Chapter 10: Configurations 147 Tiered Configurations Standard Tiered Configurations Common Guidelines for Tie ring Configuration Only Paragon I with hardware version HW3 (running Paragon II code) or Paragon II Main Unit can serv e as Base Units (first tier).
Chapter 10: Configurations 148 The operation is the same for tiered dev ices that are not Paragon switches. A Tiered devices that are not Paragon switche s B Paragon switches (UMT -x) C User stations Guidelines for Multiple Base Configuration A multiple base configuration could be t w o-tier or three-tier configuration.
Chapter 10: Configurations 149 2. Recycle the power of all impacted devices. Thi s is recommended to build a clean database fo r Parag on switches. Sequence of re cycli ng power is from the HIGHEST tier (thi rd tier) to the Base Unit. In our example: UMT-3A --> UMT-2A --> UMT- 2B --> UMT-2C --> UMT- 1 A --> UMT-1B.
Chapter 10: Configurations 150 Non-Standard Tiered Configura tions Non-Standard tiered configuration s ar e those configuration s supported by Paragon II, but require special procedure in order to function properly.
Chapter 10: Configurations 151 Triangle Configuration The following procedure m ust be followed to ensure this configu ration functions properly. After re-connection, all Paragon switche s must undergo a FUNC reset to clear the switches' databa se.
Chapter 10: Configurations 152 Execute the FUNC reset in the following order: UMT-3A --> UMT-2A --> UMT-2B --> UMT-1. Double diamond conf iguration Officially, the Double Diamond config urat ion is NO T a Raritan-approved solution if Stacking Units or P2-Hu bPac is included in the configu ration.
Chapter 10: Configurations 153 Redundant Configura tion These configurations are simply more complex configuration s, and might be used to ensure redunda ncy; every Ba se Unit is configured to another, in case of individual system failure. The following procedure m ust be followed to ensure this configu ration functions properly.
Chapter 10: Configurations 154 In order to make a redundant configuration sy stem operate more efficiently, the follo wing connection scheme between tiers is recommended: Assume there are two Para.
Chapter 10: Configurations 155 Stacked Configurations Definition of Stacked Con figuration The Paragon II Stacking Unit expands the number of available channel ports in a single switchi ng unit. It does not add user ports. P2-UMT1664S has four 68-pin exp an sio n port s.
Chapter 10: Configurations 156 Up to three P2-UMT832S units (Stackin g Units) can be connected to one P2-UMT832M unit (Main Unit ). Only one P2-UMT1664S unit (Stacking Unit) can be connected to one P2-1664M unit (Main Unit). A maximum of 128 channel ports (Main Unit + Stacki ng Unit s) is permitted.
Chapter 10: Configurations 157 Example B: Non-blocked System—P2-UMT832M Standard configuration — any user ca n a ccess any channel port in the system. Example C: P2-UMT1664M—Stacked an d Tiered Standard configuration — any user ca n a ccess any channel port in the system.
Chapter 10: Configurations 158 Example D: P2-UMT832M—Stacked an d Tiered Standard configuration — any user ca n a ccess any channel port in the system. Example E: Illegal Configuration Illegal configurations are those t hat are not currently supported by Paragon II.
Chapter 10: Configurations 159 Example G: Illegal Configuration Example H: Illegal Configuration Loop-Back Configuration This dead-loop setup will cause se rver d atabase conflict and should therefore never be used.
Chapter 10: Configurations 160 Different Cable Length Configuration You may use Cat5 UTP cables of different cable lengt hs to connect servers and tiered devices to a Parago n swit ch, but the CABLE LENGTH DIFFERENCE SHALL NOT BE TOO LARGE.
Chapter 10: Configurations 161 Example B: Improper ca bl e length difference: P2-HubPac Configuration and Multiple Video Read this section if performing the Multiple Video function in a Paragon II system in which the P2-HubPac is install ed.
Chapter 10: Configurations 162 In the following illustrations, the Paragon Base Units are UMT-1A , UMT-1B , UMT-1C and UM T-1D . You can connect the HubPac' s switch ports either to the Base Units or to the “S tacki ng Units” attached with these Base Units.
Chapter 10: Configurations 163 —OR— You may connect the switch ports to the tiered Parago n swit ches of different Base Units. The Multiple Video function remains workable in this configuration.
Chapter 10: Configurations 164 The following diagram illustrates a P2-HubPac configur ation in which regular channel access w ill work properly but the Multiple Video function will fail . To use the Multiple Video featur e properly, do not connect the P2-HubPac to the Paragon Base Unit and its tiere d Para gon switches.
165 A Paragon user station set to Direct Mod e can b e directly connected to a Paragon CIM, either temporarily for em e rgency “crash cart” access or permanently for non-swit ched extens ion purposes, without having t o go through a Paragon Base Unit.
