3 Important Note: Cordless phones such as this one require AC power to operate. When the A C power is off, you cannot dial ou t or receive incoming calls using y our ET-557.
4 READ THI S BEFORE I NST ALLA TI ON Each device that you connect to the phone line draws pow er from the phone line. We refer to this powe r draw as the device’s Rin ger Equivalence Number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of the base. If you are using more than one phone or other device o n the l ine, ad d up all the RENs.

6 IN ST AL LA TION SELECTING A LOCA TION You can place t he phone on a des ktop or table, or mount it on a wall. Selec t a location that is: • near an A C outlet • near a t ele phone lin e jack .
7 4. Route the a dapter ’s cord through the strain relief slot on top of the base. 5. Plug the a dapter into a s tanda rd AC out let. 6. Fully ext end the base’s antenna and place it in a vertical position. Mou nting the Base on a W all Plate 1. Plug one end of the supplie d mod- ular cord into the TEL.
8 7. Align th e ba se’ s keyhole s lots w ith the wall plate studs and slide the base downward to secure it. 8. Press and lift out the hands et holder , rotate it 180 °, t h en snap it back into place so it holds the handset. 9. Fully extend the base’s antenna and place it in a vertical position.
9 6. Route the a dapter ’s cord through the strain relief slot on top of the base and through the groo ve on the bo ttom of t he base. 7. Plug the a dapter into a s tanda rd AC out let. 8. Align the keyhole slo ts with t he mounting sc rews and slide the base downward to secure it.
10 To charge the battery, place the hand- set on the ba se in either of t wo ways: Uprig ht Fac e Do wn The CHARGE indicator lights. Recharge the battery when t he TALK/ BATT LOW indicator flashes.
11 • The supplied bat tery should last for about a year . When the ba ttery loses its abil ity to fully rech arge, order a rep lacem ent ba ttery from your local Radio Shack store ( see “Replacing the B attery”). SETTI NG T HE DIAL ING MO DE Set TONE/PULSE on the back of the base for the type of service you have.
12 USING RINGER ON/O FF To turn off the han dset’s ringer so you will not be disturbed by a telephone call , set RINGER ON/OFF to OFF . Th i s set ti ng also saves battery power. When a call come s in, the ringe r does not sound, but other telephone s co n- nected to th e same line s till ring.
13 OPE RA T ION MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS To make a call, lift the handset and press TA L K . To a nsw er a call, just lift the handset . Or, if the handset is aw ay from the cradl e, simp ly press TA L K . The TALK/B ATT LOW indicator lights. Note: I f you lift the hand set to an swer a call and press TA L K after 2.

17 2. When you hear a dial tone, press the priority dialing button , or pres s MEMO and ent er the speed-dial me mory l oc ati on n u mbe r for the number you want to dial. Ch ain-D ialing S ervice Numbers When c allin g s pec ial se rvi ces (such a s alternate long distance or bank by phone), dial the service’s mai n number first.

22 REPLACING THE BA TTER Y If you follow the instructions in “Install- ing and Chargi ng the Bat tery,” the bat- tery should last about one year. If the battery will not hold a charge for more than 2 hours after an overnight c harge, replace the battery with a new 3.
