7 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can set the TAD-1015’ s base on a flat surface (suc h as a d esk or counter top), or mount it on a wall plate or di rectly on the wall. The base’s location a ffects the phone’s range, so if you have a ch oice of sev- eral loc ations, try each to see whi ch gives the best performance.
8 4. Route the a dapter ’s cord t hrough the st rain relief slot o n the back of the b a se . 5. Plug the a dapter into a st andard AC outlet. The P OWE R in dicator on the base lights. 6. Fully extend the base’s antenna and place it in a vertical position.
9 3. Route the adapter cord through the upper and lower grooves and the modular cord through only the upper gro ove on t he bo ttom of the base. 4. Plug the mo dular cord’s other end into the w all pla te ja ck, the n align the base’s keyhole slots with the wall plate studs an d slide the ba se downward to secure i t.
10 Mou ntin g the Base Direct ly on the W all To mount the base directly on the wall, you n eed two wood s crews (not sup- plied) with heads that fit into the key- hole slots on the bottom of t h e base .
11 6. Plug the a dapter into a st andard AC outlet. The P OWE R in dicator on the base lights. 7. Plug the other end of the modul ar cord into a m odular ph one line jack. 8. Press and lift out the hands et holder , r o tate it 1 80°, then snap it back i nto plac e so it holds the handset.
12 PREPARA TION CONNECTING AND CHARGING T HE BATTERY PACK The TAD-1015 comes with a recharg e- able nickel-cadmiu m battery pack in the handset. Before using your phone, you mus t connect the battery, then charge it for ab out 18 hours.
13 • U sing a p encil eraser , clean the charging con tacts on the handset and the base ab out once a month to mak e sure they are not dirty or tarnished. • A bout once a m onth, fully dis- charge the bat tery by keeping t he handset off the base u nti l the BA TT LOW in dicat or lights.
14 Note: If your phone system requires that you dial an access code ( 9 , fo r ex am ple ) be for e yo u dial an outs ide num ber , do not press the access code either . If the dial tone s tops, you have touch-tone service. Leave P • • T se t to T .
15 T ELE PHONE O PERATION MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS To make o r answer a call, lift the han d- set. Or, if the ha ndset is off the base, press TA L K . The BAT T LOW indicat or on the handset and the IN USE indic a- tor on the ba se light. To end a call , place the hand set on the base or press TA L K on the handset .
16 USING FLASH FLASH performs the electronic equi va- lent of a switchho ok operat ion for sp e- cial services, s u ch as Call Waiting. For examp le, if y ou h av e Cal l Wa iting, press FLASH to a nswer an incoming call wit h out di sconnect ing the current call .
17 MEMORY DIALI NG You can store u p to 10 numbers in memor y, th en dial a sto red number by pressing a one - d igit memory location number. Storin g a Number in Memory 1. Lift the handset. If you he ar a ton e , p r e s s TA L K to turn i t off. 2. Press MEMO .
18 Ente rin g a Pau se In some teleph one systems , you m ust dial an acces s code ( 9 , f or example) and wait for a second dial tone b efore you can dial a n ou tside number. You can store the access code with the phone numb er. However, you should also store a pause after the acc ess code to all o w the out si de line time to connect.
19 T AD OPERATION You can use the bas e or the h andset to control the T AD. Wit h the hands et you set the day and t ime, the remote operation personal identification num - ber, record out going m essages and memos, turn the TAD on and of f, play messag es, and del ete message s.
20 SETTI NG TH E REMOTE OPERAT ION PIN The PIN (persona l identification num - ber) permits rem ote access to t he TAD. The PIN can be any number from 00 to 99. Note: The default setting is 00. 1. Press REMOTE on the handset so the BA TT LO W indicator lights green.
21 5. Pr e ss for AM o r f or PM. The T AD beeps, then announc es the time you s et through th e handset, and beeps again. Notes: • The seconds s tart to c ount from 00 after y o u set AM or PM. • If you make an error, the T AD beeps 5 times. Repeat the steps to enter the day and time cor- rectl y.
22 3. When yo u finish your mes sage, press STOP/7 . The T AD beeps, plays b ack the m essage, then beeps again. Note: If your message is less than 2 seconds, the TAD doe s not recognize it as a ne w messag e, and play s back the previous pre-recorded m essage.
23 SCREENING CALLS You can l et the TAD answer c alls for you while you listen t o the caller’s messag e through the base’ s speaker. If you dec ide to answer the call while screening, l ift the hands et or press TA L K . The TAD stops r e cording and resets to answer th e next call.
24 • If you turn t he base’s ri nger of f, the T AD does not beep whe n i t re- ceives new me ssag es. See “T u rn- ing the Base’s R inger Off/On” on Page 14.
25 After all messages and me mos have played, the TAD says “End of mes- sages.” To stop playback before t he end of the me ssages, press STOP (or STOP/ 7 on the handset). DELETI NG MESSAGES To delete the current mess age, press DELETE (or DELETE/4 on t he h ands et) at any time during message playba ck.
26 REMOTE OPERATIO N USING THE T OLL -SAVER When y ou call the TAD w ith RING TIME set to TS (toll-saver), it answers after about two rings if you h av e new messag es (ones you have not listened to). If there are no new mes sages , the TAD waits for about five ri n gs before it answers.
27 Notes: • Y ou can enter the com mand while the T AD is announ c i ng the num- ber of mes sages or during the voice prompts. • If you do not ente r a command within 20 seconds after the voi ce prompts end, the T AD hangs up.
28 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do no t exp ect yo u to hav e any prob lem s with your TAD-1015, b ut if you do , try these suggest ions. If you still have problems, take your T AD-1015 to you r local Ra- dioShack store for assistanc e. Pro blem Su gg est ion Noise, static, or weak sig nal when the phone is away fr om t he ba s e.
29 Y ou hear noise in th e hand- set, and none of the keys work. Make sure the A C adapter and battery a re prop- erly con nected. Pr ess CH to change the channel (see “Changing the Channel” on Page 15). There is no dial tone. Check all phone line connections .

31 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the instr u ctions in “ Co n- necting and Cha rging the Battery Pack” on Page 12, the battery pack should last about one year. If the bat - tery does n ot hol d a charge f or more than 2 hours after an overnight c harge, replace the battery pack with a 3.
32 Imp o rt an t: This product contains a re- chargeable ni ckel cadm ium battery. At the end of the battery’ s useful life, it must be re c ycled or disposed of pro p- erly. Con tact your l ocal, cou nty, or state hazardo us waste mana gement authorities for informa tion on recyc ling or disposa l programs in your area.
33 LIGHTN ING Your TAD-1015 has bui lt-i n l ightning protection to r e duce the risk of dam- age from surges in phone and pow er line current. This protection meets or exceeds FCC requirements. However, lightning striking the phone line or power lines can damage your phone.

An important point after buying a device Radio Shack TAD-1015 (or even before the purchase) is to read its user manual. We should do this for several simple reasons:
