5 PREP ARA TION CONNECTING THE BA TTER Y Before you us e your phone for the first time, you m ust connec t the bat tery, then charge it f or about 12-15 hours. Slide off the battery com partment cov- er on the back of the handset . Connec t the battery to t he pins inside the bat - tery compartment.
6 • T he USO C number of the jack to be ins ta lled is RJ1 1W for a w all jack or RJ 1 1C for a baseboa rd jack. Cautio n: You m ust use a 120 VAC/12 VDC adapter that delivers at least 200 millia mps. Its plug must c orr ectly fit the phone’s 12VDC j ack.
7 2. Route the short cord downward through the slot on the base ’s bot- tom and under t he clips as shown. 3. Route the other end of the short cord through the hole in the bracket’s center . 4. Attach the s upplied bracket to the bottom of the ba se by inserting the tabs on th e bracket into the slots on the base, then sliding the bracket up.
8 8. Carefully plac e the handset in t he cradle at the to p of the b ase and make sure it is secure. 9. Move the ba se’s antenna to a ver- ti ca l p os iti on . Note: If you later want to mount the base on a deskt op, press PUSH on the bottom of the b ase and s lide the brack - et down to remove it.
9 6. Plug the m odul ar cord int o a mo d- ular phone line j ack. 7. Align the keyhole slo ts with t he mounting sc rews and slide the base downward to secure it. 8. Carefully plac e the handset in t he cradle at the to p of the b ase and make sure it is secure.
10 • T he f irst time you use your phone after inst alling a new battery , th e handset m ight not wo rk or might sound an error tone when you press TA L K . Thi s m ight also oc cur when you recha rge a battery that has b een completely di scharg ed.
11 SETTI NG T HE RINGER ON/OFF To turn off the ringer, set RINGER ON/ OFF on the handset t o OF F . To turn o n the r in g e r, s et i t t o ON. Note: W ith the handset ’s ringer off, you can still mak e and rec eive calls us - ing the cordless phone .
12 OPE RA T ION Before using you r cordless telepho ne, you mus t connect and charge its bat- tery (see “Conn ecting the B attery” and “Charging the Battery”). For the best operation, m ake sure the base’s a n- tenna is in a vertical p osition.
13 REDUCING INTERFERENCE The ET-5 46 automatically selects the channel with t he best perf ormance and least interference. If you hear interfer- ence between t he hands et and the base during a call, press CHANNEL to switch to the next chann el (25 in all) until y ou receive the best rec eption.
14 USING T ONE SERV ICES ON A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as ba nk by phone, require t one signals. If you have pulse service, you can still u se the se s pec ial ton e s erv ices by follo w - ing th ese steps . 1. Set TONE/PULSE on the bas e to PULSE .
15 MEM OR Y DIA LING You can sto re up to 1 0 ph one num bers for single-button dialing. E ach stored number can be up to 16 digits long. Notes: •I f TONE/ PULSE is set t o PULSE and you want to us e tone di aling for a memo ry number , you must store the tone ent ry along w ith the number .
16 Ent ering a P ause i n a Memor y Number In some teleph one systems , you m ust dial an acces s code (9, for ex ampl e) and wait for a second dial tone b efore you can dial an out side number.
17 TRO UBLESHOOTI NG We do not e xpect you to have a ny proble ms w ith your teleph one, but if you do, t hese suggest ions might help. If you still have probl ems, chec k other phon es on the same line to see if they work properly.

20 REPLACING THE BA TTER Y If you follow the inst ructions in “Cha rg- ing the Battery, ” the supplied ba ttery should last about one year. When the battery loses its ability to fully ch arge, ord er a 3 .6 volt , 300 mi llia mp ba tte ry with a c onnector that fits the connector in the batt e ry compartment.
21 Your p hone might cau se T V or radio interference even when it is operating properly. To det ermine whe ther your phone is c ausing the in terference, turn off your phon e. If the interference go es away, your pho ne is ca using the inter- ference.
