1 Chapter 1 Introduction Overview The CL5708 / CL5716 Sli deaway TM LCD KVMP Switch is an integrated LCD console and keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch that offers secure access to 8 or 16 attached computers and mounts in only 1U of rack space. It features an independently retractable 17” LCD mon itor and keyboard with built-in touchpad.

11 Chapter 2 Hardware Setup Overview For convenience and flexib ility that allows mixing PS/2 and US B interfaces, the CL5708 / CL5716 design utilizes custom KVM cables that serve as intermediaries between the KVM sw itch and the connected computers. A separate custom KVM cable is required for each computer connection.

21 Chapter 3 Basic Operation Opening the Console The CL5708 / CL5716's console is located under the top cover. To access the console, slide the co nsole module out and raise the cover. Note: As a safety precaution, to keep th e console from accidentally s liding out, the console is locked into the In po sition.

Pull the safety catches on the unit's side rails toward you and push the module in unti l it stops. 2. Release the catches; pull the module sli ghtly toward you; then push it all the way in.
Chapter 3. Basic Operation 23 Operating Precautions Right! Rest your hands and arms lightly on the keyboard module as you work. Wro ng ! DO NOT lean your body weight on the keyboard module. DO NOT place heavy objects on the keyboard module. The maximum load bearing capacity of th e keyboard module is 30kg.

CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 28 Port Selection The CL5708 / CL5716 provides three po rt selection methods to access the computers on the installa tion: Manual, an OSD (on- screen display) menu system, and Hotkeys. Manual port switching is discussed below.
Chapter 3. Basic Operation 29 USB Peripheral Devices The front panel USB p ort is available to connect a USB peripheral device (flash drive, CD-ROM driv e, printer, etc.) to the CL5708 / CL5716. Any computer connected to the CL5708 / CL5716 can access the US B peripheral on a one-at- a-time basis.

31 Chapter 4 OSD Operation OSD Overview The OSD (on-screen displa y) is a mo use and keyboard enabled, menu driven method to handle computer cont rol and switching operations. All procedures start from the OSD main screen. OSD Login The OSD incorporates a two level (ad ministrator / u ser) password system.

The user main screen does not show the F4 and F6 functions, since these are reserved for the administrator and can't be accessed by users.

OSD Navigation T o dismiss the menu, and deactivate OSD, click the X at the upper right corner of the OSD window; or press [Esc] . T o log out, click F8 at the top of the main screen, or press [F8] .

For example, you can rapidly switch to any port, scan selected ports, lim it the list you wish to view, designate a port as a quick view po rt, create or edit a port name, or make OSD setting adjustments.
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 35 F2: LIST This function le ts you broaden or narr ow the scope of which ports th e OSD displays on the main screen. The submenu choices and their meanings are given in the table below. Move the highligh t bar to the choice you want, then press [Enter] .
CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 36 F3: SET This function allows the administrator and each user to set up his own working environment. A separate profile for each is stored by the OSD and is activated according to the username that was provided during login.

This functio n allows the administrator to create, modify , or delete port names.

CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 42 F5: SKP Clicking the F5 field or pressing [F5] invokes Skip mode. This function enables you to easily skip backward or forward – sw itching the console focus from the currently active co mputer port to the previous or next available one.
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 43 F6: BRC F6 is an administrator onl y function. Clicking the F6 field, or pressing [F6] , invokes Broadcast (BRC) mode. When thi s function is in effect, commands sent from the console ar e broadcast to to all available computers on the installation.
CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 44 F7: SCAN Clicking the F7 field or pressing [F 7] invokes Auto Scan mode. This fun ction allows you to automatically switch am ong the available computers at regular intervals so that you can monito r their activity without having to tak e the trouble of switching yourself.
45 Chapter 5 Keyboard Port Operation Hotkey Port Control Hotkey port control allows you to provide KVM focus to a particular computer directly from the keyboard.
CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 46 Invoke Hotkey Mode All hotkey operation s begin by invoking Hotkey mode. 1 There are two possible keystroke sequences used to invoke Hotkey mode, tho ugh only on e can be operational at any gi ven time: Number Lock and Minus Keys 1.
Chapter 5. Keyboard Port Operation 47 Select the Active Port Each KVM port is assi gned a port ID (see Port ID Numbering , page 27). You can directly access any computer on the installation with a hotkey combination that specifies the port ID of the KVM port that a comp uter is connected to.
CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 48 Auto Scan Mode Auto Scan automatically switches, at regu lar intervals, among all the KVM ports that have been set as accessible under Scan–Skip Mode , so that their activity can be monitored automatically. See Scan–Skip Mode on pa ge 37 f or more informati on.
Chapter 5. Keyboard Port Operation 49 Skip Mode This feature allows you to switch betw een computers in orde r to monitor them manually. You can dwell on a particu lar port for as long as you like – as opposed to auto-scanning, which autom atically switches after a fixed interval.
CL5708 / CL5716 User Manual 50 Computer Keyboard / Mouse Reset If the keyboard or mouse cease to func tion on the computer connected to the currently selected port, you can perform a keyboard / mouse reset on the computer. This function is essentially the same as unpluggi ng and replugging the keyboard and mouse on the target computer.
Chapter 5. Keyboard Port Operation 51 Quick Hotkey Control The Quick Hotkey (see HOTKEY , page 37) can be toggled bet ween [Num Lock] + [-], and [Ctrl] + [F12]. To toggle the Quick Hotkey : 1. Invoke hotkey mode with the [Num Lock] + [-] or [Ctrl] + [F12] combination.

When Auto Scan mode is in effect, [P] or left-click paus es auto-scanning. When auto-scanning is paused, pressing any key or another left-click resumes auto- scanning.

55 Chapter 6 Keyboard Emulation Mac Keyboard The PC compatible (101/104 key) keyboard can emu late the functions of the Mac keyboard. The emulation mappings are listed in the table below. Note: When using key combinations, press and release the first key (Ctrl), then press and release the activation key .

57 Chapter 7 The Firmware Upgrade Utility Introduction The purpose of the Windows-based firm ware upgrade utility is to provide an automated process for upgrad ing the CL5708 / CL5716 and com patible adapter cable firmware. The program comes as part of a firmware u pgrade package that is specific for each device.
