s display provides informatio n about the phon e’s status, and is the interface to the features o f your phone. Th e display indicates your connection status, si gnal strength, battery status and time.

33 Screen Navigation Using the touch screen display a nd the keys, you can navigate the features of your pho ne and enter ch aracters. The following conventions are used in this manua l to describe the na vigation action in the procedures. Understanding Y our Phone 34 • Rotate : Automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the device sideways. F or example: rotate to landscape orientation when entering text, to provide a larger keyboard, or when viewing web content to minimize scrolling.
35 Menu Naviga tion Y ou can tailor the phone’s range of functions to fit your needs using both menus and applications. Menus, sub-menus , and features are accessed by sc rolling through the available on-screen menus. Y our phone defa ults with seven home screens.
Understanding Y our Phone 36 Navigating T hr ough t he App licatio n Menus There are three default Applicatio n Menus a vaila ble. As you ad d more applications from the Andr oid Marketplace, more scr eens are created to house these new apps. 1. Press and tap ( Applications ).
37 Using Context Me nus Context menus (also called pop- up menus) contain options that apply to a speci fic item on the s c reen. They funct ion similarly t o menu options that appear when you right c lick your mouse on your desktop computer . 䊳 T ouch and hold an item onscreen to open its context menu.

39 Calculator Launches the onscreen calcula tor applica tion. The calculator provides the ba sic arithmetic functions; addition, subtraction, multiplication, a nd division. Y ou can also use this as a scientific calc ulator . For more information, refer to “Calculator” on page 137.
Understanding Y our Phone 40 Files Lets you view supported image files and text files on your microSD card. Organize and st ore data, images, and more in your own personal file folders. File s are stored to the memory card in separate (user define d) folders.

43 T ask Manager Use T ask Manager to see wh ich applications are running on your phone, and to end running applicat ions to extend battery life. For more informat ion, refer to “T ask Manager” on page 155. T e leNav GPS Na vigator This driving aid provides both audible and v isual navigation instructions fo r GPS navigation.
Understanding Y our Phone 44 Universal C omposer Allows you to compose message s that contain for more than your everyday text and picture, but al so multim edia files and Google Map (GPS) information. Think of it as an all-in one mess aging function.
45 Customizing the Screens Y ou can customize the Home scre ens (panels) to display t he Widgets, Shortcuts, Folders, or W allpapers. For example, one screen could cont ain the Musi c Player shortcut and other forms of media, while another screen mi ght contain communicati on apps such as Gmail and IM.
Understanding Y our Phone 46 T o add a screen: 1. Press ➔ and then tap Reorder ( ). 2. Ta p t h e Add icon ( ). The newly added screen appears as the last page. 3. Press to return to the main Home screen. Re ar ranging the Screens 1. Press ➔ and then tap Reorder ( ).
47 T o add a shortcut from the Applications screen: 1. Press to go to the Home screen. 2. Select a loca tion (scree n) for your new shortcut by scrolling across your available scre ens until you reach the desired one. 3. Ta p ( Applications ) to reveal all your current availa ble applications.
Understanding Y our Phone 48 T o remove a Widget: 1. T ouch a nd hold a Widget until it unlocks from the current screen. 2. Drag the widget over the Remove tab ( ) and release it. • As you pl ace the Widg et into the T rash, both items turn red. • This action doe sn’t delet e the Widget , it just removes it from th e current screen.
49 Deleting a folder 1. T ouch and hold a desi red fo lder . This unlocks it from its location on the current screen. 2. Drag the folder over the Remove tab ( ) and release it. Manag ing Wall pape rs Wallpapers consist of either Ga llery imag es (user taken), Live wallpapers (animated backgrounds), or Wallpa per gallery (default phone wallpapers).
Memory Card 50 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD (SD) or microSDHC card (also referred to a s a memory card) to expand avai lable memory space. This secure digi tal card e nables you to exc hange images, music, and data betw een SD-compatible devi ces.
51 Important!: DO NO T remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data. Make sure your battery is fully charged before using the microSD card. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the batter y runs out while you are using th e microSD card.
Memory Card 52 SD card Memo r y Status T o view the m emory allocation for your external S D card: 䊳 Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ SD card and phone storage . The availabl e memory displays under the T otal space and Available spac e headings.
53 Section 4: Call Functions and Contacts List This section describes features a nd functionality associated with making or answering calls, and the Contacts list, which is used to store contact info rmation. Displaying Y our Phone Number 䊳 Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ About p hone ➔ Status .
Call Functions and Contacts List 54 Dialing Options When you enter numbers on the Keypad, you will see three on-screen options. From the keypad screen, use one of the fo llowing options: • Call ( ) to call the entered number . • Delete ( ) to delete digits from the current number .
55 Prefix Dialing When activated, this feature au tomatically prep ends a string of numbers (such as an area code ) to any dialed number . This feature is usefu l for international di aling, or dialing within an ar ea code where all the call s you make for a period of ti me use one prefix.
Call Functions and Contacts List 56 4. Ta p Delete . Inter national Calls 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Phone ), then touch and hold . The + symbol displays. 2. Use the on-scree n keypad to ente r the country code, are a code, and phone number . • If yo u make a mi stake, tap once to delete a single digit.
57 2. Press and then tap Add wait . This feature causes the phone to require your acceptan ce before sending the next set of entered digits. 3. Ta p . 4. Once prompted, tap to di al the remaining digits. Redialing t he Last Nu mber The phone stores the numbers of th e calls yo u’ve dialed, received, or m issed if the call er is identified.
Call Functions and Contacts List 58 Changin g a Speed D ial Ent r y 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Phone ). 2. Press and then tap Speed di al setting . Import ant!: The number 1 is reserved for Voicemail and another number cannot be assigned to this slot.
59 Important!: Wi-Fi must first be active and communicating prior to launching Wi-Fi Calling. Activ ating Wi-Fi : 1. Press ➔ and then tap ➔ Wireless and network ➔ Wi-Fi settings. 2. Ta p Wi-F i to turn it on. A checkmark display s to indicate activation.

