2 FEA TURES Your RadioShack ET-598 25-C hannel 2-Line Cordless T elephone with Dual Keypads lets you place and receive calls on two separat e telephone lines. It is designed t o exacting standards that ensure reliability, long life, and outstand ing performance.

6 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can place the p hone on a desk top or table, or mount it on a wall. Sel ect a location that is: • near an A C outlet • near a telephone lin e jack • ou.
7 Placi ng the Base on a Desk T op F oll ow t hes e st ep s wh en yo u pl ace the base on a desk, shelf, or t able. 1. If you have a single 2-line modul ar jack, plug one end of the sup plied modular cord into the TEL LINE 1/2 jack.
8 5. Plug the other end(s ) of the mod u- lar cord(s) into the modular jack(s ). 6. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. Moun ting t he Ba se on a W all Pla te To make t his connection, you need a 2-line short m odular c ord, such as Cat.
9 2. Plug the supp lied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into t h e DC IN 9V j ack. 3. Route the adapter cord through both the uppe r and l ower grooves and th e modul ar cord(s) through only the upper groove on the bot - tom of the base. Note: If you are using two modu- lar cords, route bot h through the appropriate grooves.
10 7. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. Mo unt i ng t h e B as e Direct ly on the W all To mount the base directly on the wall, you n eed two wood s crews (not sup- plied) with heads that fit into the key- hole slots on the bottom of t h e base .
11 3. Plug the supp lied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into t h e DC IN 9V j ack. 4. Route the ada pter and m odular cords through both the upper and lower grooves on the bot tom of the b a se . Note: I f you are using two modu- lar cords, route bot h through the appropriate grooves.
12 8. Press and lift out the hands et holder , rotate it 1 80 °, then snap it back into place so it holds the handset. 9. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. CON NECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The ET-598 com es with a recharge- able nickel-cadmium batt ery pack in- stalled in the handset.
13 4. T o charge the batte ry pack, simply place the handset on the base. The CHARGE indicator on the base lights. Recharge the batt ery pack when the BATT LOW indicator flashes.
14 SETTI NG THE DIALING MO DE Set P • • T on the back of the base f or the type of service you hav e. If you are not sure wh ich type you have, do thi s te s t. 1. Set P • • T to T (t one). 2. Press SPEAKER then press LINE 1 and listen for t he dial tone.
15 OPE R ATION Note: Y ou ca n use the key pad on ei - ther the h andset or th e base t o operate the ET-598. To use the s peakerpho ne, you mus t use the base’s keypad; to use the hand set, you m ust use the handset’s keyp ad.
16 Ch anging the C hann el If you notice inte r ferenc e, static , or noise during a call, press CH (channel ) to find a c l earer channel. The ET-598 changes to a different channel eac h t ime you press CH . Note : If the hands et is too far aw ay from the base, the channel might not change.
17 Usin g Privacy While usin g the speakerphone, y ou can talk t o someone e lse in the room without the person o n the ot her end of the phone l ine hearing your conversa- tion. Press and re lease PRIV ACY dur - in g the cal l. T he SP EAKER i ndicato r flashes.
18 You can use anothe r phone on the same line to pick up th e call on hold, but the device that put the line on hold still shows that line on hold. After 5 minutes t he line indicator turns off. You can alternate b etween t he two lines by pressing HOLD then the button for the d esired line.
19 During the call, one of you can h ang up and the call can cont inue at the other keypad. Note: If you hear a high-pitched noi se from the ba s e ’s spe aker, the h andset and th e base are to o close t ogether. To talk with two parties using both out - side lines, see “Making a Conference Call.
20 USING REDIAL REDIAL/P lets you quickly dial the last number dia led on either LINE 1 or LINE 2. When you he ar a dial tone, simpl y pr ess REDIAL/P . Notes: • The redial memory is indepen- dent f or each keypad. Y ou can- not r edial a number you di al ed on the handset keypad using REDIAL/P on the base key pad, and vice versa.
21 3. When the service answers , press TON E / . Any additional numbers you dial are sent as tone signa ls. 4. After you com plete the call, return the handset to the base, and press TA L K on the handset or SPEAKER on the bas e. The phone automatical ly resets t o the pul se mode.
22 MEMORY DIALI NG You can store up to 20 numbers in memor y (10 in the handset ’s mem ory and a nothe r 10 in the base ’s memory ), the n dial a store d number by pressing a one-digit memory location number. Notes: • E ach number you store can be up to 16 digits long.
23 5. For each store d number , write the person’s or compan y’ s nam e next to the appropriate location numb er on the supp lied MEM ORY direc- tory sticker . (Use a pencil in ca s e you want t o change the n umber late r .) Att a c h the sticker to the handset.
24 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not expect you to h av e any problem s with y our phone, but if you d o, the fol- lowing sugg estions might help. Proble m Suggesti on Low volume or unusual sounds. Som eone h as picked up anothe r phone on the same l ine. Hang u p the other ph one.
25 If you still have probl ems, disconnec t the phone. If o ther phones on the same li ne work prop erly, the faul t is i n this phone or its in stallation. I f you cannot find the prob- lem, tak e your phone to your lo cal RadioShack store for assistance.

27 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the instr u ctions in “Co n- necting and Cha rging the Battery Pack” on Page 12, the battery pack should last abou t a year. If the ba ttery pack will not hold a charge for more than 2 hours after an overnight c harge, replace it with a new 3.
