6 PREPARATION CHOOSING A P OWER SOURCE You can power yo ur calculato r from: • F our AA b atteries (not supp lied) • Stand ard AC pow er , using an A C adapter (n ot suppl ied) If you pla n to use the print fun ction fre- quently , we sugg est you use an AC adapter.
7 1. Slide the battery comp ar tment cov er in the directio n of the a rrow and r emov e it. 2. Install the batte r i es as ind icated by the pol arity symbo ls (+ and –) marke d insi de the co mpartment. Cautions: • Use onl y fresh b atteries of th e required size and type .

11 1. Attach the 5. 5 mm outer diam eter/ 2.1 mm i nner diame ter barrel plu g to the adapte r cord, m atching TIP on the pl ug’ s side wi th –NEG o n the cord . 2. Set the adapte r’ s v oltag e s witch to 6V . 3. Insert the adapter’ s barrel plug into the cal culator’ s jack.
12 INSTALLING THE P APER ROLL Note: If the paper rol l does no t fit inside the pape r roll co mpartment , you ca n use the exte rnal roll holder un til the roll is smal l enough to fit in side th e com- part ment ( abo u t on e-inc h di amete r). 1. Press AC to turn on the ca lculator .
13 3. Cut across the paper to f o r m a str aight end . 4. Insert the paper . • Insert the end of the paper in to the slo t i ns ide the c om partment. • T o use the e xternal roll holder , inser t the end of the p aper into the rear slot from the bot tom of the ca lcula tor .
14 5. Press FEED to adv ance the pap er . 6. Inst all the pa per roll. • Place t he pa per roll i nside th e paper rol l compartment. • T o use the e xternal paper rol l holder , raise t he holder a nd sli p the pape r roll onto it.
15 7. R epl ace th e cover , thre ading the paper thro ugh the s lot. Repla ce the pap er roll w hen you s ee a red strip on one edg e of the paper. Use a stan dard 2 1 / 4 -inch paper roll , such as Cat.
16 OPERATIO N T URNING THE EC-303 1 ON/OFF Press AC to turn on the EC-30 31. Press OFF to turn it off. To sav e powe r, the EC- 3031 auto mati- cally turn s off if you do not use it for about 6 minutes . Press AC to turn it back on . Note: All pr evious e ntries are cleared when t he calculat or turns off .
17 PRINTING The EC- 3031 can print and display all calcul ator entries and resu lts, or sim ply displa y entries and resu lts with out print- ing them . You can also print a d ate, a referenc e or code nu mber, and s o on, withou t affecti ng the c alculati ons in prog ress.

PRT disa ppears fr om th e displ ay and the cal culator display s your en tries and results , but does not print them. 19 ROUNDING The RND key dete rmines wh ere the decim al ap pears o n the d isp lay. Ea ch time you pres s RND , the di splay c hang- es fro m F to 5/4 to CUT . Select F t o displ ay a f loati ng dec imal point. Th e calcul ator uses the full 1 0- digit dis pl ay to sh ow yo ur calc ula tio n re- sults .

21 CORRECTING ENTR Y ER RO RS If you enter an in correct val ue, press C once. Th en en ter the corr ect v alu e and proceed with yo ur calcu lation. If you press an inco rrect func tion ke y (+, –, × , ÷ ), simp ly pre ss the c orrect key and con tinue.
22 CORRECTING CALCULATION ERROR S E (error) app ears at the upper left of the displa y when: • A cal cu lat ion res ul t e xce eds 10 dig- its ( this is an ov erflo w error see “Estimat ing Cal culation Results”). • A mem or y ca lcul atio n exceeds 10 digit s (t he memor y conte nt s re ma in unchan ged).
23 3. Add to the right of the n umber as man y zero s as there we re digits to the left of the dec imal poi nt. For e xam ple, th e dis played value E1.01420 6404 is estim ated to equal 10, 142,06 4,040 (one z ero added). 4. Press C to clear the error .
