1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL The RSD-20, Hi gh Speed Digital Shar ing Device, enables up to four high speed m odems, terminals or c ontrollers to shar e a master modem, a mul tiplexer or a computer por t in a multipoint envi ronment. The R SD-20 is compa tible with synchronous equi pment at data rat es of 48, 56, or 64 kbps, with V.

2 INSTALLATION Access inside the equipment is only per mitted to author ized service personnel. 2.1 GENERAL This chapte r provides inf ormation on pe rforming the mechanica l and electrical i nstallation of the RSD- 20.
2.4.2 Rear P anel Six connectors ar e located on the rear panel of the RS D-20, consisting of fi ve channel connectors (four f or the sub-channels and one f or the main channel) and one 3-pin pow er connector, whi ch also includes the fuse holder. Th e five channel connectors ar e 34-pin connectors for the V.

2.5 SYSTEM SYNCHRONIZATION AND CLOCK DISTRIBUTION 2.5.1 RSD-2 0/V.35 Four alternatives are available for synchronization of the system: a) Main channel modem timing signa ls. b) RSD-20 int ernal clock. c) Sub-channel 1 modem timing signal s. d) Any sub-channel modem timing signals.
2.5.1.2 Sync hronization on RS D-20 Inter nal Clock a) RSD-20 baud rat e should be strapped to the requir ed speed. b) DCEs attached to sub- channels should be strapped to external clock. c) DCE attached to main channel should be str apped to external clock.
2.5.1.3 Sync hronization on Sub-channe l 1 a) RSD-20 baud rat e should be strapped to CLK- 1. b) DCE attached to main channe l should be strapped to exter nal clock.
2.5.1.4 Ext ernal Clock for more than one Sub-c hannel This option enables connect ion of more than one sub-chann el to the line from the P.T. T. service. Generally, the P .T.T. modems supply clock to every line – i.e. the P.T.T. has to provide t he clock.
2.5.2.4 Main c hannel is DCE and sub-c hannels are mixed (DTE and DCE) In this mode one of the modem s attached t o the sub-channel s (configured as DTE ) should be attached t o sub-channel 1, and t he RSD baud rate should be st rapped to CLK-1.
3 OPERATION 3.1 GENERAL This chapte r details th e RSD-20 controls and indicators, their function s, and oper ating procedures. The installation procedure s given in Chapter 2 must be complet ed and checked before operation of the RSD-20 is attempte d.

3.4 OPERATIONAL FIELD STRAPPING CHANGES Access inside the equipment is only per mitted to author ized service personnel. If it becomes necessary to reconf igure the RSD- 20 for a different type of operati on, the internal straps must be ch anged to correspond to the new oper ating mode.
4 THEORY OF OPERATION AND APPLICATIONS 4.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter contains a simplified functional d escription of the RS D-20, and cover s the flow of data, contr ols and clocks in all RSD- 20 operating modes. 4.2 CONTENTION RTS/DC D contention in V.
4.4 CONTROL SIGNALS Sub-channel control s ignals are c ombined to p rovide a com posite signal to the main channel. Control s ignals from th e main channel are passed t o all sub-channel s in parallel. The following are det ails of control signals: 4.
4.4.2.2 RS D-20/X. 21 CONTROL/INDICATION If the “ C/I to Sub-channel ” jumper is in t he “ MAIN CHANNEL ” state, the C /I to sub-channel follows the main C/ I (unless the sub-channel is disabled, t hen the C/I is OFF).
