6 PREPARA TION SELECTI NG A LOCATION Select a location for the telephone t hat is: • Near an AC outlet • Near a telephone line jack • Out o f the way of norm al activities • A wa y fr om el ec.
7 CONNECTING THE BATTERY PACK Before you us e your phone for the first time, you mus t connect the ba ttery pack in the h andset and cha rge it for about 15 hours. Slide off the battery com partment cov- er on the b ack of the h andset. Con- nect the battery pa ck’s plug to the pins inside th e compartment.
8 Notes: • Y ou can set POWER to ON while the ba ttery pack charges. • The first time you use y our phone after charging a new b attery pack , the han dset m ight not work and might sound an error tone when you press TA L K . This m ight al so occur whe n you recharge a bat- tery pack t hat has been com- pletely discharged.
9 SETTI NG T HE DIAL ING MO DE Set TONE/PULSE on the back of the base for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which t ype you have, once th e battery is charged , do thi s t es t. 1. Set POWER to ON . 2. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE . 3. Lift the handset, pr ess TA L K and listen for a d ial tone.
10 PHONE OPE RATION Your ET-545’s hand s e t display sho ws telephon e numbers as you dial them or when you recall them from memory . The handset shows t he cu rrent chan- nel number and t he duration of y our call in minutes and seconds.
11 To make or answer a call, press TA L K so the TA L K key on the handset lights. Notes: • If the phone is out of range of the base, the handset beeps three times and the TA L K key turn s of f. • Y ou can m ak e or a nswer a call on a phone on t he sam e line as the cordless ph one, ev en if t he ET - 545’s handset is away f rom the base.
12 USING FLASH/DEL Use FL AS H/ DE L on t he handset to perform the switchhook operation f or spe cial s erv ices , s uc h as C all Wa iti ng. For examp le, if y ou h av e Cal l Wa iting, press FLASH/DEL t o take an incoming call wit hout disconnecting the current call.
13 Note: T he ha ndset will not beep d ur- ing a call. MEMORY DIALI NG You can st ore up to 30 phone num- bers and a ssociated nam es for qu ick and easy dia ling. Each stored numb er can be up to 16 digits long, and each name can be up to 15 charac ters.
14 • T o enter an at symbol (@), press 0 then 3 . • T o enter a spac e, press 1 then 1 again. • T o enter a dash, press 1 then 2 . • T o enter an asteris k, press 1 the n 3 . • T o enter an exclamation mark, press then 3 . 15 Ente rin g a Pa use in a M emory Num ber In some teleph one systems , you m ust dial an acces s code (9, for ex ampl e) and wait for a second dial tone b efore you can dia l an outside number. If your phone is connecte d to one of th ese systems, you might want to en- ter a pause af ter the access code when you store a phone number in me mory .
16 3. Press DIAL . The phone dials the stored number . Note: If you press DIAL 1+ , th e phone dials a 1 at the beginn ing of the phon e number (although it does not app ear on the display). Dele ting a N umber from M emo ry 1. Press MEMORY . 2. Press REVIEW < or > to se ar ch for the stored name and numb er you want to delete.
17 CALLER ID OPER ATION If yo u subscri be to Call er ID, the sys- tem a u to ma t ic all y dis p la ys inf o r mat io n about calls you receive and stores the info rma tio n in C aller ID me mo ry. The system c an store up to 1 00 n umb er only or name and num ber call records.

19 DELETING CAL LER ID RECORDS You can delete individual Caller I D records, or all Caller ID records st ored in t he syst em. Follow these steps t o delete a single record. 1. Repeatedly pre ss REVIEW < or > until the call re cord you want to delete appea rs on the display .

21 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not ex pect you to h ave any proble ms wi th your tele phone, but if you do, the followin g suggestion s might help. If you still have problem s, check other phones on the same line to see if they work properly.
22 The han dset’s range decreases . Ful ly extend the ba se’s ante nna vertically . Return the handset to the ba se t o recha rge the battery pack. Be sure the ba se’s ante nna is not touching a metal surf ace. Receiver sound flutters or fad e s .

24 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the inst ructions in “ Cha rg- ing the Ba ttery Pack ” o n Page 7, the supplied bat tery pack should last for several years. When the bat tery pack lose s it s abili ty to fu lly charge, re plac e the battery pack with a new 3.
