AF1 • 4 INTR ODU C TION Radio men know that the C W signal is the most reliable m ode of transm ission when opera ting on the ama teur radio bands. Ther e are, however, so m e inherent problems that exist in CW reception.
AF1 • 5 THEORY OF OPERATION Let’s have a look a t what m akes our audio filter so special. Have a look at the schematic diagram and follow along. First, havi ng a look at the po wer supply section of t he AF1 notice that diodes D3, 6, 7,and 8 form a full wave bridge re ctif ier.

AF1 • 8 Now, let's get building ! Since you may appreciate some “wa rm -up” soldering practice as well as a chance to put some “landm arks” on th e PC board, w e’ll f irst install some “hardware” components . This will also help us to get acquainted with the up - down, left - right orientation of the circuit board.
AF1 • 9 polarit y. See the par ts diag ram fo r proper pl acement. The capa citor should fit snugly down to the PC board. When installing the components be sure to save some of the longer clipped leads to use later as “jumper” wires. 12. Install C11, another 1000 uF electrol ytic capacitor.

AF1 • 12 31. Using a scrap component lead, form and install JMP11. 32. Install C13, .1 uF disc [marked .1 or 1 04]. 33. Install C2, .001 uF disc capacitor [marked 102 or .001]. 34. Install R1, 47K ohm [yellow-violet-o range]. I’ll bet y ou didn’t forget to stand it up.

AF1 • 14 Connect an audio ou tput device such as a speaker or headset to the appropriate jack (J1 or J2, respecti vely). With switch S1 in the off position you shoul d be able to he ar the tone under test. Set switches S2 and S3 in the “out” position for maximum bandw idth.
