5 INSTAL LATION INSTALLING TH E HANDSET’ S ANT ENN A Insert the antenna into th e hole at the top of the handset, then rot ate the an- tenna clockwise un til it is secure.

Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into t he LINE jack on the back of the base. 2. Insert the supplied pow er adapter ’ s barrel plug into the DC 12V jack o n the back of the bas e.

9 7. Plug the cord’s other end into a modular phone li ne jack . 8. Fully ext end the base’s antenna and place it in a vertic al position. CON NECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The ET-551 com es with a recharge- able nickel-cadmium battery pack.
10 4. T o charge the batte ry pack, simply place th e hands et on the b ase. The CHARGE indicator on the base lights. Recharge the batt ery pack when the LOW BATT indicator on the handset flashes.
11 • I f the battery pac k g ets compl etely discharged, the ET-551 loses the securit y access -protection code. T o re set the c ode, place t he han d- set on the bas e and charge the battery pack. • The supplied battery p ack should last about a year .
12 OPE R ATION MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS To make a call, pick up the handset and pr ess TA LK . W hen t he T A LK indi - cator lights s teadily and you hea r the dial tone, dial the pho ne num ber. To answer a call if t h e handset is on the base, simply lift the h andset and begin your conv ersation.
13 USING FLASH FLASH performs the electronic equi va- lent of a switchho ok operat ion for sp e- cial services, s u ch as Call Waiting. For examp le, if y ou h av e Cal l Wa iting, press FLASH to answer an incom ing call wit h out disconnecting the current call .
14 PAGING To page t he person who has t he hand- set or to locate the handset when the phone is no t in use, press PA G E on the base. The ha ndset beeps three tim es. If you hold d own PAGE f or 2 seconds, the handset beeps for 30 seconds to give you time to locate the handset.
15 Note: If three qui ck beep s s ou nd, you have m ade an error and the number was not stored. Start again f rom Ste p 2. For each stored num ber, wri te t he per- son’s or com pany’s name next to the appropriate location number on the me mory di aling ca rd.
16 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not expect you to h av e any problem s with y our phone, but if you d o, the fol- lowing sugg estions might help. Proble m Suggestion Low v olume or unusual sou nds. Someon e has picked up another phone on the same line. Hang up the other phone.

19 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the instructions in “ Con- necting and Cha rging the Battery Pack” on P age 9, the bat tery pack should last about one year. If the bat - tery pack will not hold a cha r g e for more than 2 hours after an overnight charge, rep lace it with a ne w 3.
