4 INSTALLING BATTER IES Your Modem Mate requires t wo 9-vol t batteries for pow- er. For the best p erformance, we rec ommen d you use al- kaline batt eries such as R adioShack Cat. No. 23-553 . Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Press the tab and l i ft the battery com partment c over to r em o v e i t.
5 If the B attery Test i ndicator lights dim ly or does not light when y ou press Bat tery Test, replace the b atteries with two fresh ones. Cautions: • Use only fresh 9-volt b atteries.
6 DATA/FAX MO DEM O PERATION Follow these steps to use the Mod em Mate to connect your modem or fax m achi ne to the ph one line. 1. Plug the device’s modular telephon e cord into t h e Modem Mat e’ s MODEM jack. 2. Unplug t he telep hone’s handse t cord from the tele- phone bas e.
7 5. Set VOICE/MODEM to MODEM , so you can set the sen sit ivit y l ev el. 6. Set the Level switch on the back of the M odem Mate to 2 . 7. W it h the phone’s handset still off the hook, give your comput er or fax m achine the comm and to dial the desired p hone num ber .

10 RECORDING CALLS Follow theses steps to con nect the M odem M ate to th e tape recorder and the telephone. 1. Unplug the teleph one’s handset cord from the phone’s base. Then plu g the handset cord into the Modem Mat e’ s HANDSET ja ck. 2. Plug the M odem M ate’s coiled cord i nto the te le- phone’s hands et ja ck.
11 PLAYING CALLS Follow these st eps to play a recording t hrough your tele- phone’s hands et. 1. Unplug t he telephone’s handset cord from the phone’s base. The n plug the handset cord into the Modem Ma te’s HANDSET jack. 2. Plug the Modem Ma te’s coiled cord into the t ele- phone’s handse t jack.
