3 Important Note: Cordless phon es such as your E T-596 require AC po w- er to operate. When the A C power is off, you cannot di al out or rece ive in- coming calls usin g this phone.
4 READ THIS BEFORE IN ST ALLA TION Each device that you connec t t o the phone line draws pow er from the phone line. We refer to this powe r draw as the device’s Rin ger Equivalence Number, or REN. The REN fo r your ET-596 is locate d on t he bottom of the base.

6 IN ST AL LA TIO N SELECTING A LOCA TION You can place the p hone on a desk top or table, or mount it on a wall. Sel ect a location that is: • near an A C outlet • near a telephone lin e jack •.
7 Placi ng the Base on a Desk T op F oll o w t hes e s t eps wh en yo u pl ac e the base on a desk, shelf, or t able. 1. If you have a single 2-line modul ar jack, plug one end of the sup plied modular cord into the TEL LINE 1/2 jack.
8 5. Plug the other end(s ) of the mod u- lar cord(s) into the modular jack(s ). 6. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. Moun ting t he Ba se on a W all Pla te To make t his connection, you need a 2-line short m odular c ord, such as Cat.
9 2. Plug the supp lied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into t h e DC IN 9V j ack. 3. Route the adapter cord through both the uppe r and l ower grooves and th e modul ar cord(s) through only the upper groove on the bot - tom of the base. Note: If you are us ing two line cords, route both cords through the ap propriate grooves .
10 7. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. Mo unt i ng t h e B as e Direct ly on the W all To mount the base directly on the wall, you n eed two wood s crews (not sup- plied) with heads that fit into the key- hole slots on the bottom of t h e base .
11 3. Plug the supp lied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into t h e DC IN 9V j ack. 4. Route the ada pter and m odular cords through both the upper and lower grooves on the bot tom of the b a se . Note: If you are using two line cords, route both t h r o ugh the appropriate grooves.
12 8. Press and lift out the hands et holder , ro tate it 1 80°, t h en snap it back into place so it holds the handset. 9. Raise the ba se’ s antenna to a v er- tical p osition and fully ext end it. CON NECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY The ET-596 com es with a recharge- able nickel-c admium b attery install ed in the handset.
13 4. T o charge the bat tery , simply place the handset on the base. The CHARGE indicator on the base lights. Recharge the battery when t he BATT LOW indicator f lashes. Notes: • I f the CHA RGE indicator doe s not light when you pla ce the h andset on the base, be sure the battery and AC ada pter are c orr e ctly and securel y co nnect e d.
14 SETTI NG THE D IALING MO DE Set P • • T on the bac k of the base for the type of service you hav e. If you are not sure which t ype you have, once the ba ttery is charged, do this tes t . 1. Set P • • T to T (t one ). 2. Lift t h e handset, press LINE 1 and listen for the dial tone.
15 OPE RA TION MAKING A CALL To make a cal l, lift the hands et. Or, if the ha ndset is away from the base, press TA L K . On t he base, the I N USE indicator lights , and on the handset, the BA TT LOW indicator and a LINE indicator (1 or 2, whi chever l ine was di - aled the last t i me ) light.
16 PUTTING A CAL L ON HOLD Pr ess HOLD to pu t a call on hold so you can temp orarily place the hand set on the base or u se the other phone line without di s conn ect ing t he current cal l. The li ght ov er t he line’s but ton flashes when that call i s on hold.
17 3. Press CONF . The T A LK/BA TT LOW indicator briefly fl a shes and remains stea dily on, and you can talk with bot h parties. To end the conference call, press TA L K or return the han dset to the bas e. If you want to hang up one line and continue talking on the other, press the line button f or the line you wa nt to keep.
18 USING T ONE SERV ICES ON A PULSE LINE Some s pecial services, s u ch as b ank- by-phone, require tone signals. If you have pulse service, you can still u se the se s pecia l ton e s erv ices by f ollo w- ing th ese steps. 1. Be sure P • • T is s et to P .
19 Storin g a Number in Memory Note: If you wait more t han 20 sec- onds be tween each key press, an error tone sounds and the phone exits t he programming mod e. 1. Lift the handset. If you hear a dial ton e , p r e s s TA L K to turn it off. 2. Press MEMO .
20 Dial ing a Me m ory Num ber To dial a number sto red in memory, lift the handset from the base or press TA L K . When you h ear a dia l tone , p res s ME MO and en ter the memor y loc ation nu mber fo r th e number y o u want to dia l.
21 TRO U BLESHOOTI NG We do not expect you to h av e any problem s with y our phone, but if you d o, the fol- lowing sugg estions might help. Proble m Suggesti on Low volume or unusual sounds. Som eone h as picked up anothe r phone on the same l ine. Hang u p the other ph one.