61 In Call Options Y o ur phone provides a number of fea tures that are a vailable for use during a call. Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, use the Volume keys on the left si de of the phone, to adjust the earpiece vol ume. 䊳 Press the Up volume key t o increase the v olume level a nd the Down volume key to decr ease the level.

63 Creating a Memo During a Call During a call it may be necessa ry to record info rmation (a Note). 1. Press and then tap Memo . 2. Use the keyboard to ente r the note then tap Save . Automatic screen lock If you configured your phon e with the Automati c screen lock option, during a call your screen loc ks to prevent accidental screen presses.

The list displays the callers in the order they were dialed. 3. T ap the number for the particip ant in which you want to speak privately .
65 Call Logs T ab The Call logs tab is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls yo u placed, acce pted, or missed. The Call logs tab make redialing a number fast and easy .
Call Functions and Contacts List 66 Accessing C all Logs from The Notifications Area 1. Locate from the Notifi cations area of the S tatus bar . 2. T ap the Sta tus bar to reveal the Notifi cations tab, and then drag the tab to the bot tom of the screen to open the Notificati o ns panel (1).

69 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes how to sele ct the desired te xt inp ut method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes the predicti ve text entry system that reduces the amount of key strokes asso ciated with entering text.
Entering T e xt 70 Import ant!: At any time, you can access the QWERTY keyboard and directly enter text. For more information, refer to “Acc essing the QWERTY Keyboard” on page 12.
71 • Word choice window : sets the amou nt of times the word choice selectio n window displays on sc reen. Move the slid er between Never or Al ways and tap OK . • Speed vs. accuracy : sets how quick ly Swype respon ds to on- screen input. Move the sli der between F ast Response (s peed) or Error T olerant (accuracy) and tap OK .

73 Using 123A BC Mode in SWYPE In 123ABC mode, you can enter only letters and a few common punctuation marks from the onscre en keyboa rd. The text mode key shows . 1. From a screen where you can en ter text, tap th e text input field to reveal the on -screen keyboard.
Entering T e xt 74 Note: If multiple word choices exist for your Swype entry, an on-screen popup appears to provide additional word choices. Enterin g Number s and Symbols in SWYPE By using the onscreen keyboard in portrait mode , some sy mbols are not available (such a s Emoticons or Smileys).

77 • Auto-capitalization automaticall y capita lizes the first letter of the first word in each sentence (standar d English st yle). • Voice input activates the Voice in put feature. Th is is an experimen tal feature that u ses Google’ s networked speech recognitio n applica tion.

79 T o reveal additional Q WERTY text editing options: 1. T ouch and hold an acti ve te xt entry field. 2. From the Edit text co ntext menu, tap an available functio n: • Select all highligh ts all chara cters in t he text messa ge fiel d. • Select text/Stop selec ting text lets you ma nually highlight characters i n the text message field .
Entering T e xt 80 Entering Sym bols and Smiley s Most symbols and punctuation marks appear as alternate characters ab ove the primary letters and numbers on the QWERTY keyboard.
81 T o enter “smileys” (emotico ns): 1. Positi on the cursor where you wan t the emoticon to appear within your message. 2. Press to open the onscreen Emoticons page.
Contacts 82 Section 6: Contacts This section explains how to use a nd manage your Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memory. Accounts From the Accounts menu y ou decide if you want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data at any given time, or if you want the applications to sync hronize automat ically .
83 Contacts List Creati ng a Con tact The default storage location for saving phone numbers to your Contacts List is your phone’ s built-in memory . If existing Google and Corporat e email accounts have been synchronized to your phone, these will be made available t o your device during the creation of new entries.
Contacts 84 Note: Contact information stored on the phone can be lost if the device is ever factory reset. 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Contacts ). 2. Ta p ( Add to Contacts ) to add a contact. Note: Y ou can also add a new contact by entering a number from the keypad and pressing and then tap Add to Contacts ➔ Create contact .

T ouch a phone number field and enter a phone number . • Ta p o n t h e QWERTY keyboard to remove a previou sly entered phone number .

89 • Add to group : allows you to ad d the current Contacts entry to an existing group. • Mark as default : allows you to assign defau lt numbers, emai l, etc. . for a selected C ontact. For more info rmation, refe r to “Marking a Contact as Defa ult” on page 91.
Contacts 90 Next time you s ynchronize your p hone with your accounts , any updates contacts make to em ail account names, email addresses, etc. automatically up date in your contacts list. For more information about synchronizing acco unts, see “Get Friends” on page 9 4.
91 Mar king a Cont act as Defau lt When you use applica tions such as the Voice Dialer or other messaging type applications, th e application needs to know which information is primary (default) in a cont act entry list.

Ta p Send and select a delivery method: • Bluetooth to transmit this contact to another bluetooth-com patible device. •E m a i l to attach th e contact car d to a new ou tgoing email (Exchange or Internet). •G m a i l to attach th e contact ca rd to a new outgoing Inte rnet-based email.
93 Copying Con t act Information to the m icroSD Card This procedure allows yo u to copy entry information saved on the phone’ s memor y , onto the SIM card. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. From the Contacts List, press and then tap Import/Export ➔ Export to SD card .
Contacts 94 5. Yo u r Contacts tab then reflects any updated Contact information. Note: Syncing of contacts requires you are logged into your Gmail and Corporate accounts via the device.
95 6. After synchronizing accounts yo u may want to link contact information. For more inform ation, refer to “Joining Contact Information” on page 89.
