DN1 • 4 INTR ODUC TIO N With today’s e ver changing technologies, more appliances dep end on battery power to enable t heir use. W hile this gives us greater freedom, it is often at the high cost of purchasing portable ener gy, or batteries, to run our portab le electronic gismos.
DN1 • 5 oxidation reduction or “redox" chemical reaction in the cell, we effectively decrease th e chemically active sur face area inside the cell.
DN1 • 6 We designed our kit to change quickly and easil y adapt to a variet y of cell or battery pack typ es f or anything from video camcor ders to cordless phones. You can configure it for the number of batteries in your pack, discharge and charging rate.
DN1 • 7 Since we want the voltag e appearing at the IC to be equivalent to one cell, we first must “divide” th e cell vo ltage by the number of cells in the pac k. The ladder resistors R2 -R24 form an ef fective voltage divider circuit so th at the BAT (pin 7) voltage will be about 1.

DN1 • 10 RAMSEY Learn-As-You-Build KIT ASSEMBLY There ar e numerou s solder connec tions on the D N1 printed circuit board . Therefore, PLEASE t a k e us seriously wh en we say that good soldering is essential to the proper operation of your Doctor Nicad! • Use a 25-watt soldering pencil with a clean, sharp tip.
DN1 • 11 DN1 PARTS FI NDER DIAGRAM.
DN1 • 12 1. Identify and install DPDT switch S2. Be sure to push the switches flat to the circuit board. Solder all six connections. 2. Install the other DPD T toggle power switch S3. Once again , be sure to push the component flush to the circuit board before soldering.
DN1 • 13 11. Install R1, 1K ohm [brow n-black-red]. 11. Install Q1, the power FET transistor [marked 7035]. Fo rm the leads as shown prior to installation. Bolt the regulator to the circuit board. 12. Install L1, the large axial leaded w ire wound inductor.
DN1 • 14 23. Select two of the 1uF e lectrolytic capacitors and solder the ground leads together.Install them as C3. Bend the ground leads away from U1. 24. Install C1, the remaining 1uF cap acitor. The positive side should be faci ng R5 . 25.
DN1 • 15 present, giving us an accurate representation of one cell contained in the pack. 33. Install R21, 47K ohm [yellow-violet-ora nge]. 34. Install DIP switch S1 (D)ual (I)nline (P)ackage. Make sure that the switchable contacts face toward the ou tside of the circuit board, allow ing for easy chan ging of number of cells to charge.
DN1 • 16 CONGRATULATIONS You have just co mpleted you r DN1 NiCa d batte ry conditione r unit. Tak e a well deserved break no w. Give your eyes a rest. W hen you return, be sure to check over your work on the entire circuit board. Energiz ing the circuit boa rd with solde r “bridges” or misplaced components can damage your kit.
DN1 • 17 Fill in the chart with the ra tings imprinted on your ba tteries. This shoul d help you to determine the proper jumper settings DN1 FINAL A SSEMBL Y INST RUCTIONS Use scrap resistor leads to form the proper “jumper” w ires to configure your conditioner.
DN1 • 18 SETTING UP THE SWITCHES You’ll need to configure the ro w of DIP s w itches for y our battery pack now. Since the minimum number of cells is at least one, the conditioner is already set up for a single battery to begin w ith. Switch No. 10 is reserved for the discha rging current setup.
DN1 • 19 indicator. By changing the ON / OFF times this LED becomes a charging status indic ator! Us e the following chart f or an indica tion of what the doctor is telling you. POWER SUPPLY CONSIDERATIONS The power supply used for the Dr. NiCad can very greatly depen ding on ho w you set up your char ger to work.
DN1 • 20 begin the Fast Charging mode. The Benchmark IC will constantly moni tor the pack and tu rn off the fast charge w hen the c ells are charged just to f ull capacity. Once this is accomplished, it will periodic ally “top off” the cells wi th a high current burst, and allow a slig ht trick le charge to f low .
DN1 • 21 handled by the doctor, but if you have seve ral pack s, be sure to rotate them (or maybe buy a few more Dr. NiCad Chargers). BATTERY REPAIR ?? !! Many times we have older ba tteries or packs that don’t seem to hold a charge at all, but they were so expe nsive that we couldn’t bear to toss them in the trash.
DN1 • 22 Use a methodical, logica l troubleshooting technique. Most problems can b e solved using common sense. A volt-ohm meter and a clear head a re usually all that are needed to correct any problem.
DN1 • 23 The Ramsey Kit Warranty Please read carefully BEFORE calling or writing in about your kit. M ost problems can be solved without contacting the factory. Notice that thi s is not a "fine p rint" w arr a nty. We want y ou to unders tand your rights and ours too ! All Ramsey kits will w ork if assembled pro perly.
